It's always nice to catch a green heron. I think this is the first one I've had a decent opportunity with this summer. I've seen several, but they have either been in the shadows, or obstructed. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas. 7/2018
Another view of this cooperative Bittern. He watched me from behind the distant reeds, then suddenly marched right over to me. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas - 2/2021.

I took way too many pictures of this bird, but it's hard not to when a bird poses, preens, feeds and appears unconcerned with my presence. I took several pics of this bird on 8/26, and returned on 8/29 to find him in the same place.

Fall and winter bring cooperative raptors to Brazos Bend. Perhaps this is the same hawk I have met up with for the past few years? With little water due to the draught, and few water birds in close proximity, he/she saved the day. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas - 10/2022.
This bird was feeding in water flowing across the spillway at Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas. See my previous post for context. 1/2024
Stilts sit with their legs completely folded under their body. They also sit in the pictured position, with partially folded legs. This young stilt is in a place that was covered with water before our current drought A few nice rains will do wonders. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas - 7/2022.
During most winters I have one or two green heron sightings over the full season. This year, I'm seeing one, two, or three each visit. For some reason, we have more GH's in the park this winter. Conversely, this is the first winter in a long time that we have not seen vermillion fly catchers in the park. I caught this GH last weekend on a cloudy January afternoon. Another wide shot. We spent New Year's Morning at Brazos Bend State Park. It was mid-30's and windy, but there were quite a few birds about. This anhinga posed in a tree for quite awhile. SE Texas. 1/1/2018

Yesterday I was photographing ducks, when this anhinga swam up and posed. Over the past month, he/she has been a good subject for me, and others. I wanted to get something other than the classic anhinga portrait, so I moved in close with my longer lens and tried this shot. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas - 1/2021
At Brazos Bend we see three ibis species. The white ibis is most common, followed by the white-faced and the occasional glossy. The white-faced and glossy can look similar. The red (vs black) eyes of the white-faced ibis is one way to distinguish these two species. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas - 12/2022.
Often maligned but very beneficial, they eat thousands of ticks, fleas, etc. Just happened to run across one, it just stopped and checked me out, went on about its business. Brazos Bend State Park near Needville, Texas
I loved seeing this squirrel and its buddies running through the flowers in search for food this spring morning at #BrazosBendStatePark. I took this photo at ground angle to bring the beautiful spring flowers, green grass and the munching squirrel together, hoping to capture the feeling that I felt that morning...wild and free, but hungry!!! I was hungry also : )
The touch of red is courtesy of a few moorhens, with their bright red beaks. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas. - 9/2022.
This goes back to February, and the Brazos Bend Owl Nest. The mother owl is feeing the tiny owlet squirrel meat. The light was not my friend here, but I did the best that I could. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas - 2/2022.
A white egret at Brazos Bend State Park tossing back and swallowing a juicy fish. I love the water droplets that you can see flying through the air.
I arrived when it was still dark, and watched the rising sun gradually illuminate the fog-covered lake. The early Sunday morning start was well worth it. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas. 2/2020.
Early and late in the day, there often are deer alongside the park road. I try to enter the park with a camera on the passenger seat. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas. 5/2020

After significant rain, the spillway at Brazos Bend State Park fills with water and becomes a haven for feeding birds and gators. This is one of my first images of a January morning, taken with the earliest bits of light. SE Texas 1/2017
