The invasion of Nazi Germany in USSR in 1941 that marked the Beginning of World War II for the USSR was disastrous for Soviet Russia and as in World War I for the Imperial Russia, western technical assistance was needed once again. Thus fate gave another chance to the time-tested design of the E-class locomotive, which was ordered by Tsarist Russia during the First World War in America and were built on three American locomotive plants, ALCO, Baldwin and Canadian Locomotive Company under common terms of reference to have 2-10-0 class locomotive. Totally 881 locomotives named El (Ел) were sell to Imperial and Soviet Russia. They worked mostly in Siberian region and on the Far East of Russia.

In April 1943, a plan to purchase steam locomotives and rails from the United States for 1943-44 was approved. It was planned to receive 1000 steam locomotives in 1943 and 2000 in 1944. On the base of El-type was developed more powerfull Ea (Еа Е-american) type locomotive. Various improvements have been made to the base model to increase power and make it more efficient. In early 1944, Alco and Baldwin began production. The very first Baldwin-built steam locomotive Ea-2201 arrived in the port of Murmansk as part of one of the polar convoys (probably JW-58), and in May it was delivered for testing to the Central Research Institute's ring road near Moscow, where it remained until 1955, after which it was transferred to the Far Eastern Railroad, where it operated until 1968. The locomotives were delivered in disassembled form on ships as part of polar convoys to the ports of Murmansk and Severodvinsk, as well as through the Far East and then through the liberated Odessa in the Black Sea. Not all reached their destination. Recently, one steam locomotive was raised from the sunken American ship Thomas Donaldson torpedoed by a German submarine at the entrance to the Kola Bay. Slightly more than 2000 steam locomotives were delivered in 1944-47, purchased under the Lend-Lease program and trade agreements. Due to the outbreak of the Cold War, some of the order remained in the US and their fate is unknown. Perhaps some were given to Chiang Kai-shek in China (type ST-1). 20 locomotives were delivered to Finnish Railways where they were designated Tr2 (VR Tavarajunaveturi raskas - Tr2 informally named «Truman»).

Seybold Building is a historic jewelry building in Miami, Florida. It was designed by Kiehnel and Elliott. The building was erected in two stages. The first three levels of the building were completed in 1921. John Seybold had a bakery and confectionery business which he operated on the main floor. An additional seven stories were added above the annex in 1925. The Seybold Building is a City of Miami historic landmark. Seybold sold the complex in 1941. It is a National Register of Historic Places contributing property as part of the Downtown Miami Historic District.

 

The Seybold building was built back in 1926 as the brainchild of its namesake, John Seybold, who moved to Miami in the late 19th century and eventually set up a bakery. That business burned down, but he bounced back with another bakery. He then went on to run a shopping mall, called an arcade back then, that became the basis of the 10-story Seybold building, which is the second largest diamond and jewelry center in the United States at 166,000 square feet (15,400 m2). The plan to transform the Seybold Building into a jeweler's hub had a helping hand from the Cuban revolution. At the start of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro directed his regime to confiscate businesses all over Cuba causing a mass exodus off the island. This resulted in Cuban goldsmiths starting manufacturing in the US with the Seybold Building being the biggest spot, where individuals continually - seven days a week manufacture from scratch diamond wedding rings. Handmade Cuban Link necklaces, all types of earrings, pendants, bracelets, & cufflink. Numerous Cuban engravers perform artisan stone setting, specializing in engraving, fabrication & wax carving using gold, silver & precious metals. Platinum is the most durable for wedding rings, lost-wax casting using a silversmithing or goldsmithing process in which a liquid material - in this case Platinum is usually poured into a mold, which contains a hollow cavity of the desired shape, and then allowed to solidify. The solidified part is also known as a casting, which is ejected or broken out of the mold to complete the process. Platinum normally has a melting temperature of 1,700 °C (3,090 °F).

 

In the 1960s, the building's first jeweler moved in. Jeffrey Buchwald, a Hungarian immigrant who first opened his jewelry shop on the boardwalk in Atlantic City, moved to Miami to escape the cold. Today, Buchwald Jewelers is a third generation, family-run business, and co-owner Jeff Buchwald recalls visiting his family's store when he was just a kid. "We were the first jewelers in the building — back then there were a few stores and a lot of lawyers", Buchwald said. "By the time I took over 25 years ago, there were a lot more jewelers".

 

Mario's Casting, a second-generation family-run jewelry manufacturing business, immigrating to the United States in 1969 to try and pick up where they had left off. "In the 1970s, a lot of Cubans were coming over and making a home for their jewelry business in downtown Miami", said Martha Camero, one of the owners and operators of Mario's Casting. "As more and more jewelers moved into the Seybold Building, lawyers started moving out. Pretty soon, every single floor was filled with jewelry makers of all kinds.

The majority of the tenants are still jewelry and watch merchants, diamond cutters, repair shops and other specialty gem shops.

The Seybold Jewelry Building was named Best Place to Buy a Diamond Ring by Miami New Times in 2009.

built 1568-71 by Hermann Wulff for the merchant Hermann Kruwel (or Crüwell). Its name comes from the fact that

it was occupied from 1667-1683 by Bürgermeister Hermann Cothmann, who was one of the leaders of the witch hunts in Lemgo. I don't know who the figures represent.

Built in 1893, and expanded in 1914, this Romanesque Revival school was designed by Thomas T. Carkeek. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

 

East Dubuque, just as the name suggests is located to the east of the Mississippi River from Dubuque, Iowa in the northwestern corner of Illinois in Jo Daviess County.

Built in 1924 the congregation now has a place in the suburbs and does not use this old temple often. The congregation is now in a partnership with Case Western Reserve University to turn the temple into the Milton and Tamar Maltz Performing Arts Center.

Built in 1820 and in the mid-19th Century, these two red brick, three-bay, side-gable buildings demonstrate how the scale of structures in St. Charles evolved during the 19th Century as the surrounding region became more established and developed, and as the city became more populated. The older building is one story tall, with six-over-six double-hung windows and a brick rear ell with a shed roof, and the newer building features gable parapets at the side facades, six-over-six double-hung windows in arched bays, a balcony at the central bay of the second floor of the front facade, brick corbeling, and a two-story rear ell next to a two-story gallery-style rear porch. The buildings are contributing structures in the St. Charles Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, and expanded to its present size in 1996.

Built as part of the vast construction program led by King Jayavarman VII, this Buddhist temple looks similar to many temples built at that time. Built to serve Harrogate's first rail station named Brunswick this tunnel was not a necessary feature but was built cut and cover to hide the line away from the affluent residents of Harrogate. It was only in use for around 20 years before being closed around 1862 meaning that the tunnel was out of rail use for about 156 years at the time visited. Later the tunnel was used as an Air Raid Shelter 80 years after it had been abandoned as a rail tunnel. This too was abandoned by 1942 and had been so for 74 years or so at time of visit.

Over 60 buildings are classified on the register of the National Estate in Launceston.

•Walk across City Park to Albert Hall built for the International Exhibition in the high Victorian

style with classical features, and lots of Victorian embellishments. Note the pediment to hide the roof; the classical pilasters- flattened pillars, the rounded windows all with stucco embellishment work, and the many sided dome over the entrance foyer. Ground floor windows are semi rounded; upper floor windows are slightly arched.

•Walk up Cameron Street to see Holy Trinity Anglican Church at no 34. This impressive red brick Gothic revival church was built in 1901 making it a federation period building, although in a different style.

•No 37 is the fine Cornwall Hotel. The rear section was built in 1823. This façade is Art Nouveau built around 1900.

•55 Cameron Street- on the corner with George Street. Admire the former Rydge’s warehouse. Built in the 1880s to take full advantage of the corner a fine three storey building. Note the wonderful carved statue in the niche on the middle floor corner. Windows have Greek Corinthian pilasters and Roman rounded windows. It is an Italianate style building with lots of classical features. There are more statues in niches on other sides too.

•Next at 66 Cameron is the former AMP Society building. What a beauty. Its façade has multi-coloured stone and blue and gold mosaics. Built in the 1880s it has a fine pediment, a slate roof, and the AMP society logo statues in the middle. Note the broken triangular pediment above the front door. The Latin logo reads “amicus certus in re incerta” which roughly translates- a friend in time of need. AMP dropped this logo around 1990.

•At no 68 Cameron is the Post Office. This is a good federation building,was again built in red brick with multi-coloured stone work for effect. It was built in 1889. The tower and clock was added between 1903-06. It is an impressive public building.

•From this corner look right to see the magnificent Town Hall. (If you walk right down St Johns St you will find the Paterson Barracks, 1828 at the end of the street.) The Town Hall is an outstanding classical revival building of stucco over bricks with the façade dominated by impressive Corinthian columns and a fancy pediment with urns across it. The columns create a colonnade or veranda with the symmetrical ends featuring triangular pediments above the entrances. It was built in 1864. If it had been built 20 years later, it would probably have had a dome and other Victorian embellishments. Its rival in town is the old Customs House down on the Esplanade by the River Tamar. We will see this on Saturday.

•Walk through Civic Square to see at no 92 Cameron Street Macquarie House (1829). This simple box like Georgian style structure is a rare example in Launceston for the 1820s. It is impressive with its four storeys. It was built for Henry Reed a local merchant. Supplies were shipped from here across to early Melbourne.

•From Civic Square turn left into Charles Street and left again into Paterson St. At no 36 and 38 are the old Methodist Church (1835) and the gothic Uniting church next door.

•At no 21 Paterson Street is the Permanent Executors Building- a great example of a Victorian neo-classical commercial building. The entablature- embellishments around the windows are striking and fancy with triangular pediments on the upper floor, and rounded arches on the ground floor. It was built in 1887 with almost perfect symmetry with entrance doors at each end so as not to spoil the façade.

• Turn right back up St Johns St. towards the hills with the old ANZ Bank on the corner. This is another fine building built around 1900 as a bank and again taking advantage of the corner with Brisbane Street. It is an Edwardian building of ashlar stone, with classical elements. Note the fine key stone in the voussoirs- curved arches- above the windows. It is distinctive because of the colour of the stone and the baroque style which gives the building great bulk and visibility on the street.

•At no 50-54 St Johns Street is the façade of the Launceston Bank for Savings built in 1878 for the National Bank of Tasmania. The façade has a central arched entrance, Corinthian columns and a first floor balcony. The roof line has an attic window in a triangular pediment above the entrance. It is still a bank.

•No 95 St Johns Street is the former Lyceum theatre. It is a typical classical design Greek style theatre complex. It has Corinthian columns, symmetry and a fancy roof line pediment.

• No 93 is the former City Hotel. Only the façade of this 1870s hotel remains. This is a late example of a Georgian style commercial building with an iron mansard French style roof with a dormer window. The upper floor has strong classical elements too. It is a marriage of several styles.

•At no 126 is the Jewish Synagogue built 1844 and similar to the one in Hobart but not as attractive. It is the second oldest synagogue in Australia and also built in the Egyptian style.

• Next is Queens Park, and by that is St John’s Anglican Church 1825 with additions. The red brick Gothic style additions are 1901-11. Does this marriage of architectural styles work? Bands of yellow sandstone break up the mass of the red brick walls.

•At 116 St Johns St.is the former Anglican manse in Tudor gothic style with gables, barge boards etc.

•Continue up St Johns to see Georgian, villa and terrace houses all classified on National Estate list.

Fearing the French might establish a settlement there, Governor King of NSW in 1804 sent Colonel William Paterson to set up a town at Port Dalrymple in the north of VDL. It is now Georgetown on the coast. It was a difficult site so Paterson moved to the confluence of the South Esk and Tamar Rivers in 1806. Paterson called the place Launceston after the birth town of Governor King. The settlement struggled but in 1813 it was declared a free port to international shipping and the town slowly progressed. Most building in the 1820s was on the wharf where men like Reibey had their own wharves. A large penitentiary was built to provide convicts to build the town but the main early structure is the Paterson Barracks and Commissariat Store in St Johns Street which was erected in 1828. It is an austere, solid stone three storey structure. The other early building is St John’s Anglican Church which opened in 1825. It was a replica of the original St David’s neo-classical church in Hobart. Between 1901-11 the church was incorporated into a new St John’s and only the entrance porch remains visible attached to a Victorian gothic church!

 

The early town relied on flour mills, breweries and the wool trade for its prosperity. Two early settlers, John Batman and John Fawkner established a village across Bass Strait in 1835 called Melbourne. The arrival of the western railway in 1871 boosted the town as did two major mineral discoveries which made Launceston boom. They were the tin deposits at Mount Bischoff in the west in 1871 and gold at Beaconsfield in 1877. The wool industry was still flourishing and Waverley Woollen Mills were established in the 1870s and still operate today. By the 1880s Launceston was prosperous and held an International Exhibition in 1891. The Albert Hall was built at a cost of £14,000 to house the exhibition. Tasmanian producers exhibited as did companies from England, Germany, Austria, France, the USA and New Zealand. The competition with Hobart was strong even in those days and in 1894 Hobart also held an International Exhibition. (Melbourne had had an International Exhibition in 1880/81.)

 

The next factor to develop the city was the availability of cheap hydro electricity from the late 1930s which saw Coats Paton threads and textiles establish in the city ( they closed in 1997 and moved to Wangaratta in Vic.) and the railway workshops for the whole of Tasmania were built at Inveresk just outside the city centre( also now closed.) Launceston also became the first city in Australia lit by hydro-electricity back in 1895 from a generator on the river above Cataract Gorge. Big employers in Launceston today are Boags breweries, Waverley Mills and the education sector- a university campus as well as the Australian Maritime College for training mariners. Greater Launceston has a population of over 100,000 people.

 

Examples of the boom period of Launceston can still be seen in the outstanding late 19th century Customs House, the impressive neo-classical Town Hall, the charming 1891 Queen Victoria Museum (the city venue) and the fine stores and buildings in the CBD. The boom period also saw some grand private houses built along the hill tops of the city.

The Bay View Association of the United Methodist Church was founded in 1875 by a group of Methodists to be a retreat.

 

By 1877, streets, parks, and public areas had been platted and twenty simple cottages had been built. Ten years later there were 125 cottages, a hotel and a chapel.

 

The religious program expanded and grew into a Summer Assembly of eight weeks.An educational program of lectures and music began in 1886, and the community developed around these activities. These programs, along with programs for children and a variety of classes, run from May through October of each year. The community is closed from November through April, during which time the residences must be vacated. Bay View is known for its Victorian style cottages and peaceful scenery.

 

Bay View residents have a great interest in the preservation and restoration of their cottages, most of which are famous for their Victorian "gingerbread" decorations

 

The local camp was listed as a National Historic Landmark district in 1987 as one of the best-preserved examples of the Methodist Camp Meeting movement, as originally built in 1876, and then adapted to the Chautauqua movement in 1885 through 1915.

Built in 1908 and painted Canadian Pacific red & dark brown, this locomotive was issued to the Upper Ferntree Gully to Gembrook line. Over the years, it saw service on the Colac to Crowes and Moe to Walhalla lines, but it saw more service on the Gembrook line than any other. It was withdrawn from service in 1955 at Upper Fern Tree Gully and sold to the Beaumaris City Council where it remained on static display until 1970. After storage at Newport & Ballarat North Workshops, it was brought to Belgrave in 1976 for restoration. It was returned to service in 1982 after a complete rebuild in close to its late 1920s condition with its extended bunker & modified front end including the tapered “stovepipe” smokestack, steel cow-catcher and the all-over Black livery.

Opening of The Albert Bridge

The handsome new bridge which spans the river Torrens near the site of the old Frome, Bridge, and has been named after the late Prince Albert, was formally opened at noon on Wednesday May 7, by the Mayoress (Mrs Buik), in the presence of a large assemblage of leading citizens.

 

The bridge is an iron erection with the exception of the abutments, which are of stone, the lower part from the ground line to the plinth course being from Mr Bundey's quarry at Teatree Gully, while the piers, panels, and coping composing the superstructure are of Sydney freestone. The bridge has a total length of 120 feet between the abutments, and is composed of three spans—that in the centre being 60 feet, and those at the ends 30 feet each. The total width is 42 feet between the handrails, divided into a carriageway of 30 feet and two footpaths of six feet. The bridge has the appearance of an arched structure, but in reality it consists of continuous girders throughout, of which those over the central opening balance the side spans, which act as cantilevers. By this arrangement no weight is thrown upon the abutments, as would have been the case had an ordinary form of construction been adopted.

 

The piers in the river, which bear the whole weight of the bridge, are each formed of three cast-iron cylinders, the outer being 4½ feet diameter decreasing to 3 feet, and the inner 6 feet diameter decreasing to 4½ feet. These are provided at the bottom with a cutting edge, and are carried down to a depth of from 12 to 15 feet below the bed of the river, passing through a strong gravel and resting upon the_ gravel or upon an indurated clay which underlies it. The first cylinder was sunk dry, pumps having been used to keep down the water which flowed in from the gravel through which the cylinder passed. The power required to keep down the water was, however, so great that the contractors determined to sink the cylinders by means of a diver working under water, and the remaining cylinders have been sunk by this method. The diver excavated the gravel round the edge of the cylinders, which were heavily weighted by being loaded at the top with large blocks of cast iron and the bracing links from the old City Bridge, and as the gravel was removed by the diver the cylinder sunk by its own weight. When the cylinders had been sunk to the required depth they were filled up with concrete, and upon this bed stones were laid after the cylinders had been raised to the height of the under side of the girders. The cylinders are provided with ornamental bases and caps.

 

The height of the girders at the springing of the piers is 7¼ feet, and at the abutments 6½ feet, the radius of the curve of the under side of the girders for the side and centre spans being 28 feet and 106½ feet respectively. The girders are of wrought iron, and have a web 3/8 inch thick throughout, the flange-plates being of the same thickness. These are two feet wide and increase in number from a single plate at the ends to three at the piers. There are three girders, which are spaced 15 feet apart, and are securely braced together over the piers: these run the whole length of the bridge, and upon them cross girders are fixed 1¼ feet deep and 6 feet apart: the latter project 6½ feet beyond the girders and form cantilevers for carrying the footpath and parapet.

 

The roadway is carried by 3-inch jarrah planking resting upon joists of the same material, and which are borne by the cross girders. The footway is covered with timber planking two inches thick. The ends of the cross girders support a moulded cornice with corbels, to which are attached the brackets which secure the handrail and the openwork panels under it. Over the caps of the river piers half-columns with fluted sides are carried up, covering the junctions of the springing of the curves of the girders, and giving the spectator just the idea of the extra strength required at these points to support pilasters of iron, which relieve the monotony of the handrail and are ornamented with panels on each side, the one facing the roadway being filled in with the arms of the Corporation of Adelaide. A lamp of graceful design upon each of these pilasters completes the bridge, which is a handsome one, though of massive proportions and, perhaps, a trifle heavy in appearance. The panels and lamps are, however, not yet erected as in consequence of the large amount of minute work upon them they were not ready for shipment with the rest of the ironwork. They are expected to arrive in a few days.

 

The bridge has been erected under the superintendence of Mr Langdon, the City Surveyor, by the contractors, Messrs Davies & Wishart, the contract price being £7,550. There have been some extras, however, which have brought the actual cost of the bridge up to £9,000. The design was chosen by the City Council in an open competition, the successful competitor being Mr John H Grainger, who is to be complimented upon the handsome bridge which is now completed.

 

The opening ceremony was a very simple affair. The bridge was gaily decorated with flags and banners, and a couple of arches of evergreen spanned the roadway. In the centre of the structure a temporary platform had been erected, and here the Mayor and Mayoress, members of the Government, and the City Corporation stood while the bridge was being formally named and declared open for traffic. The Mayor arrived in his carriage immediately after the time given had indicated the hour, and he was soon afterwards followed by a string of vehicles containing most of those who were anxious to see the ceremony. Among these were the Chief Secretary, Hon W Morgan, the Commissioner of Public Works (Hon G C Hawker), the Commissioner of Crown Lands (Hon T Playford), Messrs Townsend, Fowler, and Fraser MP's, Colonel Downes and Major Godwin, Mr R C Patterson, Assistant Engineer: the members of the Corporation: Mr Langdon, the City Surveyor: and several ex-members of the Corporation and other gentlemen interested in the erection of a third bridge between North and South Adelaide. The Mayor announced that his wife had been asked to formally open the bridge. Mrs Buik then stepped forward, and after breaking the bottle of wine in the orthodox fashion, formally named the structure "The Albert Bridge”, and declared it open for traffic.

 

The Mayor then came forward and said that he had been desired by his wife to say on her behalf that she felt highly honoured at being asked to perform the ceremony of opening this beautiful bridge. He believed it was universally admitted that though the bridge was smaller than the City Bridge it was better in many respects, at any rate it was much more beautiful. It was called the "Albert Bridge" after the illustrious husband of our beloved Queen.

 

The cost of the bridge was about £9,000 altogether, the contract price was £8,100, the extra cost being incurred principally through it having been found necessary to deepen the foundations. He felt sure the citizens would admit that the contractors had fairly and properly done their work, and that the bridge would be an ornament to the city as well as a great convenience to the eastern end of the town.
