Here's one the gators that I shot. Both granddaughters got lots of photos from the outing and Gene did too. FYI - The alligators at Brazos Bend are not enclosed behind fencing. They, and all the other inhabitants of the Texas State Park, roam free. When you visit it is strictly at your own risk so you know to keep your distance; however, it's fairly easy to get reasonably close to the gators. They're generally not interested in human tasting but with the drought and dry conditions it's good to adhere to "don't go near the water" if there is any.
FYI - we stayed at least 15 ft. from the gators; farther away from most of them than that. There were plenty of waterfowl on the banks - much easier target that humans.
These birds are pretty common in SE Texas, but this is the first time I have photographed one. The bird landed right next to me, and then was gone. The shooting angle is too steep, but I knew I didn't have time to move back.
From Cornell's "All About Birds": The Crested Caracara looks like a hawk with its sharp beak and talons, behaves like a vulture, and is technically a large tropical black-and-white falcon. It is instantly recognizable standing tall on long yellow-orange legs with a sharp black cap set against a white neck and yellow-orange face.

Brazos Bend State Park has re-opened after flooding caused it to be closed for about 6 weeks. The Elm Lake and 40 Acre Lake trails look great. Some areas in the lower part of the Park remain closed. With so much water, the birds are really spread out. I saw a ton of gators and several deer.
We stared at each other while I made a few shots. When I started to walk down the trail, he swam alongside of me. When I stopped, he stopped. When I started again, he started. I guess he was very curious.

There is this old song that says, "The battle is over, the victory is mine..." After watching this fight for breakfast versus life for about an hour of so. The gator had finally got the snake spun around to where it could get its head down his throat. Research shows that after this meal that the gator may not need to eat for a week or more. Wow, life so fleeting so quick, enjoy it and make sure you are right while life is here!! You never know when it is your time to go.
