This garment is either a very large kimono or a donjya 'sleeping kimono'. It was once heavily lined with cotton for warmth. The white knotted threads that held the quilting in place still remain.
A donjya is a large quilted kimono used to sleep in. It may have been used by one person, or perhaps a couple or small family. They would have gathered inside it together for warmth.
Either way, this is a fantastic Meiji era folk textile made up of various indigo cottons. It is entirely handmade. The cotton is hand loomed and likely hand spun.
