The Central Otago wine region is the world's southern-most commercial wine growing region. Central Otago's best-known wines are its Pinot noirs, but many white wine varieties are also popular. The Central Otago Wine Region is the formal geographic indication for wines grown in Central Otago.

At around 300 metres (980 ft) elevation, Central Otago's vineyards are protected from New Zealand's characteristic maritime climate by high mountains up to 3,700 metres (12,100 ft) . They thus have the only true continental climate zone in the country, with large daily and seasonal temperature extremes. Rainfall averages around 375-600mm: summer is hot and relatively dry, and often accompanied by the Nor'wester foehn wind; autumn is short, cool and sunny; and winter is cold, with substantial falls of snow. Heavy frosts are common throughout winter and, indeed, frost can occur at any time between March and November. One of Central Otago's warmest wine growing areas can be found just north of the Lowburn Inlet area.

I am continuing my browse through my photo archives and I have noticed a theme that regularly emerges at some stage in my cross-dressing sessions. Part of me is thrilled by that and part of me is embarrassed and part of me questions the motivation behind it. If my narratives irritate then I suggest stop reading now as I have another scenario I am musing over and intrigued by.

In this photo I am clearly trying to be sexy and alluring and attractive to men. I am an heterosexual male so why am I doing this?

Since my early cross-dressing days, I started to cross-dress at the age of 41 nearly fifteen years ago, I have seen a very definite theme in that I have dressed in certain clothing and posed in a way that can only be described as sexual. In my early days there was a period when I was dressing in a way that looking back now resembles ones expectations of how a prostitute may appear. I also recall I was highly aroused by my cross-dressing back then and had some very intense pleasurable moments. I see no point in denying any of this as the reality is I did it, it happened.

I have noticed on browsing through transvestite pictures that I am far from alone in having at some point dressed in the provocative sexual style of a prostitute. I fact I cannot help but note that such pictures are very popular receiving high viewing numbers on transvestite photo pages. It seems a lot of cross-dressers are captivated by others cross-dressing in such a way.

I won’t deny that I find it rather exciting to dress in a sexy style and enjoyed the erotic nature of doing so and posing for a photo. I can acknowledge now I did want men to be attracted to me and excited by my female appearance. I loved the idea I may be able to do this.

This brings me back to one of my recurring themes in my narratives regarding sexuality. On the face of it dressing up like a prostitute and posing in a picture and hopefully stirring excitement in men is surely the act of an homosexual man? I say no, it is I believe the act of an heterosexual man.

My view is that what lies behind transvestites going for this look and provocative posing is our own male sexual fantasies. Most transvestites deny any kind of sexual arousal is involved in their cross-dressing. At some stage in one’s years of cross-dressing I feel fairly certain there was a definite sexual element and masturbation involved. This can cause dismay and guilt and self loathing after it has occurred, I definitely experienced such feelings. However, as one evolves with their transvestism and grows older it is easier to be more accepting of oneself and start to enjoy the experience with the sexual aspect and some of the earlier style choices diminishing.

I do feel that our male fantasies about the ideal woman affects our approach to how we cross-dress. We may be men dressing up as women but for the majority of us we are most definitely heterosexual men; as is fairly accepted now most transvestites are not homosexual. That is not a definitive statement as there can be other factors behind ones desire to dress and look female. In my case I am an heterosexual male but I do have a definite transsexual aspect to me but not strong enough to dominate. I will admit I enjoy the dressing up and the illusion and the knowledge I am really a man. The transsexual side I feel puts in me in the ball park so to speak of why I desire to spend time as a woman now and again.

I think cross-dressing has a lot of the male fantasy about women involved in it. We often wear outfits and make style choices real women would not choose themselves, We frequently dress to suit our inner fantasies rather than real world female appearances. Let me be clear I am not condemning this, I will admit I like to indulge in my fantasies now and again despite knowing I am being unrealistic, it’s fun and yes, can be pleasurable.

I conducted an experiment with some female friends and showed them a few pictures that were hugely popular with transvestites, often with comments such as ‘totally convincing’, you get the idea. Interestingly they found them anything but convincing. The pictures they preferred were ones that indeed looked more realistic and real world but it was noted were not being viewed much. It seems that utterly convincing, passing one hundred percent in the outside world as a woman in a totally realistic way is not what most of us aspire to even if we think we do. Only a minority pursue this and do well . The majority go in for overtly feminine, more towards glamorous looks and often with a high degree of sexual fantasy such as mini skirts, very high heels, heavy make-up, long hair styles, long painted nails, posing in lingerie, adopting provocative expressions and poses. I see this all the time and I have even done this myself quite a lot over the years. Still don’t believe it’s motivated by sexual fantasy? I rather think it is, I rather do.

I fully expect this post to be unpopular and draw a high degree of negative responses but I like to talk openly about my transvestism when I can so please bear in mind this is my own view I do not expect agreement. I do feel though we can be less than honest with ourselves about why we engage in cross-dressing and I think the whole taboo around the sexual aspects, which many deny vehemently, does exist for a lot of cross-dressers and it would be a lot easier for many to accept if they admitted this and enjoyed it instead of the angst that can be felt.

What I’m saying is dressing up in sexy way and looking like a prostitute does seem to be a stage many of us go through and may well retain. Don’t feel bad about it just get on with it and enjoy it. It may be a stage that passes or always be something one goes in for. Whatever, don’t feel too bad about it, don’t question your sexuality, it is I believe an heterosexual act and one can derive a lot of pleasure from it. Have fun, have a lot of fun!

Taming Light #17.

Deep in the depths these strange creatures of light feed on radiant filaments of green.

Well, that's what I can see. Perhaps you see something else? :)

For new viewers: These are light refraction patterns or 'caustics' formed by a light beam passing through a shaped and textured plastic form. Colour is added into the clear plastic which modifies the way the plastic hardens further enhancing the patterns. The pattern is captured directly on to 35mm film by removing the camera lens and putting the transparent object in its place. The processed film is digitally scanned for uploading. Please note these are not computer generated images but a true analogue of the way light is refracted by the objects I create.

CR510 Pennsylvania Truss Bridge

Marquette County

Background:

www.historicbridges.org/bridges/browser/?bridgebrowser=tr...

This is one of the largest, most beautiful, and most significant truss spans in Michigan. Not only does this truss bridge display the Pennsylvania truss configuration, it appears that it may have actually come from the state of Pennsylvania. In 1919, the Michigan State Highway Department purchased the bridge which originally crossed the Allegheny River. Relocating and reusing truss bridges was not unusual in this period of history. An example notice indicating bridges for sale from 1921 is shown to the right. At this time, CR-510 was a state trunk line route and purchasing and relocating this bridge would have been an inexpensive alternative to building a new bridge from scratch. It was erected on the CR-510 location in 1921. The Michigan State Highway Department's Biennial Report stated that the bridge was one of two toll bridges crossing the Allegheny River within 500 feet of each other and was being removed due to the redundancy. Unfortunately, the report did not state exactly where on the river this bridge came from. Since most of the Allegheny River is in Pennsylvania, it is assumed the bridge came from Pennsylvania, although the Allegheny River does dip into New York State for a short time. Depending on where on the Allegheny River it was originally located, it may have been part of a multi-span bridge.

Pennsylvania truss bridges are an uncommon truss type, and the nature of their design means that they are reserved for longer truss spans. However, even among pin-connected highway Pennsylvania truss spans, this bridge's span still stands out as fairly long. It is the longest pin-connected highway truss span in Michigan. The truss type is extremely rare in Michigan, and so the bridge has additional significance in the context of Michigan. The bridge also retains excellent historic integrity with minimal alterations despite its long service and being located in two different states over its service life. The bridge has decorative details on its portal bracing, another feature that is rare among Michigan truss bridges.

In 2010, this bridge was replaced by a new high level bridge on new alignment a short distance west of the historic bridge. Fortunately, Marquette County did not demolish the historic bridge. Instead, the bridge was left standing for its historic value and remains open to pedestrians. The county even did substantial work to create a walkway that approaches the bridge on a more even grade. No work was done on the historic bridge, however the bridge is not in severe condition. At the same time it is worth noting that the paint system is failing and rust and section loss have been developing in the typical trouble spots like the bottom chord. However, now that the bridge is away from vehicular traffic and corrosive deicing salts the rate of deterioration should greatly slow. A long term goal worth considering would be to plan for a project to repair and repaint the bridge. However, in the meantime, the bridge is safe from both demolition and deterioration from vehicular traffic.

It should be worth noting that other states like Pennsylvania have refused to leave historic bridges standing when they are replaced by a bridge on new alignment. One of the reasons cited is liability. Firstly, these concerns about liability are unfounded since no proof has ever existed that a substantial number of historic bridge related lawsuits have ever occurred. Furthermore, Marquette County has demonstrated how easy it is to reduce or eliminate liability. Signs are posted at the walkway leading to the bridge that read "MCRC Property Enter At Own Risk." While these signs do not prohibit people from visiting and enjoying the bridge, they also indicate that MCRC is not responsible for any injury occurring at the bridge site.

So this kind of screamed "come purchase me"....took a detour while traveling for work. MACY'S UP AHEAD......they really need to stop that (they actually don't . I knew Macy's was there)...walked on and browsed. Luckily for me....nature called and while I vacated the Last Chance racks headed for the rest rooms I glanced at this pretty sweater. I am a sucker for sweaters..this being just a cotton and oversized sweater, I really could not take my eyes off of it. Kind of a Flash Dance bare shoulder style which I still aodre.

I should not be allowed to browse on Rightmove.com, or Globrix, or Gumtree or Redtube.

When animals are caged they develop pacing behaviours. When I am caged in an office, tethered to a desk I develop browsing behavior on the internet for the ideal flat.

I should be blocked from all letting agents’ websites.

I am a heinous, time wasting browser.

I see a flat that I can immediately imagine myself living in; I picture myself slobbing around in dusky pink cashmere pyjamas, trailed by a kindle of kittens. I imagine where exactly I would install my fantasy piece of furniture – a pole dancing pole, flanked by antique Venetian mirrors. I imagine bringing my dream man to this perfect dwelling, plying him with wine, before slowly undressing him and laying kittens nose to tail along his naked body and, like a plate spinner on Paul Daniel’s Magic show trying to keep them all purring simultaneously.

All these thoughts flash through my mind as I stare at a blurred, and badly lit photograph of half a doorway, a 50 quid Ikea wardrobe made of corrugated cardboard and a 3 bar electric fire all at a jaunty angle.

In those 30 seconds of pondering my whole future happiness has become dependent on me living in that flat. Suddenly my life cannot go on until I have arranged a viewing.

I ring up.

I book a viewing.

In the thirty seconds it has taken to do this I have changed my mind.

Suddenly I imagine all of the wine I will no longer be able to afford. The bars I will not be able to go to in order to meet the man who I will spread with kittens. The silk ties I won’t be able to hoard, the amount of cashmere pyjamas I will probably need to be wearing as I won’t be able to afford to put the heating on.

I go to bed as two people, on my left side in a cold sweat that I won’t get to live in that flat, on my right side a cold sweat that I will. I have read the same page of The Shining ten times whilst thinking about sofas and it is the bit where Danny is saying RED RUM a lot – and instead of revelling in the horror I am thinking about evenings spent spinning round a pole to Shakira whilst glugging on cocktails.

This week my perfect property was a live/work studio in a huge industrial warehouse. I spent two hours leading up to the viewing imagining the eclectic, battered furniture, huge unpainted canvases, bare pipes, the dappled light through the gaffer taped windows, the deep-thinking, long eyelash’d artists who I would run into on the rusty iron staircase who are pondering just how much they love kittens and women in gasmasks as they toy with a tiramisu.

As I got to the viewing there were two other couples circling the agent predatorily. We eyed each other suspiciously and growled. We had clearly each been having our very separate, personal fantasises about this apartment, had imagined all of the ways our lives would change once we start flushing the toilet of this place rather than the one we currently flush. It’s like getting a new mobile phone and feeling as if a whole new set of people must surely come as a package with the phone that will text

and phone you and invite you to a whole new world of ring tones and buttons configurations.

I look around the various warehouses and I am starry eyed in wonder and love as if Jeremy Clarkson has just walked up to me and handed me six bunches of supercar keys and said, “Here, have my life, I don’t want it anymore.”

It is as I am leaving the industrial yard that reality hits and I realise that I probably wouldn’t even make it up the three flights of external stairs on my first night without being mugged. And what would I do if I even made it home to this vast empty space? I couldn’t then afford wine or food or friends or clothes.

If I met Jeremy Clarkson he too would probably be a massive waste of money with no heating, a funny damp smell and would threaten to kick my back door in all night.

So every agent who I email should get a warning at the end saying, ‘this applicant is a flippertigibbet, a fantasist’ give her a night to toss and turn over this, there will be no viewing, no kittens.

But it is jolly nice to receive those chummy emails updating you on new properties. It’s as if a very thoughtful friend is writing to you, trying to better you, move you forward in life. It certainly makes a change from reading emails from the health and safety department demanding that I take the temperature of all the toilet bowls in the office and put up signs asking employees not to trim their pubic hair over the sink in the kitchen.
