Last week I spent an afternoon walking in the woods along the Brazos River and came across three of these creatures.

This is from an early April trip to Brazos Bend State Park. I've been to the Park many times, but had never before walked the "Live Oak Trail". It was quite a treat, and this spot really grabbed by attention. SE Texas. 4/2020
An alligator at Brazos Bend State Park, Needville Texas. I took this beauty while hiking around the Texas State Park.
I took this from the car on the way into the park yesterday morning.

This was November 2014. Hopefully I will have an opportunity to photograph these trees again this season. The Park was flooded and closed the past two autumns. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas. 11/2014
I caught this crew on my way into the park one morning last week. When I first sat down with my camera, it was just the two fawns. Mama soon came out of the woods to keep an eye on me. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas. 6/2020

An alligator peering through the beautiful spring flowers along a swamp hiking trail. Tip toe through the flowers and end up an alligator meal!!
We see a lot of green herons in late August and September. I assume our summer resident birds are joined by a few migrants during this period. I photographed this bird in late August 2018, He was animated and patient, so I have a lot of pics of him. Here he is scratching his eye which, given that sharp claw, must require a soft touch. I posted a tight crop in comment 1. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas. 8/2018
When water levels get low, we see stilts at Brazos Bend. I took this last weekend before Hurricane Hannah's outer bands gave the area some rain. Hopefully the stilts are still in the area. Cropped more than I like. 7/2020

This was last week at the Brazos Bend State Park Owl nest. The adult bird is perched in a tree adjacent to the nest tree. The little ones would soon be dining on what looks like some kind of duck? Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas - 2/2023.
I thought this photo of 4 white Ibis looking for food, looked like they were bowing down to the Great Egret. Caught this photo at #BrazosBendStatePark
I watched his heron in the morning light for about 15 minutes. I have a few wide shots, and a few close ones. This is the largest bird species in the park, and an amazing hunter. If they can grab it, they eat it. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas. - 7/2022.
A Snowy Egret walking through spring flowers. This is 1 of the many reasons why spring is my favorite time of the year to do photography.
Yesterday, a park volunteer directed us to a location where he had heard the distinctive "chirp" of gator hatchlings. We went to the location, found mama gator, and heard little gators chirping. After a few minutes, the little ones started to come out of the foliage and show themselves. We counted at least 20. These two decided to climb on top of mom. For those familiar with Brazos Bend, this is on the right side of the 40 Acre trail between the trail head, and the tower (as you walk towards the tower). Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas. 9/2019.
Great-horned Owl was yawning Sunday March 10, the morning after daylight savings time. Awesome Owls. Bubo virginianus
A small beautiful Moth?? Whatever it is, it is a beauty. Photographed at Brazos Bend State Park, Texas
This is from December 2020 in the spillway at Brazos Bend. The spillway fills with water after a big rain, and the birds come to feed. It’s a great place to arrive early, and wait for whatever may transpire. I previously posted a few wider images from this particular morning. This snowy came quite close. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas - 12/2020.
Green Herons are mostly a summer bird here, but a few do winter with us. I came across this one on Christmas Day. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas - 12/2020
My beloved Brazos Bend State Park is currently closed because of Brazos River flooding, and won't open until sometime in June. This seems to have become an annual, or multi-annual event.
Last summer, this very cooperative night heron gave me some pretty close shots. This is a rather common summer bird for us, but I never get tired of seeing them. That big beak is well suited for catching, and eating crawfish.
I look forward to getting back into the Park.

"Hope and the future for me are not in lawns and cultivated fields, not in towns and citiies, but in the impervious and quaking swamps."
- Henry David Thoreau "Walking"
Green Herons are pretty common down here all summer, but they seem to become more abundant late August/early September. Most leave for the winter. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas. 8/2017
A few months earlier this stilt would have been wading. Lack of rain turned the pond into mud flats. I’m hopeful recent rains improved the situation.

A Tricolored Heron suddenly extends its long neck to strike at potential prey. This action took place in Brazos Bend State Park, Texas, USA.
The bald cypress trees give SE Texas a little touch of fall color. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas. 11/2019
Migrating wood storks periodically roost at Brazos Bend, and yesterday I was lucky to catch a few. The bad news was there was very little light. The good news was, had the sun been out, this shot would have been directly into it. A little kid passing by while I was shooting called them "spooky Halloween birds". I can see it.
