It's been a while since I visited the Chicago Botanic Garden, so I had a good ramble there on Sunday. I looked for bald eagles (there were none), and checked out areas that had been closed over the past couple of years. As I was about to go past the Hilltop Garden, I realized the Bleeding Heart should be in bloom, and there is a white variety there. I did find some, but not in the numbers as previously. I guess there'd been a reorganization of the garden at some point.
A strange sight to behold in the woods, a bleeding mushroom (Hydnellum peckii) oozing bright red... 'blood'.
Actually, the red liquid produced by young bleeding mushrooms (strangely) contains a pigment known to have anticoagulant properties similar to heparin. Mature blood mushroom's caps are dry and do not produce this red liquid.
The Luzon bleeding-heart (Gallicolumba luzonica) is one of a number of species of ground dove in the genus Gallicolumba that are called "bleeding-hearts". The Luzon Bleeding-heart is the species in which the "blood" feature is most pronounced, with the reddish hue extending down the belly, furthering the illusion of blood having run down the bird's breast.
This is a tiny little (5 inch) one of the woven wall hangings I used to make. For several years I designed and sold them, ranging in sizes clear up to 36 inches. These simple design little ones were finished exactly the same, both front and back, so that they could be hung in a window.
And this is Leona Lewis, Bleeding Love...

Here's some trivia for you: growing up in Arizona, Valentine's Day was always (and I guess it still is) an official state holiday... because, it also just happened to be Arizona State Admission Day.
Happy Valentine's Day / weekend, everyone!

Because of fire danger of high transmitting wires, PG and E is cutting many old pine trees in Tilden along the Seaview Trail. This recently cut tree almost seemed to be bleeding, its pitch dripping down and staining the rings of the tree's core. It's sad but necessary, I suppose. Beautiful at the same time.
This is a (seemingly) poor paint job in the brand new parking garage at my medical/dental school. The paint makes it look like the wall is bleeding! It also looks like someone tried to clean it off the wall with little success. The way that the paint bled looked really impressive to me and I just had to try and grab a pic of it before they were successful in cleaning it up. Who knows, they might just end up leaving it haha.
Enjoy :)

It is almost time for Smugmug to close down Flickr for maintenance so that they can perform the mammoth task of transferring every single thing on Flickr to a new server. Hard to imagine, and I'll keep my fingers crossed that the transfer all goes smoothly. There will probably be a few glitches to iron out afterwards, but these will no doubt eventually be fixed. An interesting, and important, read, if you didn't see it:

The day before yesterday, 19 May 2019, I was out for the day with my daughter, to celebrate Mother's Day and yet another birthday for me. I always look forward to a day like this - my favourite way to spend a day! I hope she enjoyed it as much as I did. Unfortunately, the weather was cloudy and windy, especially when we went to Frank Lake after spending time at the Saskatoon Farm. We both still managed to get a few photos and, today, the colourful ones are most welcome, as we have yet another gloomy day. I think it must have rained again last night, as I can see there are puddles out there.
Our day started with a delicious breakfast at the Farm, after which we walked around the grounds. I always enjoy seeing the farm cats and dogs wandering about, inside and outside. Visitors are not allowed to bring dogs, which means that the farm animals can roam in peace.
The gardens have not yet been planted with flowers - just as well, as I noticed that there was a risk of frost on two recent nights. There are flowers blooming in the greenhouses, though.
Our next destination was Frank Lake, where we hoped to see at least a few birds. It was very quiet, with little to photograph - not the best time of the day. Two Eared Grebes were swimming near the blind, but what a challenge they were! Non stop swimming and constantly changing direction, fast. I think I ended up with a couple of photos that might be sharp enough to post - the rest have been deleted. A Yellow-headed Blackbird, perched on a cattail, was swaying in and out of the viewfinder.
It felt really good to get out, as I have been spending so much time going through all the images from our trip to South Texas. It did feel a little strange to be driving, as I have barely been out the last few weeks.
