Angelica Mesiti: The Calling

To conduct research for The Calling, artist Angelica Mesiti has travelled to the village of Kuskoy in Northern Turkey, the island of La Gomera in The Canary Islands and the Island of Evia in Greece where whistling languages are all still in use.
For these communities, whistling languages are in a process of transformation from their traditional use as tools for communication across vast lands into tourist attractions and cultural artefacts and are being taught to local school children.
The Calling is a poignant exploration of ancient human traditions evolving and adapting to the modern world. Mesiti's work speaks to the tenacity and creativity of traditional cultures in the face of technical progress and environmental flux.
This exhibition is the work of Sydney/Paris-based artist Angelica Mesiti, winner of the inaugural Ian Potter Moving Image Commission.

The usual calling position- back end in the swamp, front end propped up on something, and well hidden by vegetation. It was a little rashy pushing through the grass to get in under this guys cover.

Eastern Tiger Swallowtail - Scherman-Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary, 9 Hardscrabble Road, Bernardsville, New Jersey
I found a group of these Tiger Swallowtails drinking from the headwaters of the Passaic River where it runs through the New Jersey Audubon Sanctuary in Bernardsville. The guy in this video was drinking from the time I spotted it, until I moved on about 15 or 20 minutes after I made this video, and the entire time I was there it was drinking and excreting water as fast as it drank it.
In the video you can see that it excreted water once every 10 seconds or so, and I would estimate that it excreted it's body weight in water every 5 - 10 minutes or so. Pretty incredible!
If there are any entomologists out there that know what this guy was doin', please comment and let me know what it was up too!

Calling all humans! My name is Gambit and I am a 2-year-old, male mutt in need of a loving home. I weigh about 45 lbs. I am in search of a lap and human to cuddle. I love to snuggle and give kisses to anyone who will accept them. The volunteers who take care of me at the shelter call me a "melting dog" because I melt into the laps of every human I meet. I just adore people. I am a very laid back boy, but I will play with toys if you throw them. I will have you cracking up while I run zoomies in the yard. I am incredibly sweet with the dogs near me in my kennel. I am a smart boy who learns things quickly, and I walk well on a leash. The volunteers also say that I'm a "jackpot" ... whatever that means.
