The plans were posted on BoardGameGeek so I figured I'd try them out. I really should have done the stain before assembly. Live and learn. www.boardgamegeek.com/filepage/139613/potion-explosion-wo...

HUGE thanks to all the volunteers who plan and run the BoardGameGeek convention each year! Jeff and I had a fantastic time.

This photoset contains images from the Battling Tops Tops Tournament. And yes, I'm talking about the children's game first published by Idea back in 1968. At BGG, attendees take the contest to a whole new level. :-)

Every year in mid-November, Jeff and I attend a board gaming convention called BGG in Dallas, Texas. For us, it's a chance to catch up with gaming friends, make new friends and play some games. I find that each year, it becomes more about the people and less about the games. I do a lot of livetweeting from my gaming acct: twitter.com/BGGgirl.

Feel free to scoop any for personal use or to promote the convention; a photo credit would be appreciated when possible (either tag me, link to @BGGgirl on Twitter, or "Photo: Debbie Ridpath Ohi" etc.). Because I took a LOT of photos and also have to dive into work catch-up, I am unable to fulfill individual requests (e.g. "Could you please send me that photo you took of me on Saturday"); it's why I'm uploading high res versions to Flickr.

Please don't tag people unless you're sure they won't mind being tagged.

Meanwhile, I'm already counting down the days until next year's BGG convention!! You can find out more about BGG events at boardgamegeek.com/bggcon and the website/community at boardgamegeek.com/

two player game of power grid in progress

Conquest of Paradise is a game of empire building in the "Polynesian Triangle" of the central Pacific Ocean for two, three, or four players. Players explore the unknown ocean around them, hoping to discover the most lucrative island groups, and colonize them. They build canoes and train warriors to create a force to defend their empire, while forging lines of communication with their developing discoveries. Resources are scarce; using them wisely is a key to victory. Investing in exploration widens your empire. Building warriors strengthens your empire. Investing resources into cultural innovations can yield unexpected dividends, like tattooing, hula dancing, surfing, or even the giant moai statues of Easter Island fame.

Conquest of Paradise is a well-tested, fast-playing design geared to appeal to players who enjoy games like New World, Civilization, and Conquistador. You can learn the game in 10-15 minutes and finish a complete game in 60-90 minutes.

Conquest of Paradise is a game of exploration and empire building, but also (as you'd expect from a GMT game) CONFLICT. Choosing when to build those expensive warriors, and when and where to fight, given limited resources, is key to your success.

I'll be gradually adding more photos to this album and will also be creating an album of high-res photos on Flickr (URL to be posted here). Photos from the 2013 BoardGameGeek Convention at the Dallas-Fort Worth Hyatt Regency. I had a wonderful time!! Kudos to BoardGameGeek admin and volunteers for helping to keep this event running so smoothly.

Feel free to use or repost for helping to promote the convention or in personal blog posts, etc., plus please include a photo credit if at all possible...Either "Debbie Ridpath Ohi" or a link to my @BGGgirl Twitter feed or the original photo in this Flickr set (or the set itself) or my Facebook page, etc.

Please don't ask me to send you any particular photo; I lack the time to search for and send individual photos, sorry.

Thanks so much to my friend C. Scott Kippen ("skippen" on BoardGameGeek) for the gift of MIRACLE AND OTHER CHRISTMAS STORIES, signed by Connie Willis. It arrived today. Scott said it was supposed to be for Christmas, but he was slow. I love late Christmas surprises! :-D

I'm a fan of Connie's work, especially DOOMSDAY BOOK, even more so after having briefly met her in person -- she's so friendly and down-to-earth. My music group, Urban Tapestry, was co-guest with Connie at Balticon in 2008 (along with John Jude Palencar) and Ad Astra in 2001 (other guests: David G. Hartwell, Rick Green & Robert J. Sawyer).

My music group covers a gorgeous song written by Brenda Sutton that's based on DOOMSDAY BOOK (see lyrics/chords for "In A Gown Too Blue" at www.bsutton.com/brenda/music/lyrics/gown.htm)

Thank you, Scott!

Jeff and I had a ton of fun at the BoardGameGeek convention in Texas a couple of weeks ago. Huge thanks to the #BGGcon staff, sponsors and volunteers for making this event possible! I believe approx 3200 attended (possibly more?).

Feel free to scoop/share/repost/tag if know the people in the photo won't mind; a photo credit would be appreciated, thanks!

Feel free to share/repost for personal use, if you know the people in the photo won't mind. Also feel free to tag people in these photos but again, only if you know the people won't mind.

If you like board/tabletop games or want to know more, I highly recommend you checking out the amazing community over at BoardGameGeek.com/ They're doing their annual fundraising campaign right now (I just donated) and LOOK, one of the photos I took is at the top of the page: boardgamegeek.com/support I'm grateful to the BGG community for so many reasons. One of them: they supported me and my art years before any of my children's books got published -- I so appreciate their early encouragement of my comics. :-)
