This was a rarity caused by fate. RailAmerica decided anything with other than an EMD 645 powerplant would be retired. So these 567-powered ex ATSF GP7Us were sidelined, even though in fine operating condition. That is, until the one of the replacing GP38s went over the edge of a drawbridge and the other suffered a catastrophic mechanical failure. And back came the nicely painted Chesapeake & Albemarle power, if only for a bit. Photographed at "Bob's Fishin' Hole" near Moyock, NC in November 2011 accompanied by retired C&A engineer Gary Goodmundson, a really great guy.

Many of these Curtiss C-46 were active in South East and East Asia after 1944 in military and semi civil services.

This specific one came with cn 293 and built in St Louis USA, in service with USAF quite late, in march 1945 as 43-47222.

One year after she left USA to serve in the air force in the Peoples Republic of China to be in service till 1959.

From there she moved to the Japanese Air Force as 91-1143 to be active for more then 20 years.

After wfu in 1978 she moved to the Tokorozowa Aviation Museum , far outside Tokyo.

Here she is kept well behind fences to be caught this summer in heavy rain.

Northwest Territorial was founded by Robert Engle, an American entrepreneur and Yale graduate who became Canada citizen. Engle loved flying and became pilot in 1956. He moved to Yellowknife in 1958 and explored feasibility of starting air carrier in the are in his Cessna 180 float plane. In 1961 Engle founded NWT using single deHavilland Otter which he piloted. The airline operated as passenger and cargo charter from Yellowknife serving mining outposts throughout the Northwest Territories. In 1981, NWT was finally able to secure permit to start scheduled service. First Rankin Inlet, Iqaluit and Winnipeg were served but in 1983 the all important Yellowknife - Edmonton route was established. NWT also operated overnight express service throughout Canada and a trucking company out of Edmonton. The airline was sold to Air Canada in late 1980s but continued to operate as NWT Air with Engle at helm. In 1997 the company was acquired and integrated into First Air.
