As the political and cultural heart of Poland through the 16th century, Wawel Castle is a potent symbol of national identity.
It's now a museum containing five separate sections: Crown Treasury & Armoury, State Rooms, Royal Private Apartments, Lost Wawel and the Exhibition of Oriental Art.
The Renaissance palace you see today dates from the 16th century. An original, smaller residence was built in the early 11th century by King Bolesław I Chrobry. Kazimierz III Wielki (Casimir III the Great) turned it into a formidable Gothic castle, but when it burned down in 1499, Zygmunt I Stary (Sigismund I the Old; 1506–48) commissioned a new residence. Within 30 years, the current Italian-inspired palace was in place. Despite further extensions and alterations, the three-storey structure, complete with a courtyard arcaded on three sides, has been preserved to this day.
Repeatedly sacked and vandalised by the Swedish and Prussian armies, the castle was occupied in the 19th century by the Austrians, who intended to make Wawel a barracks, while moving the royal tombs elsewhere. They never got that far, but they did turn the royal kitchen and coach house into a military hospital and raze two churches. They also built a new ring of massive brick walls, largely ruining the original Gothic fortifications.
After Kraków was incorporated into reestablished Poland after WWI, restoration work began and continued until the outbreak of WWII. The work was resumed after the war and has been able to recover a good deal of the castle’s earlier external form and interior decoration.

If I see ten people walking down the sidewalk, I'll bet you nine of them will be looking down at their phones. If a crime was committed in front of them, there would be no witnesses. There are no 'hellos' or 'smiles', just to be polite. Nine of the ten had not a clue they were walking under such awesome architectural design. They could care less about what isn't on their phone. There's no eye to eye contact, no casual flirting...you have to join an online dating site to meet someone, even if that person is standing next to you on the subway. Have you ever been bumped into by one of those nine people? It was your fault, wasn't it? Yeah, mine too :-((

Tramway is the primary form of public transport in Kraków. Today, the tram network consists of 90 kilometres (56 mi) of double track. Since the network is designed to be operated by single-ended trams, it has balloon loops at nearly all termini. There are currently 24 balloon loops in Kraków.

This is another shot taken at Open House at the beautiful Atrium of One Finsbury Circus. This one was taken on the Sunday and looks up from the ground floor at the lifts. This is an Office Building which is old and listed on the outside and very modern and futuristic inside. A seriously cool building for photography. It is one of the more difficult buildings to get into. It is open both days but only for the morning with half hourly tours for 20 people so only 120 per day. Last year I missed out arriving too late. This year I made it my first visit and got in on the 11.00 tour.
The picture was taken handheld with a Sony A700 with a Sigma 10-20 mm lens at 10mm. 3 raw images 2EV spacing for HDR. Outputted in Photomatix using Fusion Natural preset for a more natural look. I brought in the 0EV layer using a layer and layer mask to get the most natural look to the sky. More detail was brought in using Topaz Clarity and noise reduced using Topaz DeNoise. I used Hue Saturation yellows to increase the warmth in the lower part. This increased green in some areas of the building so I used a layer mask to remove the adjustment in those areas.

This is a typical Georgian cottage, built with bluestone and sandstone. It was constructed around 1838 by Angus McLeod, bandmaster of the 21st Royal Scots Fusiliers Regiment, who named it in honour of his regiment.

Inside the redeveloped 'Atrium' joining Nottingham Trent University's Newton and Arkright buildings, on Goldsmith Street, Nottingham.
Between 2008-2011 the Grade II listed Newton and Arkwright buildings underwent a £90 million redevelopment, and now the complex represent a mixture of gothic, art-deco, brutalist and modern architecture.
