The Charles A. Goodwin Dam gatehouse in Barkhamsted, CT is part of the West Branch Reservoir System. The Metropolitan District Commission (Hartford, CT) completed the Goodwin Dam in 1960 in a narrow gorge on the West Branch of the Farmington River as a drinking water reservoir. Apparently, no curves were allowed, except for the Commission's medallion!

Occupying a prominent coastal position overlooking the Irish Sea, Dunskey Castle has been the site of a fortification since at least the fourteenth century. Destroyed by Sir Alexander McCulloch in 1489, it was rebuilt in the form of a L-plan tower house and was later substantially extended. The fortification was the home of the Adair family for three hundred years.Dunskey Castle was substantially rebuilt in the early sixteenth century by Ninian Adair who had previously constructed the Castle of St John in Stranraer. The new castle took the form of a three-storey L-plan tower house. A barmkin (curtain wall) ran around the perimeter of the promontory enclosing all the ancillary buildings and included a watch tower.

Last night I had a late online meeting in the backyard, where I noticed the sky light up. As soon as the meeting was over I grabbed my gear and raced to a nearby bridge in Cupertino. The red sky was almost gone by the time I arrived at the bridge. It nevertheless presented itself for an interesting twilight scene.

The Golden Gate Bridge is pretty, no matter from what angle you look at. This is a lesser known view from Fort Baker on the Sausalito side of the bridge.
I processed an enhanced HDR photo from two long exposure RAW images, and desaturated the result.

The temple as seen today was built between 421 and 406 BCE. Its architect may have been Mnesicles, and it derived its name from a shrine dedicated to the legendary Greek hero Erichthonius. The sculptor and mason of the structure was Phidias, who was employed by Pericles to build both the Erechtheum and the Parthenon.

Time again for some "Ir. Wouda gemaal" pictures. This time the steam boiler house. I love the contrast between darkness and light in the building and the industrial look. Lemmer, 2012.

Ter Worm or Terworm Castle (Dutch: Kasteel Terworm) is a castle located in the municipality of Heerlen, Limburg Province, Netherlands. The castle is part of the Terworm estate.
The present building dates largely from the 17th century when the original 15th-century fortified building was converted into a house. It comprises two wings in a T-shaped floor plan surrounded by a moat. The main building is accessible at the front via a marl stone bridge dating from 1843 leading to the main entrance. Between the two wings is a corner tower, which is the oldest part of the castle dating back to the 15th century. Originally round, the tower was converted to an octagonal in the 17th century . The west wing can be dated to 1716, while the south wing has a keystone with the year 1718. The castle garden is a reconstruction based on a French rococo garden laid out by Count Vincent van der Heyden-Belderbusch in 1787 with roses, lavender and boxwood. The garden is a favourite wedding location and admission is free.

The New Synagogue is located on Synagogenplatz, Mainz. The Modernist-styled building was erected in 2010 on the site of the former main synagogue, which was destroyed in 1938. Designed by Manuel Herz, it was nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Prize for European Architecture and the German Facade Prize 2011.

Although their settlements were small and isolated, and they were hard at work converting bush into pasture, the pioneers of the Peninsula bays were quick to build churches, schools and even libraries so that their spiritual, educational and cultural needs could be met. The Okains Bay library, a small wooden building that looks just that little bit grander than the cottages it resembles, was built in 1865. Its recent restoration was supported by the Parkinson Trust.

Trwyn Du Lighthouse, also known as Penmon Lighthouse, is a lighthouse between Black Point near Penmon and Ynys Seiriol, or Puffin Island, at the eastern extremity of Anglesey, marking the passage between the two islands. The first lighthouse was erected in 1838, at a price of £11,589. There had been a call for a light at this location for some years by master shipmen in the nearby city of Liverpool, especially after the steamer the Rothsay Castle ran aground and broke up on nearby Lavan Sands in 1831 with 130 people losing their lives. The present Lighthouse, built 1835-1838, is 29m tall and was designed by James Walker. It was his first sea-washed tower, and a prototype for his more ambitious tower on the Smalls.
