It takes 15 seconds to slice through the secondary fence at the U.S./Mexico border with a saw. It takes a bit longer to solder it back securely.

Memorial erected1992, dedicated May 2011 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the WWII Battle of the Coral Sea which was fought 4-8 May 1942 between the Imperial Japanese Navy and Allied naval & air forces from USA & Australia. It is composed of a series of 12-metre high stainless steel rods set in a hexagonal concrete base with plaques depicting insignia of RAN, Merchant Navy, HMAS Australia, RAAF, AIF & “Lest We Forget”.

“Battle of Coral Sea . . . Allied losses in the naval battle, off north-eastern Australia are ‘relatively light’, compared with those of the Japanese. . . Latest official tally of enemy losses is 11 ships sunk and six damaged. Nine of the vessels sunk and four of those damaged are warships. . . the only reason Allied losses are not revealed now is because disclosure would give Japan valuable informatio.” [Daily Telegraph, Sydney 10 May 1942]

“The Coral Sea battle, fought from May 4-8, 1942, will be commemorated in Adelaide next week. . . Laying of wreaths on the war memorial, North terrace. . . From May 2 to 8 a day-by-day story of the Coral Sea battle, will be shown with models in a window at Myer's. Mr. Phil Buring, who took part in the battle in HMAS Hobart, will be in charge of the display.” [The Mail 28 Apr 1951]

“The Coral Sea Battle, which halted the Japanese in their drive southwards and saved Australia from invasion. . . is being celebrated throughout Australia this week. American and Australian airmen won the battle for the Allies.” [Border Watch, Mount Gambier 1 May 1951]

“Every Australian naval ship and its crew lost during the war and every US ship lost in defence of Australia were remembered in the wreaths massed on the National War Memorial, North terrace, yesterday, at a ceremony opening the week's remembrance of the Battle of the Coral Sea. More than 100 war windows, ex-servicemen, leading citizens and US representatives were present to recall the sacrifice and victory of May 4 to May 8, 1942.” [Advertiser 6 May 1951]

The border checkpoint Alpha near Helmstedt was the largest and most important border crossing on the Inner German border during the division of Germany. Due to its geographical location, the shortest land route between West Germany and West Berlin, most transit traffic to and from West Berlin was handled by this crossing. Most travel routes from West Germany to East Germany and Poland also used this crossing. The border crossing existed from 1945 to 1990

Specially selected passengers have taken a trip on the Borders to Edinburgh railway a day ahead of the opening of the new Scottish Borders rail line to the general public.

The owners of a Golden Ticket traveled on three trains leaving Tweedbank, Galashiels and Stow, each carrying 160 passengers.

Others making the trip were nominated by the public or won competitions.

The 30 miles of new track between Tweedbank in the Borders and Edinburgh opens to the public on Sunday.

On September 9, 2010, Congresswoman Giffords met with National Guard troops who have volunteered to patrol the Arizona-Mexico border.

Giffords, who long has called for the deployment of Guard troops to Arizona, visited with soldiers training in Tucson and then saw them fulfill their mission on the border in Nogales. She was the first elected official from Arizona to meet with the newly deployed troops.

During her visit, she met with the assistant adjutant general-air of the Arizona National Guard and several hundred Guardsmen who are being trained at a Tucson facility for their border security mission, which is named Operation Copper Cactus.

We welcome change and openness; for we believe that freedom and security go together, that the advance of human liberty can only strengthen the cause of world peace. There is one sign the Americans can make that would be unmistakable, that would advance dramatically the cause of freedom and peace. President Obama, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the United States and North America, if you seek liberalization, come here to this gate. Mr. Obama, open this gate. Mr. Obama, tear down this wall!
