American Bitterns winter in SE Texas. Some years we see several, other years not so much.
This was my first decent look this season. I thought I was done for the day, but came across this bird on my way back to the car. I can't resist a bittern. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas 11/2022.
An Eastern Bluebird flying around Brazos Bend State Park. I was very excited when I seen this beauty!!
For the longest time I kept calling Cormorants Anhinga's and finally got it straight that I the birds I was always seeing in Galveston are Cormorants. Then last weekend I finally got to see the real Anhingas at Brazos Bend State Park. They are awesome and I will never be confused again.....ummm that is about which bird is which anyway:)
Large is best
This is a rather odd composition, but I like it (not sure if anyone else will). I was waiting for this bird to walk into the open space. It had a different idea, and backed out of site into the foliage. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas. 5/2020
This is one of the parent (mother I think) stilts at Brazos Bend State Park.
She certainly brings to mind a certain ZZ Top song familiar to those around my age:)

When you think of Texas you think cowboys and cattle. But, the Lone Star state has some Texas size alligators as well at Brazos Bend State Park🐊🐊🐊
Keep a safe distance and keep the doggies on a leash to have a good time viewing these massive wild reptiles.
When visiting south Texas take care as alligators do thrive in country areas. We have a couple living in the lake by our house. Our neighbors had a massive one in their pond that had to be removed for obvious reasons.
The non-feathery parts of the white ibis turn bright red during breeding. Over time the red fades to a dull orange. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas - 3/2023.
This was last June when the park was drying out. As the water went away, the wading birds had a feeding frenzy on the newly exposed creatures. In a few weeks, the area would be dry and offer little to eat. Thankfully, we are now getting some rain. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas - 6/2022
I spent a few mornings with this Green Heron. I got down low with him, and he went about his business in a relaxed manner. However, he would put his crown up when he heard someone else passing on the trail, or when he sensed any movement in the leaves (insects, wind). This GH was quite a character, and fun to watch. I spent enough time with him to be convinced that I wasn't disturbing him. I did get poison ivy, but it was worth it. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas - 7/2021.
Bitterns often look quite stoic, but they can actually get pretty animated. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas - 4/2021.
I believe the male is on our left, and the female on our right.

Two species show somewhat similar appearance at first sighting with their white plumage, but are very different birds from two distinct families. The Snowy Egret on the right belongs to the Herons family (Ardeidae), and has a straight dagger-like bill and yellow lores (it also has yellow feet). The White Ibis on the left is in the Ibises and Spoonbills family (Threskiornithidae), has a longer curved bill and red facial skin with blue eyes, and is an adult with white plumage except for black wingtips. This juxtaposition was seen at Brazos Bend State Park, Texas, USA.
Least Bittern watching for movement from a fish, or insect, or anything else it might want to eat.

While hiking around Brazos Bend State Park, Texas, I came across this yellow bird. Can y'all tell me what it is??
We have a wood duck pair hanging out at Brazos Bend. I hope they spend the winter. With some rain, maybe they will.

Just for fun, I went back and processed a file from June 2007. This was taken with the Canon 20D, my first digital camera.

Here's one more of my cooperative hawk. The bird was surveying the landscape for food. I like this pose. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas - 10/2022.
This water bird had been busy all morning feeding its babies. Spring time is my favorite time of the year to photograph animals. All the new life learning to live!!
This summer I had a few opportunities with up-close least bitterns. It was a treat!

I wish that I had given myself a little more DOF on this one (at least tried a few shots with more). I wanted isolation from the bg, but wish the beak was a little sharper. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas - 4/2021 - ƒ/7.1, 1/1000, ISO 1600
Shortly after we moved to Texas we saw a Purple Gallinule and were completely amazed by its colors. (We had no idea what it was). It's still a fun bird to come across. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas. 3/2018
I came across this raccoon at Brazos Bend State Park one morning out hiking with my q of my daughters. It had been messing around on the ground and eventually climbed up to the fork in this tree and settled down for a nap.
This Tricolored Heron struck what seemed like a comical pose, though it was simply in the midst of doing some daily maintenance activity in the form of preening. This individual used a boardwalk railing for the purpose, in Brazos Bend State Park, Texas, USA. A young bird, it still shows reddish traces of its juvenile plumage.
This was shortly after I started my walk one morning last November. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas - 11/2020.
Young Alligator, couple of years old, late afternoon. Near Needville, Texas USA, Brazos Bend State Park
It's always nice to catch a green heron. I think this is the first one I've had a decent opportunity with this summer. I've seen several, but they have either been in the shadows, or obstructed. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas. 7/2018
