An evening walk is made all the better by an encounter with this handsome Roebuck just as the sun was about to go down...☺️

Found this lil one feeding on the grasses that surrounded a small pond in the interior of Alaska. The cow moose was feeding on the vegitation under the water about 20 yards away from the calf. Watching the calf, it was evident that it was afraid of the water. It would walk forward towards its mother only to stop and retreat back to the grasses. Moose often times will be found feeding in ponds on the vegitation that grows below the surface. It gives the moose a break from the constant harrassment from mosquitoes. Often times, the back legs of a moose will be bloody from all of the mosquitoe and fly bites that it receives. Moose have baffles in their noses so when they go underwater to feed, they do not inhale water through their noses.

Elk are one member of the deer family that both graze (eat grasses) and browse (eat leaves).

The bulls (or more properly, stags) are quite docile in the summer and are either loners or hang out with other bulls in small groups. In the fall, during the rut, the bulls are unpredictable and dangerous and should not be approached.

The reticulated giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata), also known as the Somali giraffe, is a subspecies of giraffe native to Somalia, southern Ethiopia, and northern Kenya. Reticulated giraffes can interbreed with other giraffe subspecies in captivity or if they come into contact with populations of other subspecies in the wild.

Together with the Rothschild giraffe, it is by far the giraffe most commonly seen in zoos. Its coat consists of large, polygonal, liver-colored spots outlined by a network of bright-white lines. The blocks may sometimes appear deep red and may also cover the legs.

The extraordinary height of the Reticulated Giraffe allows them to browse on branches of trees that other hoofed animals cannot reach. This has helped make the Reticulated Giraffe one of the most successful animals of the African savannah.

The Reticulated Giraffe feeds mainly on Acacia and Combretum trees, however, it will eat as many as 100 different plants depending on which are available at the time.

The Reticulated Giraffe gets a large amount of water from the dew on the leaves and from the water in the leaves. When it encounters a watering hole, it will drink up to 12 gallons at one time. – Wikipedia

Black-tailed Buck (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus )

“The black-tailed deer is one of nine subspecies of the mule deer. It was first recorded by the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804-06.

Black-tailed deer live in the temperate coniferous forests along the Pacific coast. These forests are characterized by cool temperatures and lots of rain, but an overall mild climate. Black-tailed deer do not therefore migrate in response to seasonal changes, unlike some of the other mule deer subspecies. Instead, black-tailed deer often spend their entire life in the same general area.

Black-tailed deer can be distinguished from mule deer by their larger tail, the back of which is completely covered with black or dark brown hairs. Mule deer have smaller tails in which only the tip is covered with black hairs. Black-tailed deer are generally smaller than mule deer.

Range: Central California to British Columbia

Habitat: Mixed habitat with forest cover

Status: Mostly common and widespread in suitable habitats

Diet: New plant growth in spring, woody browse at other times; acorns favored when available” Source : www.nhm.org/site/explore-exhibits/permanent-exhibits/nort...

Brown Acres – Jackson County – Oregon - USA

After placing bird feeders in our back yard we've had several new species of birds arrive. Among them are American Goldfinch's. I've seen one (maybe two) in the past 23 years we've lived here but this year many have descended upon our abode. This male seems choosy in his food selection.

Since I can't travel because of the current pandemic I might as well take advantage of the opportunities that're right under my nose.

Brooklyn Public Library has a "Browse The Branches" campaign that encourages everyone to visit the 62 branch libraries. You are given a booklet and then visit a branch to collect a sticker. There are prizes awarded as you collect a certain number of stickers. It's a great way to visit Brooklyn neighborhoods as well as the libraries. I collected the first stickers as I had things to do nearby. Now I'm mapping out plans around the branches themselves, of course I do find other things as I make my way by bus and subway. I'm a little over a third of the way through. All I can say is more to come!

Stop right now before you do anything and DON'T give me too much credit, LOL! These were inspired completely by my new Flickr obsession, CeRae. I was browsing through her stream, which I stumbled across by accident, and found this, www.flickr.com/photos/cookiesincolor/4251217611/ which I thought had to be the CUTEST cookie ever. However, I did not bookmark it so when I got an order for pizza cookies, I was scrambling to find this masterpiece!

Mine are not as well designed as the original, because I went the lazy way and did crust for icing, but I am still pretty tickeled with them. The only weird this is, it seems they should taste like pizza, not a cookie, LOL!

Anyway, a HUGE thank you to CeRae for giveing me permission to use her wonderful design!

Another photograph from early June: Common Merganser (female) with chick (Mergus merganser).

The little ones are juveniles by now and, as far as I can tell, all have survived. I had the opportunity to witness the mother protecting her chicks very fiercely against anything that came close, even orphaned, disoriented and certainly inoffensive Mallard ducklings.

Now lets just assume for a moment I did the identical journey opposite to the way I would usually, would they still be so different? -- Jasontheaker

I enjoy browsing quite a number of contact's streams here on Flickr. I love seeing other work, it opens doors for me, allows me to see the world in new ways. I daresay I learn more about photography in the time I spend looking at other photographer's finds than I do in the time I spend with my own cameras in hand. I am just that way.

So it was with this shot. Some of the photography I like looking at the most are photos of places I am familiar with, the more so the better. This bridge for example. You might think that since I spend so much time there that I might get tired of looking at photos of it after a while. Quite the opposite actually. I am fascinated when others photograph this bridge and their views of it. When you know someplace as well as I know this bridge, you learn a tremendous amount being able to compare your vision of it against another's.

There were two photos in particular that inspired this one. One by Manyfires and the other by Gigapic.

Ok, so to tie that in now with a commentary I recently read on Jasontheaker's stream. We easily fall into patterns. We develop familiar paths to negotiate the waking hours between morning and night. And not just in the physical sense in terms of the routes we walk or drive, but mentally too. We develop a familiar train of thought, a familiar way of looking at the world and perceiving it. I guess we have to, it is just the way our brains interpret what we see and reference it. But these familiar ways can also be a cloak that hinders our perceptions as well.

Without getting too much into that philosophical argument, let us just apply that idea to photography. We get into a comfortable perception when it comes to our photography as well. And in a certain sense, there is nothing wrong with this. Do what you know and do it well. But what about what you don't know and might be able to do well?

That is one of the reasons this bridge is so valuable to me. It is my control group. It is the place I can go to that I know so well, yet continue to learn so much about. Where I can experiment and learn. Where I can study the perceptions of my local peers and learn even more, not just about this bridge in particular but about sight, which we do with our eyes, and seeing, which we do with our minds and imaginations.

I have been shooting this bridge off and on (more on than off I think) for about six years now. And before one dusky blue evening about a week ago, I had never realized this shot was there. Until a couple of photos here on Flickr, and some choice commentary on a friend's stream helped me at least momentarily step off of the familiar path and to see this bridge in a new fashion.

This shot was taken with a borrowed Hasselblad SWC and a 20 minute exposure on Portra 160VC.
