Sunrise at Mesa Arch, every photographer dream... We all have in mind this amazing picture of the sun rising over the La Sal mountains, hitting the bottom of the arch, creating an amazing scenery.

I was determined to get one of those, but you know what? Nature flipped me off. Lots of clouds and no sun. Kind of a bummer when you've traveled thousand of miles and when you know this is probably the only attempt you'll have in you life to take this shot.

Anyway, the landscape was amazing so I enjoyed my breakfast here and tried to make the most of the weather situation ! This picture might not be as impressive as the "usual" views of Mesa Arch but I liked the glow and the clouds/sunbeams were very interesting.

Even without the sun, it was an amazing moment.

Let me know what you think of this picture ! I will be glad to read your comments ! Feel free to browse though my gallery as well !

Having been confronted head on by the dominant male this stag deferred and led the herd of young male and female deer up the hill. In his own time the dominant male left the clearing where they had been browsing and grazing to bring up the rear. With an occasioonal backward glance they were soon all out of sight.

Thank you all for your kind responses.

The reticulated giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata), also known as the Somali giraffe, is a subspecies of giraffe native to Somalia, southern Ethiopia, and northern Kenya. Reticulated giraffes can interbreed with other giraffe subspecies in captivity or if they come into contact with populations of other subspecies in the wild.

The reticulated giraffe is among the most well-known of the nine giraffe subspecies. Together with the Rothschild giraffe, it is by far the giraffe most commonly seen in zoos. Its coat consists of large, polygonal, liver-colored spots outlined by a network of bright-white lines. The blocks may sometimes appear deep red and may also cover the legs.

The extraordinary height of the Reticulated Giraffe allows them to browse on branches of trees that other hoofed animals cannot reach. This has helped make the Reticulated Giraffe one of the most successful animals of the African savannah. The Reticulated Giraffe feeds mainly on Acacia and Combretum trees, however, it will eat as many as 100 different plants depending on which are available at the time.

The Reticulated Giraffe gets a large amount of water from the dew on the leaves and from the water in the leaves. When it encounters a watering hole, it will drink up to 12 gallons at one time. – Wikipedia

"The Grévy's Zebra (Equus grevyi), also known as the imperial zebra, is the largest and most threatened of the three species of Zebra, the other two being the plains Zebra and the mountain Zebra...Named after Jules Grévy, the Grévy's zebra is found in Kenya and Ethiopia...Compared with other Zebras, it is tall, has large ears, and its stripes are narrower..."

"The Grévy's Zebra lives in semi-arid grasslands where it feeds on grasses, legumes, and browse; it can survive up to five days without water...It differs from the other zebra species in that it does not live in harems and has few long-lasting social bonds... Male territoriality and mother–foal relationships form the basis of the social system of the Grévy's Zebra...This Zebra is considered to be endangered...Its population has declined from 15,000 to 3,000 since the 1970s. However, as of 2008, the population is stable..."

The common duiker (Sylvicapra grimmia), also known as the gray duiker or bush duiker, is a small antelope and the only member of the genus Sylvicapra.

This species is found everywhere in Africa south of the Sahara, excluding the Horn of Africa and the rainforests of the central and western parts of the continent. Generally, they are found in habitats with sufficient vegetation cover to allow them to hide—savannah and hilly areas, including the fringes of human settlements.

Colouration of this species varies widely over its vast geographic range. There are 14 subspecies described, ranging from chestnut in forested areas of Angola to grizzled gray in northern savannas and light brown shades in arid regions.

It grows to about 50 cm (20 in) in height and generally weighs 12 to 25 kg (26 to 55 lb); females are generally larger and heavier than the males. Only the male has horns and these can grow to 11 cm (4.3 in) long.

The common duiker has a wide diet; beyond browsing for leaves, flowers, fruits and tubers, they will also eat insects, frogs, small birds and mammals, and even carrion. As long as they have vegetation to eat (from which they get some water), they can go without drinking for very long periods.

They are active both day and night, but become more nocturnal near human settlements, presumably due to the presence of feral dogs and humans.

Males are territorial and smear gland secretions on rocks and branches to mark their territories; their preferred resting places are generally on elevated ground, where they can observe their territory. Females, by contrast, prefer deeper cover. The overall success of this species stems from its ability to inhabit a wide variety of habitats, as well as from its adaptable, generalist diet. – Wikipedia

Giraffes favor eating the leaves and twigs of Acacia trees. This tree is armed with big, white, sharp thorns to protect its juicy leaves from attackers. Giraffes, however, are not deterred by these thorns and they use their long maneuverable tongues and tough lips to get around them.

Drama over the Frankfort Light

This is one of those images I have always thought had potential, but I could never seem to get the post processing to give me the right look. I took this photo back in September 2013 shortly after getting my first micro four thirds camera, the Olympus OM-D E-M5. Back in 2013, I was just getting started with processing RAW files using Lightroom. I come back to it on occasion, trying do to a better job with the highlights and shadows, but was never satisfied with my results. Today, I came back to this photo as I was browsing through my catalog and decided to give it a try in Luminar. While I could probably spend more time with it, I do think that I was able to get something that works and reflects the type of drama in the skies that I have always been trying to capture.

Browsing through my pictures I suddenly see this landscape, and think it could be a norwegian fjord, until I see the pines. No it is Canada, but you may call it a Norwegian bias!

From 11 june till the 25th of July 2015, I traveled in Canada. Starting in Brighton Ontario, where my sister lives at the border of an amazing part of lake Ontario, I flew to Vancouver, and Vancouver island where I took the boat at Port Hardy to take part 1 of the Inside passage, to Prince Rupert in BC. Two days later I took part 2 to Skagway in Alaska. When coming from Skagway Alaska, you can take the train to Carcross. it is a very scenic train ride that halts at Bennet lake.

And then to Whitehorse and further on by car to Kluane National park in the Yukon district. Whitehorse is situated at the border of the Yukon. Frow there I flew back to Vancouver, rented a car, and traveled three weeks in the BC- and Alberta Rockies, visiting the famous, and less famous Nature parks like Banff and Jasper. Last few days back to Brighton Ontario to enjoy lake Ontario once more, before going home. A picture of my itinerary can be found on Facebook (www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10152940536581759&set...).

4000 pictures later, it is quite a task to show the right stuff, although the stunning scenery guarantees at least a few great shots to share. Objective will be to make a book (for myself mainly), and that might take a while.

I hope you will enjoy the impression of my travel, one that equals earlier journeys to Alaska and south America, this journey was the first in the digital era, and equally intensive because of all the hiking activities every day on and on. I loved every minute of it.

The springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis) is a medium-sized antelope found mainly in southern and southwestern Africa. The sole member of the genus Antidorcas.

Active mainly at dawn and dusk, springbok form harems (mixed-sex herds). In earlier times, springbok of the Kalahari desert and Karoo migrated in large numbers across the countryside, a practice known as trekbokken.

A feature unique to the springbok is pronking, in which the springbok performs multiple leaps into the air, up to 2 m (6.6 ft) above the ground, in a stiff-legged posture, with the back bowed and the white flap lifted.

Primarily a browser, the springbok feeds on shrubs and succulents; this antelope can live without drinking water for years, meeting its requirements through eating succulent vegetation. Breeding takes place year-round, and peaks in the rainy season, when forage is most abundant.

Springbok inhabit the dry areas of south and southwestern Africa. The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources classifies the springbok as a least concern species. – Wikipedia
