Another LBJ. I watched this Thornbill catch the moth and proceed to knock the wings off against the rock. A nice meal!

Buff-tip very welcome and a much needed wander

Another fairly mediocre catch last night here in Stevenage with just 5 moths turning up to the light.

One species was added to the year list, a chunky Buff-tip, such an incredible looking moth that mimics the end of a cut off Birch twig.

In the afternoon I took an hour walk out to the local wooded field margins and managed to notch up 8 species swept from rather damp grass which wasn't ideal and disturbed from low hanging branches.

I targetted a large Copper Beech in the middle of a field and was rewarded with several of Phyllonorycter maestingella and a single messaniella.

An early Crambus lathoniellus was also nice, I reckon it'll produce a few more species this week as the temperature starts to climb.

Tonight looks fairly mild and importantly still, so the trap is out again, we'll see what tomorrow brings.

Garden species count for 2020 now upto 93.

I was quite lucky to see this buff-bellied hummingbird perched on a small limb when I made quick visit to the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge.

15/06/2022: daytime sighting; Hockenhull Platts Nature Reserve, near Chester.

I disturbed this Snout, one of the brightest and freshest examples I’ve seen, from among the reeds and nettles as I walked off-site; fortunately it settled nearby in full view and allowed me to get close enough for a couple of photographs, before an injudicious attempt to ‘garden’ its surroundings exhausted its tolerance.

I was out looking for early Odes yesterday and bumped into a birder who mentioned this bird which I had heard about over a month ago but forgot about it :( Luckily someone had set up a feeder along a walking trail and the bird was still there and I managed a couple okay shots, This is a lifer for me and I will have to see if I can get some better shots before it leaves the area, not a bird normally found this far inland from the gulf from what I have read
