'Birds of Paradise'

John Gould 1804-1881

John Gould combined the rare talents of both an artist and an ornithologist becoming, at the age of 22, the first Curator Preserver of the newly formed Zoological Society of London. Having already earned a considerable reputation as a painter, Gould was one of the first naturalists to mount an expedition to Australasia in 1838, then a very young colony. He surveyed and painted the bird fauna where he described, for the first time, over 200 new species.

Set on an old chart of the East Indies the illustrations are of eight exotically beautiful Birds of Paradise from Gould's collection 'Birds of New Guinea' painted between 1875-88.

This puzzle from 1996 was just the antidote to the awful rainy weather we've been enduring lately, with its bright colours and beautiful depictions of exotic birds.

I hope this fits the criteria. Birds of Paradise are never solitary blooms, so they always go together.

I was playing around with mirror images and couldn't see beyond two little heads bobbing up and down talking. Then I noticed an evil looking insect/arachniddy thing hovering in the background. Perhaps he's waiting to eat the loser ! Now it's posted I see the join is not clean, but I think you'll be able to make out the interloper.

A large pale wheatear. Gray-brown above with warm orangish tones on white underparts and a pale white eyebrow. Tail is predominantly black with white edges and it contrasts sharply with its snow-white rump. Somewhat similar in coloration to a toned-down female Northern Wheatear, but visibly larger, shorter-tailed, and longer-billed (all of which are accentuated by the typically tall, erect posture). Inhabits flat, open areas, often at middle to high elevations. Remarkable song has a tumbling quality that includes long ringing whistles, chattering, and imitations of other sounds in the surrounding environment. Calls include shorter whistles and hard “chak’s,” like rocks being struck together.(e-bird)

Siberian Stonechat Male

Chunky little bird of open landscapes; often sits on exposed perches. Breeding male has a black head, broad white half-collar, and rusty-red chest. Non-breeding male is patchier, with a paler head and chest. Female is predominantly streaky brown above, with a weaker, less contrasting face and chest pattern. European Stonechat is very similar, and can pose identification problems where the species overlap; look for Siberian’s larger white wing patch, duller orange on the chest, and whiter rump. (e-bird)

Painted for the International Public Art Festival (IPAF) in Cape Town, South Africa, this piece depicts a couple walking through a Western Cape scene of giant protea flowers and fynbos - plants that are endemic to the region. The couple becomes one with their environment, transforming into the very flora that surrounds them. Their race and background are indiscernible; they are simply South African.
