Block 25 - Calico Puzzle
No time to procrastinate over fabrics this week so just grabbed the first 3 co-ordinating ones that came to hand. I am in the middle of renovating the bathroom and later in the week will be meeting up with magpie and kookaburra to spend 2 days at the Sydney Quilt and Craft show drooling over the quilts and of course doing some retail therapy.
The famous statue of William Penn atop City Hall.
There is a very interesting story attached to this one, called the 'curse of Billy Penn'. Wiki says,
The Curse of Billy Penn was an alleged curse used to explain the failure of major professional sports teams based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to win championships since the March 1987 construction of the One Liberty Place skyscraper, which exceeded the height of William Penn's statue atop Philadelphia City Hall.
The curse apparently ended on October 29, 2008, when the Philadelphia Phillies won the 2008 World Series, a year and four months after a statuette of the William Penn figure atop City Hall was affixed to the final beam during the June 2007 topping-off of the Comcast Center, currently the tallest building in the city.
Mr. Penn surely doesn't like being blocked!
One of the downed branches from the atmospheric river the night before. I was actually surprised not to see more damage on my walk, but I'm sure the windstorm took out several trees across the city.
Block 16 as shown here, was located in Auschwitz-1 and housed close to 1,000 Jews, Gypsies, Romas, Gays and others who were considered 'Political Prisoners' of the Nazi regime. It is estimated that in total, over 1.3 Million people died at the hands of the Nazis here at Auschwitz which is located in Southern Poland.
First block, 2nd version. I took the block apart because I did not like the fabric I had used on the + and switched to the turquoise scissor fabric. Much better These are going to be very addicting!
I loved making the x and + block for Megan's month in the Sew Beautiful Bee so I decided to make five more for the ladies in my hive of the 4x5 bee, 3rd quarter. LOVE how they turned out!

These brass plates are being put into the pavements outside the old houses from which Jews were deported to extermination camps during the rule of the Nazis. The idea is that you almost trip over them, then read the names of the people who used to live there, thus also bowing your head. I like this idea of a memorial, because it brings the whole holocaust down to a local and personal level. This action is not limited to Darmstadt, but is spread across all of Germany. I thought black and white best fitting. Other data on the blocks includes date of birth, where the person was deported to, and date of death (if known). Please view in full size.

Hamlin Block at 304-306 S. Main in Hutchinson, Kansas. Built in 1888 and named for Martimer Hamlin, a Connecticut-born carriage maker. He likely chose this location due to its closeness to two nearby rail lines as well as an area traditionally dominated by industrial activities.

Taken with Canon AE-1 analog camera. Kodak Elitechrome 400 film (five and a half years expired). Cross processed as color negative.
No post-editing. Negative scanned with Epson Perfection V500 Photo, cropped and downsized for the web.
This time I added some lace at the bottom of the mushroom, and I think that really does something for it!
I tried to sharpen this picture some, to make the details more visible, since my cell phone takes such poopie pictures. Tomorrow my shiny new 14 megapixel camera comes in, and I'll be able to take much better photos then!
