I was browsing in my local Barnes & Noble bookstore today, looking for words, when I came across this book, The Dictionary of Lost Words. It's a novel about a young girl whose father was one of the people who were selecting words for the first complete Oxford English Dictionary. She begins collecting the words that were discarded, hence Lost Words.
I haven't read the book yet, but the person standing behind me in line to pay, gave it very high marks.

Black-tailed Deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus)
"The black-tailed deer is one of nine subspecies of the mule deer. It was first recorded by the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804-06.
Black-tailed deer live in the temperate coniferous forests along the Pacific coast. These forests are characterized by cool temperatures and lots of rain, but an overall mild climate. Black-tailed deer do not therefore migrate in response to seasonal changes, unlike some of the other mule deer subspecies. Instead, black-tailed deer often spend their entire life in the same general area.
Black-tailed deer can be distinguished from mule deer by their larger tail, the back of which is completely covered with black or dark brown hairs. Mule deer have smaller tails in which only the tip is covered with black hairs. Black-tailed deer are generally smaller than mule deer."

In browsing through some old photos I came across this one that I took on the Princeton University campus. It is out side the art museum and was created by Magdalena Abakanowicz.
Marta Magdalena Abakanowicz-Kosmowska (20 June 1930 – 20 April 2017) was a Polish sculptor and fiber artist of Tartar descent. She was known for her use of textiles as a sculptural medium and her outdoor installations. She is widely regarded as one of Poland's most internationally acclaimed artists. She was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznań, Poland, from 1965 to 1990 and a visiting professor at University of California, Los Angeles in 1984.[Wikipedia]

Hey everyone, I found a little trick to return photo pages to the look and functionality that ended with the new photo page rollout this week. Many folks have changed their language preference to something other than English in order to get the old design back. I found a different way that I hope will work even after the change is rolled out to non-English language versions of Flickr. Since this involves reconfiguring your browser, it's not for everyone. For those of you comfortable downloading and working with browser extensions and plug-ins, this is fairly simple. Curious? You can read about it here: www.elmofoto.com/Hacks/FlickrHackr
Happy Friday to all!

Two partners in crime, these black-tailed deer fawns are just beginning to sample Mother Nature's green buffet. The deer in my neighborhood must be pretty well nourished because twin fawns are not that unusual.
Giraffes travel in herds of 4 to 30 individuals. Females are called cows and males are called bulls. Cows and calves stay together, but all the other animals freely move between herds. When young bulls are 3 to 4 years of age, they leave the herd they were born into. Young bulls challenge each other in controlled fights. This behavior is called "necking."
Giraffes are browsers feeding day and night on tree leaves, flowers and sometimes grass. They tend to avoid feeding during the hottest hours of the day. They reach high into trees, removing vegetation with their 18 inch-long (46 cm-long) tongue and lips.
Although adults can defend themselves from predators with kicks from their large hooves, young giraffes fall prey to lions and sometimes hyenas. All giraffes are more vulnerable to attacks when they are in the crouching position they adopt when they are drinking water.

Black rhinos are browsers that get most of their sustenance from eating trees and bushes. They use their lips to pluck leaves and fruit from the branches.
Except for females and their offspring, black rhinos are solitary. Females reproduce only every two and a half to five years. Their single calf does not live on its own until it is about three years old.
Black rhinos feed at night and during the gloaming hours of dawn and dusk. Under the hot African sun, they take cover by lying in the shade. Rhinos are also wallowers. They often find a suitable water hole and roll in its mud, coating their skin with a natural bug repellent and sun block. Rhinos have sharp hearing and a keen sense of smell.
Black rhinos boast two horns, the foremost more prominent than the other. Rhino horns grow as much as three inches (eight centimeters) a year, and have been known to grow up to five feet (one and a half meters) long. Females use their horns to protect their young, while males use them to battle attackers.
The black rhino once roamed most of sub-Saharan Africa, but today is on the verge of extinction due to poaching fueled by commercial demand.
The black rhinoceros is classified as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List and is listed on Appendix I of CITES.
For conservancies, national and private reserves that hold any rhino, the key to ensuring the survival of their populations is the provision of adequate security.
So there was this cute girl browsing through stuff at the map store that we stopped at as we walked through North Beach during the Mixr. She had a cute hat (but still not as cute as yours emma ;) ) and I had to take her picture. I wanted it to be a candid because people are so much more comfortable when they are to themselves. However, I still don't have the courage to stick the lens on someone I don't know. So I asked her if I could take a picture, and she obliged. Thanks cute hat girl. :)

So was browsing concept art for star wars characters (as I like to do), and came across this early concept which... well, its very Vader-Esq.
Which helmet should I use as a basis (going only on the top 'cone' section of vader's helmet. For both A and C, the entire face section will be sanded flat, whereas B will have the 'roof' part and sides cut accordingly.
For the actual face design, I plan on using sheet plastic (as I always do), to create the long thin pieces and perhaps the nose section. The rest will just be painted, which will work seeing as its light-ish grey on black.
The reason I ask is as I only have one of each helmet and would have to order another of the two vader pieces to use.
Dont bother faving, I just want one of the letters and any other ideas below please!
Thanks
