Thomas Darlington demonstrating his hand-made sextant. (This is a montage of two images.) Darlington presented a tutorial on the basics of celestial navigation. He said that with modern instruments (i.e., not the hand-made model), he can sometimes "nail" the latitude as accurately as a GPS, and is reliably within one minute (i.e., one nautical mile), weather conditions permitting.

An original design, the Celestial Chain bracelet is composed of four sizes of rings linked to make this lovely bracelet. The two larger rings (parallel to the wrist) move within the weave and create varying patterns, a little like the symbols for the phases of the moon. 3/8-inch wide; completely sterling silver; closes with a large toggle clasp. Limited edition.

The contours and richly ornamented surfaces of this celestial attendant to the gods exemplify a stylistic shift away from earlier Gupta-influenced forms. Here the linear play of surface decoration and dramatic contours replace the earlier emphasis on seamless volume and subtle balance. The sculptor has twisted the figure into an extraordinary pose that captures the essence of her dance and seems absolutely believable until one imagines actually trying to turn this way. The jewelry sways and emphasizes her movements, both in the way the necklaces and sashes follow the curves of her body and in the upward thrust of the spiked tips of her crown. The crisp carving of her adornments makes a pleasing contrast with the smooth and rounded surfaces of her flesh.

Images of dancing semidivine attendants often appear on the outer walls of Hindu temples. They are placed near the figures of gods to honor the deity, just as actual female dancers honored the gods’ images within the temple.

Spewing molecules, not water, AFGL 3068 creates a beautiful spiral captured by the Hubble telescope's Advanced Camera for Surveys in a 33 minute exposure. About 3300 light years away in our galaxy, the 3 trillion kilometer wide spiral of material, produced by a pair of stars rotating every 800 years, is moving outward at about 9 miles/second. Other spirals in the image are galaxys with billions of stars, but this spiral is carbon dust illuminated by galactic starlight. Look at the full size image for full effect. It's amazing!

Made with StarStaX using around 50 photographies with 15 seconds exposition each.

Humans have been looking to the heavens for guidance since humans could look to the sky. From the ancient Romans, who saw their gods in the night sky, Copernicus, who recognized the true placement of Earth, on up to the crew of Battlestar Galactica, who used the stars and planets to gingerly find their way - humans have always found guidance and comfort in celestial wisdom.
