A croquette is a small breadcrumbed fried food roll containing, usually as main ingredients, mashed potatoes and/or ground meat (veal, beef, chicken, or turkey), shellfish, fish, cheese, vegetables and mixed with béchamel or brown sauce, and soaked white bread, egg, onion, spices and herbs, wine, milk, beer or any of the combination thereof, sometimes with a filling, e.g. sauteed onions, mushrooms, or boiled eggs The croquette is usually shaped into a cylinder, disk, or oval shape, and then deep-fried. The croquette (from the French croquer, "to crunch") gained worldwide popularity, both as a delicacy and as a fast food.

Research in 2008 showed that 350 million kroketten are eaten in the Netherlands every year. An estimated 75% of all Dutch people eat them, resulting in 29 kroketten per person per year on average.

Very cold today, so cauliflower cheese piping hot with a breadcrumb top seemed the ideal comfort food.

Breadcrumb Trail screening Q&A, Cornerhouse, Manchester, Friday March 28th 2014

My lunch at Morgans Seafoods, Scarborough, Queensland.

It was very enjoyable in the late autumn midday sunshine.

Slightly bedraggled but looking fat, possibly because he had just gorged on seedy breadcrumbs put out for the birds.......

They ordered two cappuccinos and sat there, discussing breadcrumbs.

Yet another traditional-style sweet dish: Quark "noodles" sprinkled with roasted breadcrumbs and sugar and served with homemade plum compote.

Quark is a type of firm cream cheese that can be eaten raw or cooked and is used in both sweet and savoury dishes. To make dumplings (noodle-shaped or the round kind), the quark is mixed with flour, egg, some salt and a little bit of butter, then simmered in salted water for about ten minutes. Eat while still hot or warm.

Quark noodles are usually eaten with fruit compote because they're rather bland on their own. And since I still had a whole lot of plums waiting to be used up, I decided to cook up some traditional-style plum compote. It's fairly easy to make: the plums are halved, de-stoned and dumped into a pot with only a small amount of water and some sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon and cloves. Bring to a boil, then reduce the temperature to low-medium, put a lid on the pot and let simmer until the plums are so soft that they start falling apart, and the remaining liquid has turned red and slightly syrupy. Serve cold - straight out of the fridge is fine.

Here we found a hollowed out lobster shell that was filled with chopped lobster meat, mushrooms, pumpkin and seasoned with lobster tomalley, etc. and finished with crisp breadcrumb coating. Almost like Coquille St. Jacques, but much fresher tasting (due to the lack of dairy).

Ok, I confess: I don't listen to U2 and I took the easy way on this one.

I just found this command amusing. It made me want to roll in panko.

Last Sunday, Don and I visited the Getty Museum, and after foregoing the tram and hiking up the hill (pedometer said a bit more than 4,000 steps and 21 stair flights), were famished!

So we made a beeline to this "Restaurant at the Getty". Imaginative name, yes? I had this lovely $24 (yeah, it's pricey here) MARKET PASTA (seasonal vegetables, harissa-tomato pesto, poached egg, & garlic breadcrumbs).
