FINAL MASS TOOK PLACE IN THIS CHURCH ON SUNDAY 7th OCTOBER 2018 AT 11am. THE PIPE ORGAN WILL BE TRANSFERRED TO CAVAN CATHEDRAL.
The Church of the Annunciation in Finglas West is one of Ireland’s largest suburban churches, with the building itself covering approximately one acre. The turning of the first sod to build this church took place in July 1964 and was finally opened on the 8th October 1967 with the blessing of the Archbishop of Dublin, Charles McQuaid. The Parish of Finglas West was formally established in 1962 and the new building replaced an older tin-roofed church (Church of the Incarnation) that was located just in front of the main entrance.
The church is dedicated to the Annunciation of Our Lady which marks the occasion when the Archangel Gabriel informed the Blessed Virgin Mary that she will conceive a child through the Holy Spirit and that his name shall be Jesus. The Feast Day of the Annunciation is held on March 25th.
Additional information about the Church of the Annunciation:
• David Keane & Partners of Dublin were the architects who designed the new church. David Keane 22/9/1929 – 28/9/2007. The firm is still trading as KMD Architecture (Keane, Murphy & Duff partners). David Deane retired from KMD in 1987 but remained on as a consultant to the firm.
• Stephen Walsh designed and completed the stained glass windows, including the massive Annunciation window above the main entrance. He also created the mosaic Stations of the Cross and the large image of Christ Ascending into Heaven seen behind the alter.
• Richard Joseph King (1907-1974) designed the bronze and enamelled tabernacle. Richard is more famously known as a stained glass artist who worked with Harry Clark and went on to become director of the Harry Clarke Studios after Harry’s death in 1931. He was also well-known as an ecclesiastical painter with his own particular style, of which many of these have been illustrated in the Capuchin Annual from 1940 through to its final issue in 1977. Stephen also designed and executed the Connemara marble plaque behind the baptismal font.

I was anxious to get some photos of the Church of the Annunciation since it’s been confirmed the church will be demolished and replaced. The reasons given have been structural problems, increasing costs of maintenance and heating, as well as falling congregation numbers. The current church can hold up to 3,500 mass-goers, while its replacement will hold up to around 350. The proposed new church has been designed by Coda Architects of Dublin. Some of the land the church is on will be used to build social housing.
At this stage, it is not clear when the church will be demolished and that could be up to two years away. The structural problems are considered too expensive to fix and relate mainly to the roof, which also leaks in places. The roof is partially constructed of cast concrete with reinforcing steel bar and it seems that the thickness of concrete used was insufficient, so rain water ingresses into it and has been corroding away the reinforcing steel bar. It is also unclear what will happen to the stained glass and other fittings that adorns the building, especially the huge and impressive window above the main entrance. There is also a fine large organ whose fate is as yet, undecided. The church is also adorned inside with many statues and the bronze and enamelled tabernacle designed by artist Richard Joseph King.
But one thing is for sure, the Finglas skyline will never be the same without The Church of the Annunciation and its distinctive high spire.

The Blessing of the second rescue boat that has been donated to NSRI with funds raised by the surfski community, Spirit of Surfski 2, took place at Fish Hoek Lifesavers Club at 18h00 on Friday 12 December. The 6,5 metre Sea Rescue boat will be based at Simon’s Town.
Surfski race organiser Billy Harker got the surfski community to join hands and stand behind the NSRI by raising funds for Sea Rescue after paddler Casper Kruger was rescued in False Bay in 2007. Picture NSRI.

The grey building was the Sheldon House when Fayette was an active town, and the limestone and brick building in the foreground was the machine shop.
The Garden Peninsula's residents include a number of commercial fishermen, and Escanaba's Bishop comes by early in the summer to bless the fishing fleet. That's the event we're watching develop in this photograph.
This picture works quite well in black and white, by the way; along with the horse-drawn carriages, it has an apparent authenticity which seems quite impressive. Perhaps I'll post that version, too....

His Holiness, Benedict XVI, granted an Apostolic Blessing to Rev. Nicardo P Blanquisco and all the members of The Congregacion de Sta.Clara de Montefalco, on the occasion of the700th mortal death anniversary of Sta. Clara de Montefalco (1308-2008). The blessing was issued November 13, 2008 and signed by Archbishop Felix del Blanco Prieto of the Vatican on behalf of the Pope.
According to the Catholic Encyclopaedia, “an apostolic blessing is a sacramental with which is granted a plenary indulgence.” It should be noted that “the possession of this is not the sole or immediate cause for gaining the indulgences attached thereto by the blessing of the Holy Father or his delegate. But the possession enables the recipient (Congregacion de Sta. Clara de Montefalco) to gain the various indulgences in the performance of certain good works or acts of piety.”
On this Jubilee Year (2008-2009), may the members of the Congregacion de Sta. Clara de Montefalco actively work for the spiritual benefits of this apostolic blessing by living the Augustinian Spirit more vigorously through thought, word and deed.

Dawei Zhatsang - Shamba Langkor monastery - sunning the Buddha
The Sunning of the Buddha Festival is the day when Tibetan people worship Buddha. It usually falls on the 15th day of the first lunar month. Tibetan people will gather together in the temples to celebrate this festival.
Tibetan people in festive costumes gather in the local temples on the morning of the Sunning of Buddha Festival for the Sunning Buddha ceremony.
Accompanying Buddhist music played by lamas, Tibetan men carry the Buddhist tapestry from the temple to a clean and well-lit hillside. The tapestry is then unfolded along the hillside by the lamas, starting the Sunning of Buddha Festival.
Pious Buddhists kowtow and chant sutras beneath the giant Buddha spreading out before them, praying to the Buddha for blessings.
The Sunning of Buddha ceremony lasts for several hours, after which the lamas will fold the Buddha tapestry in awe. They will walk around the temple three times with the folded tapestry on their shoulders and then put it back where it is kept.

Sogwo in southeastern Qinghai is a Mongolian Autonomous County, although it is located in the heart of the Amdo region of Tibet. The population is made up predominantly of Mongol yak and sheep herders, though they speak the Amdo dialect of Tibetan. In fact, little of the culture in this area is Mongolian. In addition to the language, the customs, dress and religion are all the same as the native Tibetans who live in this region.
