The two forms of black-tailed deer that occupy coastal woodlands in the Pacific Northwest of North America are subspecies of the mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus). They have sometimes been treated as a species, but virtually all recent authorities maintain they are subspecies. The Columbian black-tailed deer is found in western North America, from Northern California into the Pacific Northwest of the United States and coastal British Columbia in Canada. The Sitka deer is found coastally in British Columbia, southeast Alaska, and southcentral Alaska (as far as Kodiak Island).

These two subspecies thrive on the edge of the forest, as the dark forest lacks the underbrush and grasslands the deer prefer as food, and completely open areas lack the hiding spots and cover they prefer for harsh weather. One of the plants that black-tailed deer browse is western poison oak, despite its irritant content. This deer often is most active at dawn and dusk, and is frequently involved in collisions with automobiles. (Wikipedia)

This is the Columbian sub-species. Based on maps of sightings in iNaturalist, the Sitka sub-species is not found on Vancouver Island.

There were three deer roaming the parking lot at our hotel. They then just ambled across the road to the flower beds on the other side, totally oblivious to the traffic. Thankfully, no collisions ensured.

Just after coming into the park there is a visitor center. A trail leads off of the visitor center, and on the beginning of the trail there were three female mule deer browsing on trees. They were very close, but hidden off to the side. They seem to have become habituated to people visiting the park. In all my time in the parks I visited, I never saw a male mule deer.

The mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) is a deer indigenous to western North America; it is named for its ears, which are large like those of the mule. There are believed to be several subspecies including the black-tailed deer.

Unlike the related white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), mule deer are generally more associated with the land west of the Missouri River, and more specifically with the Rocky Mountain region of North America. - Wikipedia

Have been browsing through a few images from a trip to Far North Queensland a while ago. Funny how I invariably dismiss all my images on first viewing but given a little time manage to find a few I can live with :)

I didn't realize it was world book day 02/03/23 so I hastily browsed through my Asha pictures of her in costume and picked 3 to upload to mark this occasion. I changed the background to a plain black as I didn't have the time to do anything else more creative...lol. Happy World Book day from Asha, Ashala and myself...

This photo was taken in 2010, five years ago, hard to believe.

About this album: I adore surfing old photos. Each of them tells a good story, a great experience. That's why I like photography. It records the outstanding memories and makes them unforgettable. I can recommend photography, this thankful passion to everybody.

Yearling white-tailed deer bucks are often called button bucks because they have little bumps, or buttons, on their heads. If you zoom in on this guy, you can see a slight swelling on each side of his head, situated right in front of his ears and topped with some orange hairs. Starting next spring, small antlers will start to grow out there. This hungry youngster was busy browsing on some of the tasty twigs and leaves on those nearby bushes. This woody browse is one of the favorite foods for white-tailed deer in the fall.

The South African giraffe or Cape giraffe (Giraffa giraffa or Giraffa camelopardalis giraffa) is a species or subspecies of giraffe found in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. It has rounded or blotched spots, some with star-like extensions on a light tan background, running down to the hooves.

In 2016, the population was estimated at 31,500 individuals in the wild. - Wikipedia

Black rhinos are browsers that get most of their sustenance from eating trees and bushes. They use their lips to pluck leaves and fruit from the branches. Currently there are 5,055 black rhinos left.

Except for females and their offspring, black rhinos are solitary. Females reproduce only every two and a half to five years. Their single calf does not live on its own until it is about three years old.

Black rhinos feed at night and during the gloaming hours of dawn and dusk. Under the hot African sun, they take cover by lying in the shade. Rhinos are also wallowers. They often find a suitable water hole and roll in its mud, coating their skin with a natural bug repellent and sun block. Rhinos have sharp hearing and a keen sense of smell.

Black rhinos boast two horns, the foremost more prominent than the other. Rhino horns grow as much as three inches (eight centimeters) a year and have been known to grow up to five feet (one and a half meters) long. Females use their horns to protect their young, while males use them to battle attackers.

The black rhino once roamed most of sub-Saharan Africa, but today is on the verge of extinction due to poaching fueled by commercial demand.

The black rhinoceros is classified as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List and is listed on Appendix I of CITES. For conservancies, national and private reserves that hold any rhino, the key to ensuring the survival of their populations is the provision of adequate security. – Wikipedia

The matriarch on the left is giving all the signs that we in our jeep are close enough to her daughter and babe. She let out a loud trumpet and stepped towards us and I shifted into reverse and headed out of there. Then appeared a whole family as they continued their peaceful browsing. That would be 50 to 200 kilos per day (at least!).

One of my hobbies (besides photography) is cooking and I love finding and trying new recipes.

The advantage of no fences. Two young Black-tailed deer dropped by after sunset to browse the red-twig dogwood and other delicacies. The black-tailed deer lives along the Pacific coast, and is smaller than a mule deer, but is related to a Sitka deer, according to Wikipedia.

Giraffes favor eating the leaves and twigs of Acacia trees. This tree is armed with big, white, sharp thorns to protect its juicy leaves from attackers. Giraffes, however, are not deterred by these thorns and they use their long maneuverable tongues and tough lips to get around them.

A doe and her fawn browse the spring hillside for edibles. Fortunately for them, anything they put in their mouth is edible in this lush environment. This image captures a moment of retail browsing. A woman, likely an adult, is standing outside a shop, intently looking at the window display. The shop appears to specialize in toys and novelties, as evidenced by the numerous stuffed animals and other items visible inside. The shop's branding is playful and eye-catching, with the name 'LABUBU' repeated in a vibrant, cartoonish font. The woman's attire – a long, flowing dress – contrasts with the playful nature of the shop's aesthetic.

The springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis) is a medium-sized antelope found mainly in southern and southwestern Africa. The sole member of the genus Antidorcas.

Active mainly at dawn and dusk, springbok form harems (mixed-sex herds). In earlier times, springbok of the Kalahari desert and Karoo migrated in large numbers across the countryside, a practice known as trekbokken.

A feature unique to the springbok is pronking, in which the springbok performs multiple leaps into the air, up to 2 m (6.6 ft) above the ground, in a stiff-legged posture, with the back bowed and the white flap lifted.

Primarily a browser, the springbok feeds on shrubs and succulents; this antelope can live without drinking water for years, meeting its requirements through eating succulent vegetation. Breeding takes place year-round, and peaks in the rainy season, when forage is most abundant.

Springbok inhabit the dry areas of south and southwestern Africa. The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources classifies the springbok as a least concern species. – Wikipedia
