The Breakers is prepared for the holidays. Cornelius Vanderbilt II purchased the grounds in 1885 for $450,000 (equivalent to $15.7 million in 2024). The previous mansion on the property was owned by tobacco baron Pierre Lorillard IV. It burned on November 25, 1892. Vanderbilt commissioned architect Richard Morris Hunt to rebuild it in splendor. Vanderbilt insisted that the building be made as fireproof as possible, resulting in a structure composed of masonry and steel trusses, with no wooden parts. He even required that the boiler be located away from the house in an underground space below the front lawn. The 70-room mansion, with a gross area of 138,300 square feet and 62,482 square feet of living area on five floors. Richard Morris Hunt designed the mansion in the Renaissance Revival style; the interior decor was by Jules Allard and Sons and Ogden Codman Jr. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1994. It is also a contributing property to the Bellevue Avenue Historic District. The property is owned and operated by the Newport Preservation Society as a museum and is open for visits all year. 44 Ochre Point Avenue, Newport, R.I. 24 December 2025
My buddies out at the Breakers in the beatuiful Upper Peninsula of Michigan near Houghton/Hancock. The beach was recently "renovated" to cover the sand that came up from the copper mines years ago. I cannot remember the exact name of the sand, but environmentalists and healthcare experts say that it is bad for the health of humans and animals alike, even though there has been no real evidence of such. In any case, the Breakers are still the place to check out wonderful sunsets, starlight, and even the occasional aurora.

Photo taken at the Santa Fe Railroad yards, 2003. This breaker box was part of a series in the secondary building of 4 huge structures. Built in the late 1800's and abandoned in the 1950's, the Rail Yard is a conglomoration of eerie stone and iron construction, towering walls of glass, and laticeworks of walkways nad stairs that lead up and up into darkness. Condemned and in some places quite dangerous to visit, the railyard is a cool trip for the expert or idiotic urban spelunker.
