This photo was found from another lifetime ago - taken with a disposable kodak film camera - most likely purchased at the local pharmacy. It looked as though it really wanted some TLC, to I decided to breath a little life into a rather mediocre photograph from - well, as I said - a lifetime ago!
Huli Ceremonial Headdress Birds-of-Paradise are woven into the cultural fabric of New Guinea. Their gorgeous feathers are desired for ceremonial costumes, mostly for headdresses. This modern example is from the Huli tribe of the Tari area of the Southern Highlands Province. The base is compacted dyed human hair, which represents strength and vitality. The blue breast shied of a Superb Bird-of-Paradise, the long black feathers of astrapia, and nearly the entire body of a Raggiana Bird-of-Paradise with its fluffy red plumes are the central decorative elements. Shells, feathers from other birds including parrots, and synthetic neon feathers further adorn the headdress.The headdress is worn by a Huli Wigman for performance in a sing-sing, a traditional cultural gathering. Dancing beside similarly costumed men, his movements cause the feathers to sway and bounce. Many sing-sing dances are based on the courtship behavior of birds-of-paradise.

The plant grows to 2 m (6.6 ft) tall, with large, strong leaves 25–70 cm (9.8–28 in) long and 10–30 cm (3.9–12 in) broad, produced on petioles up to 1 m (39 in) long. The leaves are evergreen and arranged in two ranks, making a fan-shaped crown. The flowers stand above the foliage at the tips of long stalks. The hard, beak-like sheath from which the flower emerges is termed the spathe. This is placed perpendicular to the stem, which gives it the appearance of a bird's head and beak; it makes a durable perch for holding the sunbirds which pollinate the flowers.

Got this beautiful Bird of Paradise from my florist. He was trying to lure me buying all six bunches he had, I argued and had only one.
Solitary is filling !
Used standard CFL lighting at vertical position with spot metering. Minor color balance/saturation tweaks and graphics in Photoshop.
Full View Recommended.

It is a common ornamental plant in Southern California, and has been chosen as the Official Flower of the City of Los Angeles, where they are all but unkillable.
