Greetings!

This Christmas cactus is for sale at Mahoney's Nursery, in Winchester. It was about seven feet in the air, but I'm 6'4" and had no trouble getting my camera up there. I was there today to buy some cut flowers, and brought my camera inside to snap some photos while browsing. I should do this more often, as it's a good opportunity for floral photography in the off season.

Black-tailed Deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus)

The black-tailed deer is one of nine subspecies of the mule deer. It was first recorded by the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804-06.

Black-tailed deer live in the temperate coniferous forests along the Pacific coast. These forests are characterized by cool temperatures and lots of rain, but an overall mild climate. Black-tailed deer do not therefore migrate in response to seasonal changes, unlike some of the other mule deer subspecies. Instead, black-tailed deer often spend their entire life in the same general area.

Interesting design.

Browsing some old National Geographic mags of my father I came across all this great camera ads, too good to keep them hidden, although I don't like to post this kind of stuff on my Flickr.

Another Flickr Bucket Test and it is forced upon me without asking. This time it is not as bad as the previous one which resulted in weeks of Flickr being unusable. This time there is this stupid Yahoo toolbar running above the Flickr toolbar. Now, I have paid for a Pro account which means an ad-free browsing experience - or so they promised us. Now they have this awful 1990s style Yahoo toolbar there.

I never use Yahoo for anything except for Flickr. This just sucks and honestly, it just means I will boycott Yahoo at all costs seeing as it is forced upon me.

A woman with tattoos was browsing at a branch of Barnes and Noble bookstore.

During my brief jaunt over to Montana yesterday afternoon, I also encountered a herd of 8 to 10 mule deer that were grazing in one of the nearby fields. There were several does and a couple of bucks, this one being the more stately of the two, curious to see if I posed a threat even from so far away. (1-1-2025)

Shooting in blowing snow, I wanted to keep the soft effect while still making an attempt to mitigate movement by the deer, especially at such a distance, thus the slower shutter speed. It was a tradeoff either way but reasonably acceptable. I am seriously contemplating investing in the 150-600mm glass and possibly parting ways with this 100-400mm so as to obtain the extra reach without using any teleconverters. The versatility of the zoom is why I hesitate to obtain the 300mm f4 prime, even though I would probably be more apt to using one of the teleconverters with it, since it is faster than the variable f5-6.5 of the aforementioned zooms. The additional 200mm reach would fill frames far more nicely... Decisions, decisions... There is still a lot of work I need to achieve with my 100-400mm first. :)

I shot the trees and clouds, thanks to Eirian stock browse.deviantart.com/?qh=&section=&global=1&...) on Deviant Art for the model shot. Missing on the picture are the swarms of mosquitoes who had a feast on this photographer ...!

------------------------📜LITTLE STORY📜

👥Lady in black👥: - God, leave that dirty cat alone, we don't want you to catch something from him.

=

😽Girl with cat😽: - But mum, he's so nice and warm, listen to him purr! Can we take him with us? Pleaaaaaaase!

=

👥Lady in black👥: - We're about to get on a train, where are you going to take him? Don't we have enough animals in the house?

=

🎩Gentleman with a newspaper🎩: - You've got horses and dogs, you don't need a cat. You won't look after him anyway and it's all on the servants' shoulders.

=

😽The girl with the cat😽: - I didn't ask for horses and dogs, you got them to go hunting. You never listen to my wishes! You wicked people! Aunt Elf, you love animals, you probably have a lot of them in your home country. Tell them we should get this cat.

=

🙋Snow Elf🙋: - This cat really has a liking for you, as he is lying so calmly in your arms. But sometimes the best place for animals is out in the wild. Just think of his domestic habits of sharpening his claws on various surfaces and marking his territory. Milady, you don't have a u personal home yet and you're not in a position to take responsibility for someone else's life. Perhaps you should let this animal run free.

=

👥Lady in black👥: - You see, even the Elves speak in facts. As long as we keep you we can't take another freeloader around our necks, let alone have a problem with him. I just recently updated all our furniture in the house.

=

😽The girl with the cat😽: - What kind of hearts do you have? You measure everything in material things, but what about the joy he can bring? I've heard that cats are great healers of many diseases..... well, maaaaaaaah!

=

🎩Gentleman with a newspaper🎩: - In our world, the feeling of joy cannot turn into material food. There's a train coming, let him go now and let's go!

=

😽Girl with a cat😽: - Well daddy, you'll will love him, I promise! And I'll clean up after him myself, honestly - honestly!

=

👥Lady in black👥: - So, did you hear what dad said? Be a good girl and don't be a nag!

*😽The girl with the cat😽 hugged the cat one last time, and looking at his retreating sleepy figure, sadly headed for the train with other family.*

He isn't much of a fan for modern art, but I am :] I caught him looking right before he got bored. I need to teach this silly boy of mine to appreciate new things!

Explored January 15, 2025

An oldie from 2018, showing the Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW), and taken with my then-still new Lumix LX100. It's one of those images I have done something processing-wise on and off, now and then, whenever I stumbled upon it while browsing my older images in LR. So I spontaneously decided to finish the processing today and upload it so I won't forget about the image again for another year.

With this particular POV, directly from the front, I found black and white oddly satisfying although the blue hour colours are lost. But why 16:9? The Lumix LX100 has this convenient little switch on the lens for quickly changing between formats (4:3, 3:2, 1:1), and this function is too inviting, not to use it occasionally.

Back then, I hadn't yet learned how to use the Lumix properly, so I was basically only pressing the shutter button after composing an image. Functions like bracketing and such I learned much later when I was more confident with the camera's controls and menu. And so, from a technical point of view, there are many flaws here like the blown highlights and other things I'd do differently today.

The pond's surface hadn't been completely still because the resident ducks kept landing on it, doing their evening routine, and splashing around. There also was some fluffy stuff from the trees on the water, and LE didn't make either look nicer.

The light/aperture stars along the pond are from the lens. The fixed Summilux lens renders beautiful stars, so I'm happy I got that right. But the lights on the HKW's roof were rendered as light blobs, so Luminar's "Magic Light" came to the rescue again ;)

Happy Week, dear Flickr friends!

It's Ramadan here in Malaysia. It's the second week of fasting before Hari Raya. To my muslim Flickr friends, Selamat Berpuasa. Everyone else, have a lovely week ahead.

This is a close up of a hibiscus that is in my garden. And the only one in bloom on the tree. I hope it lasts the whole week since it is truly a beautiful flower.

11.11.2010 - just happened to browse through EXPLORED. And found this at #421. LOL. So funny.

Browsing the reduced rails and trying on a selection of dresses will banish your worries and bring happiness. This was specially true for me in this dress. As I stepped out of my little room to check this dress in the big mirror at the end of the corridor, another woman said "That's beautiful!" Women are not ashamed to do these things for each other.

Have you ever been looking for one thing – at home or while browsing the web for example – and accidentally stumbled upon something else, but that is just as interesting? Something similar happened to the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope a couple of years ago. While observing distant galaxies lying billions of light-years away, the telescope serendipitously spotted several asteroids, small Solar System objects that reside ‘only’ a few tens to hundreds of millions of kilometres from Earth.

Asteroids are mainly found in an area called the ‘main belt’, between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. More than 700 000 asteroids have been identified to date, and predictions indicate that many more might be out there, each left over from the early days when planets were taking shape around the Sun.

The curved or S-shaped streaks in this image are trails created by asteroids as they move along their orbits. Rather than leaving one long trail, the asteroids appear in multiple Hubble exposures that have been combined into one image. The image shows a total of twenty asteroid trails, belonging to seven unique objects; five of these were new discoveries – too faint to be seen previously.

This week, a team of astronomers, planetary scientists and software engineers based at ESA and other research institutes has launched a new citizen science project: the Hubble Asteroid Hunter. The project was developed as part of the Zooniverse – the world’s largest and most popular platform for people-powered research.

The new project features a collection of archival Hubble images where calculations indicate that an asteroid might have been crossing the field of view at the time of the observation. Everyone can participate! By identifying the asteroids potentially present in these images and marking the exact position of their trails, you too can help the team improve the asteroid orbit determination and better characterise these objects. Precise knowledge of the orbit is particularly important for so-called near-Earth asteroids, those potentially flying close to our planet.

This image was taken as part of the Frontier Fields program, a Hubble initiative to push the telescope’s limits, observing six massive galaxy clusters – huge cosmic objects comprising hundreds of galaxies along with hot gas and dark matter – and exploiting their effect as a gravitational ‘lens’ on background sources to capture light from extremely distant galaxies.

While observing each cluster with one of the cameras on Hubble, the team also used a different camera, pointing in a slightly different direction, to photograph six so-called ‘parallel fields’. This maximised Hubble’s observational efficiency in doing deep space exposures, imaging a myriad of far away galaxies.

This picture, first published in 2017, shows the parallel field for the galaxy cluster Abell 370. It was assembled from images taken in visible and infrared light and contains thousands of galaxies, including massive yellowish ellipticals and majestic blue spirals. Much smaller, fragmentary blue galaxies are sprinkled throughout the field. The reddest objects are most likely the farthest galaxies, whose light has been stretched into the red part of the spectrum by the expansion of space.

The position of this field on the sky is near the ecliptic, the plane of our Solar System. This is the region in which most asteroids orbit the Sun, which is why Hubble astronomers saw so many crossings. Hubble deep-sky observations taken along a line-of-sight near the plane of our Solar System commonly record asteroid trails.

I'm having trouble uploading this morning -- another hiccup from Flickr. Trying again.

Here, a zookeeper named Sarah offers some maple leaves from a nearby tree to Code, the common eland (taurotragus oryx). Keepers like to build trust with the animals.

My deer gardeners specialize in topiary! They are willing & eager to work in my spring garden for free! :)

Make the best of it. I had a relaxing couple of hours at the beach yesterday morning. Amazing how many friends you can attract with a bag of Fritos! ;)

I've been enjoying browsing through my contacts' photos. Sorry there is so little time for commenting.

Grove Arcade Building - Asheville, NC

The Arcade Building was constructed between 1926 and 1929. It was designed by architect Charles N. Parker in the Tudor Gothic Revival style. Built by E.W. Grove, it has since remained one of Asheville's architectural marvels.

It served as a commercial shopping center until World War II, after which it housed government agencies including the National Climatic Data Center. It was reopened as a public market in 2002.

This photograph shows the Grove Arcade Building just after it's completion. It is from the E.M. Ball Collection. Link is to the University Archives of the Ramsey Library at the University of North Carolina at Asheville.

Browsing the archives

I realized yesterday that I had been posting here for 5 years since 2015. Since that time so much has changed - I started out not sure of myself, not sure what I was doing or why I was doing it. I had no idea how to do makeup or pick out clothes - I was so scared that I would be called out, browsing at the store or buying makeup (and I did once !!). So much has changed in this time to now spending the majority of my time as a female. Thanks for all your likes, lovely comments, and messages throughout the years. Even though I dont usually respond I want you to know they are greatly appreciated. Here's to more adventures, fun, sexiness, and beauty in all forms for the next five years to come.

Xoxoxoxo Marie!

Aren’t you glad these two are munching in our back forty rather than yours? So cute and tiny compared with the moose we grew used to admiring in Alaska.

Not the best angle, but they do have all eight hooves ;)

I left this fairly large in case anyone wants to see midges flying (or flies) and the leaf the buck seems to hide. The doe just continues browsing, as they do.

Cropped about fifty percent. Far away.
