Better late than never, here are most of the MOCs I built in 2018!

Thanks to everyone who's followed me this year. I appreciate all the feedback I've gotten, and how much this page has grown. There won't be as many builds this year, but I will build some MOCs.

I will be participating in several collab this spring, so I look forward to showing those MOCs.

I will also be attending PKH 2019 and this years major RebelLUG event, Brickworld Chicago 2019!

Thanks

This is a friend's most creative whif design, based on Ju 488 project sketches and the idea to incorporate stock Ju88/188 elements into a 4-engined long range bomber/reconnaissance plane.

For this sleek beauty, three(!) Italeri Ju 188 kits were melded into one. Biggest scratch work include the stretched fuselage (where three Ju 188 bodies were needed in order to achieve a proper length) and the extended wings, which were constructed by two pairs of Ju 188 wings and lots of skill and puzzling. The whole tail was also built from Ju 188 stabilizers, including a tail gun barbette (which unfortunately cannot be seen from this perspective).

Livery is simple, held in standard RLM 70/71/65 with basic (fictional) markings.

An amazing piece - I had to post this to the public!

Built in 1839 by George Okill Stuart.

Founded in 1970, Arcosanti is an arcology designed in the Brutalist style by Paolo Soleri to serve as a self-sufficient community on a desert mesa near Cordes Lakes, Arizona. The buildings that comprise the complex, despite being a work-in-progress, were mostly built between 1971 and 1980, with more sporadic work on a few portions of the complex being completed as recently as 2008. The complex is the result of the design philosophy of Soleri, being an example of his theory of an arcology, combining ecology with architecture, making a dense, self-sufficient community that works with the natural landscape, and an alternative to urban sprawl and more conventional development patterns. Soleri guided the project until his death at the age of 92 in 2013, with further phases of construction being planned. However, Arcosanti has struggled to grow beyond a commune of 150 people, taking on a form and size comparable to a traditional pre-industrial rural village, rather than a town or city with thousands of residents as envisioned by Soleri. Most residents of Arcosanti are like-minded, which is required for the community’s ability to function and operate, and consist primarily of artists, environmentalists, farmers, and sustainability advocates, whom each contribute their skills to the community. In addition to the permanent residents, temporary residents whom spend five weeks attending workshops at the site. Despite its shortcomings, Arcosanti’s relationship to the surrounding environment, radical approach in design, philosophical background, and self-sufficiency are key points that are valuable to consider when designing buildings for sustainability and environmental consciousness, along with being an excellent example of Brutalism, which harmonizes nicely with the surrounding desert landscape.

The buildings at Arcosanti include the boxy, rectilinear Visitor Center, which appears like a medieval tower rising from the edge of the Mesa, with an open pier foundation that provides shelter to visitors entering and exiting the Visitor Trail, the half-domes for the Ceramics Studio and Metallurgy Foundry, various resident apartments, which demonstrate varying exterior characteristics, a barrel vaulted canopy over the central plaza, known as the vaults, a laboratory that houses a greenhouse and woodshed, allowing for food to be grown more efficiently and for items to be crafted by residents, the East Crescent, which contains resident housing and surrounds a central amphitheater. The site also features a swimming pool, gardens, resident cabins, which mostly date to the first stages of construction in the early 1970s, a self-contained wastewater management system, and guest rooms for visitors. The main complex of buildings are arranged at the edge of a mesa, overlooking a canyon, with smaller buildings located further down into the canyon and in the bottomlands along the Agua Fria River.

Arcosanti provides a counterpoint to the modern development pattern, one that is more sensitive and respectful to the landscape and the natural environment, and a design that fosters a strong sense of community, all of which are lacking from most new development being built today. Residents are able to quickly walk to work and to amenities within the community, reducing the dependency on cars and mechanized transportation. Additionally, buildings are designed to be energy efficient, incorporating passive strategies for thermal regulation and lighting. The complex, owned by the Cosanti foundation, remains a work in progress, with only ten percent of the proposed buildings being complete, and cover a very small area of the larger property owned by the foundation, with most of the land being left in its natural state or utilized for agriculture. Tours are available for visitors, along with overnight stays in the guest rooms at the complex, and the complex continues to house and foster a tight-knit, vibrant community.

Sedan.

Ample evidence still exists in Sedan and the district of the early building techniques used. The stone buildings show the work of the masons, while the country buildings show the use of mallee root walls, dry stone fences, thatched barns and even the occasional pine and pug hut. The native pine used was Callistris species which are resistant to termites. We will see one such cottage near Sedan. The last remaining mallee root fence in the district has now gone. The dry stone walls are a feature of the eastern side of the Mt Lofty Ranges as the area was scattered with granite boulders and other rocks. Most of these walls were constructed before the 1870s to divide the great pastoral runs. Generally the walls are one metre high, and almost one metre wide at the base tapering to 40 cms at the top. Some walls were built as recently as the Great Depression of the 1930s, especially along road edges of the Sedan Hill road. The mallee root fences were erected as a cheaper version of fencing wire. Sadly all the mallee root fences are now gone.

Sedan lies in the Hundred of Bagot on the Murray Plains and was so-named by a farmer of Tanunda, Johann Pfeiffer when he purchased 306 acres of land in the vicinity in 1870. It is presumed he named his property sedan to commemorate the German victory over France in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870. At that time he was not able to foresee that other localities in the district would also end up being named after battles. There had been earlier lessees of the land in the area but the leases were forfeited back to the government in August 1860 when the Hundred of Bagot was proclaimed. The land was subsequently surveyed for closer settlement. The rivers of the district were named by the famed SA geologist Menge who called them the North and South Rhine Rivers after the rivers of his homeland in Germany.

The first white men to traverse the district were overlanders with flocks of sheep or cattle from NSW. One of their routes was to cross the Murray near Blanchtown and drive their flocks up the Marne River valley and into the Adelaide Hills. The first lessee of the district was George Melrose who took out a leasehold in 1845. He established his homestead at Rosebank, east of Mt Pleasant. The run was inherited by his third son George Melrose (1860-1938) who was born at Rosebank in 1860. He managed other family properties near Cowell and Hallett. He was an important pastoralist as he introduced to Australia the first Dorset sheep, the first French Percheron horses (the police greys) and Wensleydale sheep. He purchased Booborowie station where he lived from 1897. Sir John Stanley Murray (1884-1971) was born on 27 March 1884 at Rosebank and acquired the property from one of his uncles Sir George Murray, a benefactor of the University of Adelaide. He lived on the property and his managers were responsible for its development as a leading Aberdeen Angus stud. Through marriage the property went from the Murrays to the McLachlans. The three families have prominent headstones in the Mt Pleasant cemetery.

Land sales started in July 1869 and gentlemen speculators as well as genuine farmers bought the land. The latter group mainly came from the North Rhine district around Keyneton and Eden Valley, but also from other areas of the Barossa Valley. Most were of German descent wanting new agricultural lands for their second and third sons. The town itself was surveyed in 1875 and again in 1883 by C. von Bertouch and very soon the town had a flour miller, a baker, blacksmiths and wheelwrights, a builder –stone mason, hotel keeper, butcher, store keeper, saddler and banker. Today Sedan has few of those services. The map for the self guided walk around Sedan uses the 1883 town survey map. A local Truro contractor Mr. Teasdale-Smith constructed the Cambrai-Sedan railway in 1919. The arrival of the first train was cause for great celebration. The line closed in 1964. One of the more unusual local industries was the production of lime. Between 1890 and 1930 lime kilns out of the town burnt crushed limestone and heated it until it flaked into lime powder. Wool Bay on York Peninsula also had lime kilns like those at Sedan. Electricity reached Sedan in 1956; and reticulated water came in 1968.

As noted above many of the early settlers were of German descent and during World War I all German names were changed by law. Rhine Villa became Cambrai, and the North and South Rhine rivers became the Somme and the Marne. All of these names were from WWI battles. During The Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916, the British suffered 57,470 casualties, including 19,240 dead. It was the bloodiest day in the history of the British Army yet despite terrible casualties it was a strategic success in the short term for the Allies against the Germans, as it halted the German advance. The Battle of the Marne, 1914, was a clearer victory for the Allies against the Germans. The Battle of Cambrai in 1917 allowed the British to open up the German lines but not for long. The battle was a stalemate like so many World War One battles. A second Battle of Cambrai in 1918 was a victory for the allies.

Cambrai.

Cambrai township is located in the Hundred of Angas was laid out as a town by Abel Skinner in 1882. Cambrai prospered once the spur rail line was built from Monarto on the Melbourne line to Cambrai in 1886. (The line closed in 1995.) The school here opened in 1888, three years after the free, compulsory and secular education act. Rheinthal cemetery between Cambrai and Sedan serviced both towns. Before the 1917 Nomenclature Act it was called Rhine Villa. Both English and Germans colonists settled the district. Apart from the Lutheran Church, a Congregational church was built and then replaced with a new building in 1926.

Corry, Pennsylvania is a charming little town located in southeastern Erie County.

Built in December 1967, this Santa Fe FP45 (#108, which is its original number) was donated to the Southern California Railway Museum in 1999. It was fully restored between 2012 and 2018, and is now in use for short excursions on museum tracks.

Built in 1780 with some modifactions done now, but still full of character and characters. I love the half door and how the handles keep it shut now.

Built with the LEGO Dimensions' Midway Arcade "Defender" cabinet in mind, this 1980's Classic Space - themed game cabinet is named Astro-Nut and is based on the Adventurers of a certain spaceship loving blue Spaceman and his quest to upgrade his ship and defend it from Alien threats. (The Blacktron mother-ship is the final boss, and the gamer continues in the Space Police series of games.)

I am working on building this in real life from parts at home and will have pictures up of it by tomorrow. The letters "CS" go where the black 1x1 tiles are. This game is going in Benny's Space Ship Shop next to his TV on the apartment level.

Once a front-line fighter, when I photographed this Hawker Hunter back in 1979, they were being used by second-line units such as here with the No.1 Tactical Weapons Unit based at Brawdy.

But a good number have survived into private ownership and this is one such example. But today it looks rather different as it now wears the livery of the Royal Netherlands Air Force as 'N-294' but is still a flyer on the European air show circuit.

"Georgetown is the third oldest city in the U.S. state of South Carolina and the county seat of Georgetown County, in the Lowcountry. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 9,163. Located on Winyah Bay at the confluence of the Black, Great Pee Dee, Waccamaw, and Sampit rivers, Georgetown is the second largest seaport in South Carolina, handling over 960,000 tons of materials a year, while Charleston is the largest.

Beginning in the colonial era, Georgetown was the commercial center of an indigo- and rice-producing area. Rice replaced indigo as the chief commodity crop in the antebellum area. Later the timber industry became important here." - info from Wikipedia.

The fall of 2022 I did my 3rd major cycling tour. I began my adventure in Montreal, Canada and finished in Savannah, GA. This tour took me through the oldest parts of Quebec and the 13 original US states. During this adventure I cycled 7,126 km over the course of 2.5 months and took more than 68,000 photos. As with my previous tours, a major focus was to photograph historic architecture.

Built in 1925, the Theater was transformed into a parking garage in 1976. Part of the theater remains in tack to preserver the integrity of the adjacent building. Interesting enough, the theater was built on the site of the small garage where Henry Ford built his first automobile. The garage was disassembled and moved to the museum in Dearborn, Mich.
