I was really pleased to see these little plovers. Endemic to NZ and now endagered (thought to be about 5000 remaining). It isn't obvious from the photos, their bills bend to the right at the end. Most are off at their breeding grounds on 'braided streams' in the mountains, but a few remained on the coast. Compared to the other NZ birds, I wasn't able to get any closer (taken from a hide) but I was delighted it moved in near enough for a couple of shots.

By starting with 2 long strands folded in half, you only need to tuck in loose ends at one end. Nudging the braid to even out the thickness is the last step to making a beautiful braided loaf.
i'm slowly figuring out how to french braid. i think this technically is one. this solves the conundrum of wanting long bangs even though they're ALWAYS in your face.
