There is one spot on our daily walk that usually hosts three spider webs. If we time it right the sun backlights their handywork for a bit.

Thanks to everyone involved. In particular, Jack Brown, Oliver Turner and the management & staff at the Breedon Works.
I didn't set out to channel the dark side while shooting this series on a guy clearing his driveway with a snow blower. But as is often the case, that's how it turned out. Most of the photos from this session reveal a beautiful blue sky contrasting a plume of brilliant white snow. Then there is this photo, seething with dark energy and distinct from the rest. Some clouds rolled in and created the perfect backlighting...great illumination but without the dazzling brilliance. The high shutter speed froze the moment, chunks of snow in mid air along with fine ice dust settling beneath, creating eerie and delicate patterns out of the utter turmoil. It's almost as if an apparition is ready to form in the curtain of ice. The beauty of the bright winter day is lost in a feeling of darkness, here bordering on malevolence. I noticed this happening in other winter photos back in January, again quite by happenstance rather than intention. Since then I'm constantly on the lookout for these situations though I still don't feel I have much influence on the outcome. I just love the dichotomy of fluffy white snow being projected as a dark entity. I still love the picturesque 'Currier & Ives' look: winter weather idealized as skaters on an ice pond, winter wonderland effect, horse-drawn sleighs transporting blanket-wrapped occupants, etc. But this darker side, a sort of 'snow noir' is very compelling. I'm just not sure why I didn't notice it until now.
I am amazed at how much detail is preserved in casting these. The gills and even the tiny pits in the hood are easy to be seen.
This measure only 5 cms high.
Can you see the float in the sky as the lady casts out?
It took a few attempts due to the speed of casting.
