Use stale bread--two or three days old. Wholegrain is best for flavour, but avoid rye and sourdough.
Breadcrumbs are easily made by hand after cutting off the top crust and 'digging' them out. They shouldn't be fine, like powder. Tear apart the bigger crumbs to yield a size of ca. 5mm.
This was a very difficult shot. The ducks come right for you when you get out of your vehicle. I broke up my bread threw on the ground and the crumbs were gone quickly. So finally I crouched down, threw a few pieces of crumbs and pressed the shutter button. Still blurry!
Bye bye beautiful bug!
This delightful bug was constantly on the move - except when he was feasting on a breadcrumb - so it was quite a challenge to capture his cuteness on camera…
Length approx. 1.5 cm / 0.6 inches. No ID yet. Is he related to a cotton stainer bug (Pyrrhocoridae)?
Better leave a trail of breadcrumbs... The room I took this from had no window and no light, the rest of the area had no roof and full sun. It took me a long time to match the light, ISO, speed, and focus to get the exact picture I had in my head. Overall I am very happy with the final result.
Ingredients:
30g butter
1 tbl olive oil
1 clove garlic, crushed (I doubled the garlic naturally)
1/2 cup fresh breadcrumbs
1/2 cup caramelised onions
Penne (enough for two)
Handful fresh rocket
Method:
Cook pasta until al dente, drain and set aside. Add butter and oil to a medium fry pan over medium heat. Add garlic and breadcrumbs and cook until golden. Toss with caramelised onions, pasta and rocket. Serves 2.
We drove over to collect Lucas this morning, and we had a fun day with him in Quenington. He's very interested in mechanical things (as well as digital stuff), and was keen to try out the old weighing scales I have in my 'cabinet of old stuff' in the spare bedroom. We loaded it up with various things from said cabinet, to see the needle move around the dial. Then we had to put the old mincer into action, and I thought it would be fun to complare with my old (but not quite SO old) mincer. We observed and described the differences between the resulting breadcrumbs - which I then ate, with some melted grated cheese. Then Lucas used the slicer attachment to slice some cheese to make his sandwich for lunch.
In the afternoon we played Marble Rush and Duplo, and also cycled to Fairford to go to the playground there, before returning to Quenington for a very brief visit to the teeny tiny fairground which visits us each year (only about 5 stalls/rides). Spaghetti Bolognese for tea, and home to bed for Lucas.
Introduction
A family favorite – Chicken Kievs are simple to make and really tasty. This paleo version uses ground almonds instead of the traditional breadcrumbs for a delicious grain and gluten-free alternative. Make sure to source good quality free-range chicken breast.
Ingredients:
•2 free range chicken breasts
•50g butter
•1 clove of garlic, crushed
•1 egg
•ground almonds (about 50g)
•Smoked paprika, 1/2 to 1 tsp.
•Ground cumin, 1/2 to 1 tsp.
•Handful of fresh parsley, finely chopped
•Sea salt
•Freshly ground black pepper
•Cooking fat of your choice
•Cocktail sticks to hold the Kiev’s together
Method:
1.Preheat oven to 180C/350F/Gas Mark 4.
2.Place the chicken breast on a board and using a meat hammer bash them out a little.
3.Make a slit in the chicken breasts where you will put the garlic butter.
4.Mix the crushed garlic clove with the butter and a little of the fresh parsley in a bowl until well combined.
5.Place a spoonful of the garlic butter into the slit you have made in each chicken breast. Stick two cocktail sticks through each breast to hold the slit closed.
6.On a plate mix the ground almonds with some smoked paprika, ground cumin, a little fresh parsley and salt and pepper.
7.Crack the egg into a bowl and lightly beat.
8.Dip the chicken breast first into the egg and then roll in the ground almond mixture to get a good coating on both sides. Place the Kievs onto a plate.
9.Heat the cooking fat in a frying pan and then fry the Kievs for 3 to 4 minutes per side to get a nice crispy coating.
10.Place the Kievs into an ovenproof dish and bake for 15 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through. Remove the cocktail sticks before serving.
While Rigatoni has subdued the Breadcrumb Container, she winds up shaking herself out of a predicament all her own.
