"Here is a shot of an enormous cable car trestle that headed up to Portland Heights where Cable Avenue is today, 1890.
- Cable cars appeared in Portland in January of 1890. The first line ran from Irving Street, near Union Station, along 5th to Jefferson Street and along Jefferson past the Vista Bridge into Washington Park (formerly City Park). It had a sideline from 5th and Alder to Front Street and another at Soutwest 18th up to Spring Street. On the Spring Street segment, lay the line’s most impressive element, a trestle spanning one thousand feet.
The Portland Cable Railway Company was incorporated in 1887 to provide public transportation to the area west of the city. The Portland Cable Railway line was modeled on San Francisco cable cars lines, which worked well in that hilly city. Initial investments went to the purchase of real estate, and an intensive sales campaign followed since the only way to make the line profitable was to generate traffic along the route.
The line opened on February 22, 1890 after operators received a brief training from San Francisco workers. The first accident on the line occurred just two days later. When the car gained speed unexpectedly, the freshly trained crew jumped from the car in panic, leaving the three passengers to fend for themselves. Luckily, the passengers escaped with only minor injuries.
Like horse drawn cars, the cable cars could operate in flood conditions, something that the electric cars, that eventually replaced them, could not do. -

Taking an exhilarating Cable Car ride to the top of Gunung Mat Chinchang, 708m above sea level is an unforgettable experience. The 2.2km journey is full of heart-stopping thrills and its splendours are enhanced by the views across to the coast of southern Thailand and the surrounding islands that a clear day affords.
A remarkable piece of engineering, the Langkawi Cable Car was awarded by The Malaysia Book of Records for ‘the Longest Free Span Single Rope Cable Car - total length of 919.5 meters’ and it is one of the steepest gradients in the world at 42 degrees.
Protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the majestic Mat Chinchang Mountain range has been earmarked as one of the sites within the Langkawi Geopark development and it is part of the Mat Chinchang Formation, the oldest rock formation in the country with an age of about 550 million years.
The Cable Car from the Happy Valley to the Great Orme Summit is, at over one mile each way, the longest Aerial Cabin Lift in the United Kingdom. The four seater cars are carried on an endless cable over two miles long and which weighs over 17 tons.
Factory built in around 1912 for local man Harold W. Smith, specialising in cables and cabling for the mining industry. One of only four works in the country that could produce braided electrical cables at the outbreak of the First World War, as a result was awarded contracts from the Ministry of War producing parts for the 'D mk III' field telephone.
The workforce grew from 40 [1912] to 650 as well as works operating on a double shift pattern for the duration of the war. By 1918, 15,000 miles of electrical cable had been produced.
Post war slump resulted in the 'H. W. Smith & Co' works going into administration. Works bought by 'Edison Swan Electric Co' [later 'Associated Electrical Company' and Siemens] to produce power lines cabling.
During the Second World War, the works had [again!] one of the four machines in the country able to produce lead tubes. These tubes were used in the construction of 'PLUTO' 'Pipe-Line Underwater Transportation of Oil' / 'Pipe-Lines Under the Ocean' which were fuel lines between the Isle of Wight and France to support the invasion of Normandy, 'Operation Overlord'.
The cable works closed in 1966 and was bought by a paper & cardboard company 'Reed Paper Group' who manufactured packaging.
The factory closed in the mid-1990s.

The Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, also known as the New Cooper River Bridge, is a cable-stayed bridge over the Cooper River in South Carolina, connecting downtown Charleston to Mount Pleasant. The eight lane bridge satisfied the capacity of U.S. Route 17 when it opened in 2005 to replace two obsolete cantilever truss bridges. The bridge has a main span of 1,546 feet (471 m), the longest among cable-stayed bridges in the Western Hemisphere. It was built using the design-build method and was designed by Parsons Brinckerhoff.
