This is a wonderful dish to serve for brunch, and when you have a lot of people to feed a delicious breakfast too.
You simply assemble the casserole the night before and bake it fresh in the morning. Easy Peasy!
If you like, you can also make it the same day, as long as you let the casserole rest in the refrigerator for a few hours so the bread can fully soak up the custardy goodness.
Drizzle it with maple syrup and top with a little whipped cream. You may also serve it as a bread pudding, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Delicious!

The legendary Southern Comfort Bread Pudding from Superior's Steakhouse in Shreveport. Made from Southern Maid Donuts and topped off with a Southern Comfort-based sauce, it's unbelievable that it'll only run you around $2.00 at lunch!

A combination of classic bread pudding with moist 3 leches. With a hint of cinnamon and a splash of rum & caramelized carrots on the top....very delicious, first time I have had caramelized carrots.

Bread Pudding following a recipe from "Cooking Gems from the Jewelry City" , a 1952 book of local recipes. It was excellent!
2 cups milk
1/4 cup sugar
3 slices bread, buttered, cubed
cinnamon
2 eggs beaten
1/3 cup raisins
salt
teaspoon vanilla essence
Cook in double boiler for 45 minutes.
(Alternatively, bake for about 20 minutes at 350 degrees)

Bread pudding. The first time I've made it for... for... for... well, ages. It came out well and seemed popular :-) Crispy on top, soggy underneath, and I soaked the sultanas in sweet sherry beforehand.
It followed roast tomato and red pepper soup (ie roast toms and roast peppers) finished with a dollop of plain yoghourt, and roast pheasant with fluffy roast potatoes, carrots, and buttered Sweetheart cabbage with toasted pine nuts. Urp.
Presenting my very first homemade bread pudding. It's pretty basic (made with Jimmy John's day-old and white chocolate chips), but it was really tasty.
fried egg, maple syrup, chili sauce ($14)
- a bit of a cut, pile and smash act given that everything was piled on a moist cornbread wedge (which had a great hearty crust. I'm a muffin top type of girl. This was one of those caramelized crusty edged "cakes"). The brie cheese and the sweet maple laced chili sauce actually added vs. overwhelmed the combination. Quite tasty and good.
Background:
bread pudding plus wild blueberries, maple syrup, bacon ($10)
- surprisingly light and well balanced. Not at all heavy and much preferred over standard French toast.
