This tiny bird used to be known as American Pipit and is very closely related to the British Rock Pipit. This one was photographed on Long Beach south of Tofino on the west coast of Vancouver Island.

They occasionally turn up in Britain, but are probably overlooked due to their resemblance to other pipits.

D7100 & 18-140 kit lens (testing it out, did pretty good with flare). 2 AB800s bare with snoots L&R one behind subject as rim lighting and one in front as a main light. Paul Buff 51" diffused PLM behind camera as a light fill. Photix Strada trigger and receivers. Adobe Lr, PSCC, Analog Efex Pro 2. Hair is a bit rough with strays that I need to clean up a bit for a cleaner look.

The Buff-banded Rail can be found on Australia's east coast. It is a real skulker, and likes thickly vegetated areas close to water. Unusually, this bird is one of a pair that has taken up residence in the water feature of a village backyard.

This shot was taken at ISO3200, so the detail is a bit soft. But it's better than no shot at all and good enough right now for my 'one of each species' set.

Birders know

this is a great bird. In the US, this bird is found high in the Huachuca Mountains. After a long Jeep ride to the top of Carr Canyon, we found several pairs of these flycatchers.
