The annual Brisbane Festival ignites with Riverfire, heralded by the thunderous flypast of a Globemaster C‑17 and a Super Hornet F‑18, but it’s the fireworks that draw more than half a million spectators to the river’s edge. From Victoria Bridge and South Bank through to the Story Bridge, the Brisbane River becomes a corridor of colour and sound. Our perch on the Kangaroo Point Cliffs — shared with several thousand others — offered a perfect view of the Kangaroo Point Pedestrian Bridge, its lines backlit by the city and crowned with a spectacular cascade of pyrotechnics.
Another photo from the archives that I processed recently. It comes from the sand dunes near town of Cervantes in Western Australia, where we spent an evening shooting the dunes at sunset and dusk.
In moments like this, as one gazes at the stars away from civilisation, it is hard not to think of our existence on this planet and in the universe at large. At the time I was trying to imagine what celestial forces shaped the life and universe as we know it and standing under the starry sky really emphasised to me how small we are in the grand scheme of things.

Sedona's Midgely Bridge and Mitten Ridge under the Milky Way. The landscape portion of this scene was taken during the blue hour, while the night sky was taken approximately two hours later (with the camera remaining on the tripod) and masked in via photoshop.
Found some interesting lichen on a boulder in one of the glacier bays. It reminds me of a scene you would see in space of different galaxies and nebulas ... and that's when I'm sober! Vatnajokull National Park, Iceland, April 2021

Another shot from 2014.
Our first night in Spitzkoppe in Namibia, one of the world's most under-populated countries. The nearest town to our campsite was 60kms away and the level of light pollution was zero. The details on the granite rocks are purely from starlight - it was a completely moonless, cloudless night.
Can't wait to get back!

On a recent Astrphotography shoot down at Ballydowane Cove, I was blessed enough to not only witness and capture the Milkyway itself but also the beginning of the new day's pre-dawn light and as a special added bonus, the moon rising.
This was my last shot of what was an epic time down within the Copper Coast Geo Park in County Waterford, Ireland.
8 individual exposures were captured ( ISO 12,800 | ƒ2.8 | 20 seconds) and were then stacked together using Starry Landscape Stacker and then finally processed within Adobe Lightroom.
During the 21st FAI World Hang Gliding Championship in Brasília, delta wings competed with yellow ipês for attention in the skies.

Star trails in the Pilliga, north-western New South Wales, Australia. Sixty-eight fifteen sec exposures merged in Photoshop. I have not tried to edit out the plane or comet trails. The lighter areas are where there are high densities of stars in the Milky Way and where the Magellanic clouds are located.
The Pilliga is the largest inland forest in Australia. It is quite sparsely populated so star viewing is wonderful. Nearby is the world renowned Siding Spring astronomical observatory.
Taken at Pilliga Pottery, a working farm with a pottery studio and accommodation for tourists.

At the Celestial equator the stars are almost at the same distance from both celestial poles so they seem to travel in a straight line. The South Celestial pole is towards the top left of the photo. The North Celestial pole is below the horizon towards the bottom-right.
This is an image I shot on a spectacular evening just oustide Tromsø, Northern-Norway.

A forecasted CME hit earth, though not as strong as expected, still the lightshow over our heads was just fantastic!!
In the frame you can see my friend Truls standing there on the road, doing the same as me, shooting one of the most insane auroras from this season! Intense colors, fast movement, awesome curtains and an absolutely fantastic corona on top! This was shot just outside the city of Tromsø, Norway.
Curtains, bows, coronas, red auroras, this night had it all. In this shot I aimed from close to the ground using my 15mm Fullframe Fisheye to dig in most possible of the action, using the road and my friend to put things into perspective.
The 15mm on a full frame body captures almost 180degrees, so you can imagine the scale of this one!!

The stars over rural Alabama are pretty amazing when there's no moon in the sky! I was out there doing some fishing this past weekend, and brought along the camera to try out some night shots. These cypress trees line the pathway to a small dock, on a lake that used to be used for catfish farming before being converted to a bass pond (there are some big fish in these ponds!). Learning to take better night shots is something that's been on my list of things to do once I upgraded to the full-frame camera. I'm very, very impressed with the low light performance of the new camera! Unfortunately my lens only stops down to f/4.0, so I'm more or less limited to ISO3200 or above to get an exposure that doesn't result in noticeable star trails. This equipment upgrading is just a never ending process - I guess now I'll just have to find a much faster lens for night photography :) I heard the Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 is a good affordable lens for night shots - does anyone have experience with this, or any other good night photography lens? I appreciate your comments if you do!
