Here tunnel sections -discernible by the pattern of green rebar- are being built inside the basin. Once finished they are to be made watertight, then floated out into the channel, submerged, aligned and attached to one another. I'm not sure why they did this instead of building a temporary coffer dam across the channel and building the tunnel in place but it's certainly more interesting and gives the scuba guys a more important role. It could have to do with a nearby subway tunnel -Boston's Red Line subway goes directly underneath the new highway below the channel floor- which would have precluded the pile-driving usually involved in building a coffer dam, or the role the channel plays in draining the surrounding area.

Aluminium casting: 70mm diameter by 24mm thick; June 1966. This was a test piece to try casting aluminium, using a sacrificial pattern in foundry sand. The pattern was made from two pieces of polystyrene ceiling tile bonded together. The surface finish is as good as I could cut the polystyrene; this was not easy, particularly when trying to cut out the five smaller core holes.
Behind the casting is a largish spindle shell (34cm long), found in 1976 on the beach at Point Samson, on the Indian Ocean coast of Western Australia.
