This is one of the sculptures found at the National Memorial Arboretum which is the UKs main site of remembrance for those who have served the United Kingdom in various ways.
It's a very moving, peaceful and special place sited near Lichfield in South Staffordshire; I was there recently and naturally took some photos!
This sculpture was created by Ian Rank Broadley in it a 'a Serviceman is raised aloft on a stretcher by comrades. On either side family members look on - a mother clasped by a child and an older couple clutching each other in anguish. It bears witness to the cost of armed conflict to those left behind - the families, loved ones and friends who live with the pain and consequence of their loss for the rest of their lives.' (taken from the National Arboretum website)
I took some artistic license with this because I wanted to elevate the spirit of these people to a loftier place beyond the noise of battle and suffering, a quiet and peaceful relief.
Many people of my parents generation (who lost loved ones in times of armed conflict) believed they would one day be re-united with their lost loved ones in a happier, spiritual/heavenly place and they held fast to that perceived 'celestial bond'.
'When will time heal and fulfil the dream of my heart?
When will we unite as one and light our own star?'
'All these memories I will treasure in my heart
Words are so vain
A bond beyond quintessence.'

Star Trails over Mt. Shuksan Range | Press L to view in lightbox (must see large!)
This shot was taken during the same hike we did at Lake Ann, North Cascades. I didn't realize I got a portion of the celestial equator with this shot -- you can see some of the star trails going to the opposite direction. Over to the top left is a faint Perseid meteor.
Exposure: 1870 seconds (single exposure)
Aperture: f/2.8
Focal Length: 24 mm

My first foray into the art of astro-photography.
Me and my partner Paulina drove to the fantastic Pinnacles Desert north of Perth and I was able to plan and capture my first attempts at this kind of work.
It is by no means perfect but I am still pretty proud of it. This is a blend of three exposures - one for the illuminated foreground, one for the shadow area behind and one for the night sky.
I have other plans for the reminder of this year but I intend to explore this kind of photography a bit more next year.

I'm sure others seeing this will think of a much more poetic caption!!
We are all SO happy to be seeing clear skies again after almost 2 weeks' of heavy gray smoke cover from forest fires that I can't stop looking UP!

A self-portrait taken while out at Grotto Pond in Bow Valley Provincial Park with some fellow photographers a couple nights ago, attempting to learn the basics of nighttime photography. I hadn't done any night photography before, so I was concerned about coming home with no keepers. Fortunately, after much trial and error, I managed to get some compositions that I personally enjoy.
I realized how difficult it really is to shoot at night, but I really want to do it more often! It's challenging, but exciting, especially after looking at what your camera managed to capture during a 30s exposure. I was thrilled to see so many new colours and the movement in the clouds that my eyes could not see. Hopefully next time I'll get to see some Northern Lights too :) Thanks for looking

In this captivating image, the vast expanse of the night sky unfolds above a mesmerizing cactus field, creating a striking juxtaposition between the celestial realm and the earthly desert landscape. The scene is set in a remote location, far away from the bright lights of civilization, allowing the stars to shine with unparalleled brilliance.
The overall ambiance of the scene is one of tranquility and awe. The soft, cool hues of the night sky blend harmoniously with the warm earth tones of the cactus field, creating a balanced and captivating palette. The stillness of the desert night is broken only by a gentle breeze, rustling the cactus spines and adding a subtle movement to the scene.
This photograph serves as a reminder of the grandeur and beauty that exists beyond our earthly boundaries. It invites us to contemplate our place in the universe and the sheer magnitude of the cosmos while appreciating the delicate harmony found in the coexistence of the rugged cactus field and the majestic Milky Way.
Oh what a morning I've had! At 4am I was delayed on the road because of a fire, and then chased the sunrise hoping I wouldn't be late to the lake that was an hour away. I arrived, and the lake wasn't a lake at all, but a puddle from the summer sun. Instead of seeing all the mistakes, I tried to see the potential. The lake was warm from being dried up; I didn't have to freeze. The sunrise was unmissable, and the possibilities were endless.

I'd love for you to watch the video I made of my shooting experience this morning, and there are more thoughts and discussion on Promoting Passion as well. Day 2 of 31 was full of beauty, thank you for sharing it with me.

Self-portrait, shot on the Sony A7II and 50mm lens...and a lot of mud.
This is Lake Huron one morning covered in steam. Clouds in the background. I am definitely a dedicated photographer because it was -10 degrees that morning and I had no gloves.
For Macro Mondays theme "Redux 2025", this is actually my first stab at the theme "Spoonful" from just a couple of weeks ago. I really wanted to do something with these neatly-nesting measuring spoons, but was too busy at the time.

Join me for a landscape and post-processing workshop in Iceland, Sept 2014.
The night sky above a mountain in Snæfellsnes, Iceland. We had started driving more and more into the middle of nowhere when we came across this awesome looking mountain. We jumped out of the car, turned off the lights and the amount of 'astro-stuff' you could see was phenomenal!
This clearness in the sky didn't last for long and the stars were soon hard to photography due to light pollution. The upside is that this light pollution was caused by the aurora borealis. BONUS.
