Half the mould made and the original visible in the modelling clay. I am making a mould of an approximation of an arrow head I made in a flint work class a while back.

Henry Halem believes that suck voids (shrink porosities) are produced gradually from the high end casting soak on down to the high end annealing point. This firing attempted to test that hypothesis by ramping down very slowly (50 degrees F/hr) from the high end soak, 1650F, to 1300F, which is 50 degrees above the softening point for this glass - 1250F. The piece was then crash cooled through the softening point range. The result was inconclusive. This was the largest suck produced by any test. However, my interpretation is that by gradually cooling from the high end soak, any slow build up of tension would have been relieved. I suspect that the crash cool produced this enormous suck. On the other hand, it could be that the slow ramp down gave the glass time to build up a large amount of tension. More tests would have to be done to get a firm answer. (Something I probably won't do).

This will be the central body of what will become Mark Jackson's ultrasonic drill. Mark got the design from NASA. Once completed it should be capable of drilling holes in really hard stuff like gemstones. After tapping both ends Ed used a form tool to smooth the contours of this aluminum casting that Mark poured at his shop.
We've had a busy day today, I'm still struggling with my sinuses but Chap is finally better so we made it to all our normal Monday actvities for the first time in ages! Afterwards I took him to a local farm to see all the animals. He loved the aviary and the guinea pigs :)
At the park this afternoon the sun was casting really long shadows. It was the first time Chap has really noticed shadows and he was fascinated!
