‘if you could see what i see, you’ll be blinded by the colors. yellow red orange and green and at least a million others’

"If people sat outside and looked at the stars each night, I bet they'd live a lot differently." -Bill Watterson

This is one of my favorite images from a recent trip to Arizona, and really my first attempt at some Milky Way photography. Did a bit of light painting here with my flashlight to bring out the details in the creosote shrubs and saguaro cacti.

Woke up at 2:30 am and drove 45 mins out to a rugged dirt road into the remote Sonoran Desert wilderness to capture this shot of the Milky Way. It was a bit spooky being out there by myself, but it was also so peaceful and humbling to look up and gaze at the billions upon billions of stars that were present in the night sky. Often one's daily stresses start to seem insignificant once you look up towards the stars and try and wrap your head around the vastness and scale of our universe.

Best viewed on black background. Really looking forward to getting this one printed out large!

The data for this Narrowband 10,P mosaic of SH2-115 and Abell 71 was shot at my Home observatory in Valencia and in Sicily by Carmelo.

SH2-115 an emission nebula. It is approximately 7500 light years away. Also featured in this image is the Planetary Nebula Abell 71.

By combining the data from these two very different telescopes the fast refractor telescope and Carmelo’s 16″ home build RC, we were able to benefit from the two very different optical systems.

This image is a stacked composite of 6 individual frames (20 secs, ISO 6400, ƒ/2.8, 14mm) which were captured down at Roches Point located at the east entrance to the Cork Harbour.

RAW files were processed using Adobe Lightroom and then stacked using Starry Landscape Stacker for noise reduction.

please view large | My top 100 | My drops set

The central element in this photo is a single dandelion seed with a water drop sitting in the centre of it.

This one turned out better than I expected. I was shooting with the setting sun directly behind the seed head.

I like how the sun in the lower right, the big drop, and the weird, colorful area of bouncing light in the lower left form a trio of elements in the classic pyramid. Not sure what's happening in the lower left. Almost looks like a visualization of data. Hmmm...that's what a digital photo is after all...

I shot this macro with my Casio EX-F1 through reversed 10x Celestron binoculars. Pretty awkward. Good optics though.

Conditions for this Milky Way Panorama workshop were already good and on this last night at Delicate Arch, we were super fortunate to see Aurora Borealis. But this was just the prelude… the real show got started soon after this sequence was captured. What a thrill that was!

My training partner, Darren White and I have just two more big events to go and we'll wind up our 2017 workshop season. With arcing Milky Way panoramas and Aurora Borealis and a cloud inversion and a big boatload of awesome students, this season was one for the history books! If you weren't part of the incredible experience this year, make sure to stay tuned for the 2018 schedule when it's released on December 1st from NightPhotographyWorkshop.com.

What lies beyond the stars? Step into a new world July 2nd, 2026 ❤

A quick shot of the Orion Nebula (M42), one of my favourite celestial objects and a really satisfying target. I've been waiting a year for an opportunity to image this nebula again, this time with a polar alignment and guiding to enable much longer exposures than the 15 second subs I took last time and with a lower ISO to reduce noise. The next project with this is to either stitch two shots together or, better still, rotate the camera in order to fit both the Orion Nebula and the nearby Running Man Nebula into one frame.

13 x 4 minute exposures at 400 ISO

8 x dark frames

10 x flat frames

21 x bias/offset frames (subtracted from flat frames only)

Total exposure time - 52 minutes

[Wikipedia] The Orion Nebula (also known as Messier 42, M42, or NGC 1976) is a diffuse nebula situated in the Milky Way, being south of Orion's Belt in the constellation of Orion. It is one of the brightest nebulae, and is visible to the naked eye in the night sky. M42 is located at a distance of 1,344 ± 20 light years and is the closest region of massive star formation to Earth. The M42 nebula is estimated to be 24 light years across. It has a mass of about 2000 times the mass of the Sun. Older texts frequently refer to the Orion Nebula as the Great Nebula in Orion or the Great Orion Nebula.

The Orion Nebula is one of the most scrutinized and photographed objects in the night sky, and is among the most intensely studied celestial features. The nebula has revealed much about the process of how stars and planetary systems are formed from collapsing clouds of gas and dust. Astronomers have directly observed protoplanetary disks, brown dwarfs, intense and turbulent motions of the gas, and the photo-ionizing effects of massive nearby stars in the nebula. [Wikipedia]
