I usually try to get a lofty view of the full moon so I can capture it as soon as it rises above the horizon, but alas it was not aligned. I decide to go for the ground assault at the Wallace Monument and to my amazement it was in perfect alignment 4.2degrees above the horizon at 2.5Km away. The thin veil of high cloud softened the brightness of the moon.

On a moonless night in Mont-Tremblant National Park, the northern sky comes alive as charged particles from the Sun spiral along Earth’s magnetic field. Colliding with oxygen and nitrogen high in the atmosphere, they ignite vivid ribbons of green, purple, and blue above silhouetted treetops — a natural particle accelerator lighting up the polar night.
The aurora dances across the sky, shifting and twisting with a quiet, otherworldly energy. Below, the forest stands in stillness, dark and patient, while above, light flows in currents that seem almost alive, tracing the invisible lines of our planet’s magnetic embrace.
It’s a moment of cosmic choreography, where the vastness of space meets the calm of Earth, reminding us that even in the stillest nights, the universe pulses with motion and color.

The stars over rural Alabama are pretty amazing when there's no moon in the sky! I was out there doing some fishing this past weekend, and brought along the camera to try out some night shots. These cypress trees line the pathway to a small dock, on a lake that used to be used for catfish farming before being converted to a bass pond (there are some big fish in these ponds!). Learning to take better night shots is something that's been on my list of things to do once I upgraded to the full-frame camera. I'm very, very impressed with the low light performance of the new camera! Unfortunately my lens only stops down to f/4.0, so I'm more or less limited to ISO3200 or above to get an exposure that doesn't result in noticeable star trails. This equipment upgrading is just a never ending process - I guess now I'll just have to find a much faster lens for night photography :) I heard the Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 is a good affordable lens for night shots - does anyone have experience with this, or any other good night photography lens? I appreciate your comments if you do!
I passed Holy Name Cathedral on my walk last evening. I took a photograph with my iPhone 11, imported it into my editor, did some processing, and this was the result.
Enjoy!

After several failed attempts at a full moon rise behind Hound Tor it finally worked out. Although the moon was a bit high as it appeared this was due to a huge temperature inversion layer. Fog below and very warm air above bending the light and giving a heat shimmer (superior mirage) to the moon - Very awesome to see! Also there is a 'Where's Wally' moment in there too.

As we were heading home from Carrizo I saw the bright red/pink/ orange flames of a SpaceX rocket launch and told my son to pull over so the four of us could watch. Luckily we were in a wide open agricultural area and the night was crystal clear. It's always fun to go out in the darkness and watch from home too.

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket shortly after launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base, California.
It was carrying another batch of its Starlink internet satellites into orbit. You can see the first stage, nearly center of the photo after it separated, which comes back to Earth for a vertical touchdown about 8.5 minutes after liftoff. That landing occurs on the deck of the drone ship OCISLY "Of Course I Still Love You", which is stationed in the Pacific Ocean. The first stage will then be reused for future launches. Those two smaller bright spots behind the second stage are the fairings.
As I type this - March 28, 2024 - there will be a launch tonight (3/28/2024) which will be the 30th Falcon 9 flight of 2024, and the 20th dedicated to building out the Starlink megaconstellation. To date, SpaceX has lofted 6,077 Starlink satellites, 5,610 of which are currently operational, according to astrophysicist and satellite tracker Jonathan McDowell.
Those already-staggering numbers will continue to grow far into the future. SpaceX has permission to deploy 12,000 Starlink craft in LEO and has applied for approval for another 30,000 on top of that.
