Just a snap from the family holiday in France. As a professional photographer it's tempting to lug around all that gear on holiday but I find it important to step away from photography from time to time and just focus on my family. I only took 400 images in two weeks and mostly just with my small digicam (and a waterproof housing).

A while ago I did a model shoot with the fantastic Kim Van Noten. We didn't have a real plan except for having fun while creating pictures. Ake was my kind assistant for this shoot and she also shot some video.

LIGHTING INFO:
The main light is natural light. I added a snooted SB-24 behind the model to create a warm summer feel to the image and separate the model fom the background.
I made a video to show how we did this:

I was seriously considering not doing weddings anymore next year, in fact the decision was made. But some amazing weddings this year made me recall that decision. Bart and Marleen are two fantastic people who trusted my vision and skills completely and are amongst some other couples that pushed me to go on.
Next year I'm going to do a limited amount of weddings and I'm going to do it my way. I'll focus on quality instead of quantity. I won't guarantee to capture every little moment any more but I will guarantee that I'll capture the mood of the day in less but better pictures.

As part of my workshop 'the Decisive Photographer', I did a one hour live shoot. I wanted to play it fair and didn't check the location or anything in advance. We just took a walk and stopped when we saw some good light, backgrounds, ... for portraits. Thanks to some of the people in the class for modelling.
Here's a setup shot. For this picture we used a 580EX flash to camera right (right next to the wall) to get structure in the background and give some dramatic lighting on our subject at the same time.

During a one-on-one workshop I teached, I remembered an old plan to do a model shoot with a simple compact camera instead of a DSLR. I could only snap a couple of pics of Ine posing for Michael but it sure did remember me to actually plan a model shoot with just a compact cam.

I don't do a lot of typical studio photography and usually white seamless backgrounds are considered as the enemy. So I hesitated to take on this job for fashion designer Griet Verhoeven (www.enolah.be). Having the opportunity to work with my favorite model Erika, made me do it. And I'm glad I did it. It was a valuable lesson about being open to other kinds of photography. Much to my own surprise I enjoyed this shoot a lot. The soft light and white seamless makes you focus on posing much more, because that's the only tool left to tell your story. The extremely professional attitude and fun collaboration with the model, the designer, her assistant/stylist and the photographer was also very enjoyable.

I strongly (convince myself to) believe that professional photographers should take some time to play every now and then. We played around all the time when we where amateurs and that's what made us good enough to go pro anyway. So to become a better pro, I try to allow some time to play in my tight schedule.
A few months ago I got into a conversation between some like minded photographers and we decided to do some kind of fun shoot together. I actually didn't have the time but I went anyway. And I'm glad I did, because I came back with more energy and motivation.

Suzanne is an Egyptian beauty who lives in Antwerp. She needed a small portfolio to audition for a part in a videoclip from her favorite Egyptian artist.
Suzanne's great looks, fantastic smile, natural posing skills and fun character made it easy for me. It's hard to believe that she never posed before and was very nervous the first 15 minutes.

Pro model Sylviane read on my Facebook that I was scouting a location near where she lives. By the time I finished scouting we arranged to have a short improvised fun shoot.
I only had a camera + 24-70 + speedlight in my bag. In the trunk of my car, I also found a Sunbounce mini. But not having all my gear with me, couldn't stop us from having a fun 30 minute shoot.
At home, I only spent another 30 minutes postprocessing the shoot in Lightroom
The limited gear forced me to be creative and I actually rediscovered a cool lighting technique.

I love shooting families who can let themselves go, people who like to play, don't mind to get dirty and have fun. This family was so good at enoying themselves that it felt like I just had to press the shutter.

Went geocaching in the neighbourhood with the two eldest kids on sunday. I'm so happy I moved to this place, eautiful and calm fields to go for a walk or a bike ride.
Didn't try hard to make good shots, just some quick snaps with the point-and-shoot while enjoying the kids having fun.

Lighting Info:
I first tried to make this shot with just window light (from camera left). There was light enough but I couldn't get the lighting even across the frame. If the left side of the pictures was correctly lit, the barman got to dark. Ik I lit the barman right, the left side was to light.
So I placed a Canon Speedlight 580EX on a stand with a translucent umbrella just out of the frame (camera left) to throw some extra light on the barman. The speedlight was set manually to 1/8 of the power and triggered with the Canon ST-E2 transmitter.

Pregnancy is one of those unique times in life and it's always worth having some visual memories of that fantastic time. That's why Sarah and Bart decided to have a photoshoot before the baby was born.
It's pretty difficult to avoid making the typical classis studio shots, but we tried. Sarah and Bart proposed to shoot in the fantastic small village Mullem. We just walked around, had fun and made pictures. Sarah and Bart were great and it was fun to me too.
This is probably my favorite pic. Sarah looks so 'girlish'.

See Bert's blog post here for much better photos. Sometimes ambient light just doesn't work :-) (And not even aggressive high pass sharpening can save this shot from being slightly out of focus due to yours truly not checking that he used the right AF setting... 51 point 3D? WTF was I thinking?)
A pity that the model couldn't stay on for the shooting on sunday, but I guess it would mean WAY too much running around between the 25 photographers to make any good photos. :-)

I'm seriously considering buying a Hasselblad 500 c/m camera. Since my old film SLR died, I've thinking about getting another film camera. I've shot and developed a bit of film when I was 18 but I've only become a photographer once digital came around. More and more I feel like I missed a bit of history in photography and I've been tempted a couple of times to buy one of the iconic camera's.
A friend who's taking his photography in another direction sells his Hassie, so I shot two testrolls to see if it's something for me.
This one is shot on Kodak Porta 400VC (I'm not a big fan of saturated colors so I tweaked them a bit and added some contrast in Lightroom)

I've been telling people for years that there's a market for compact camera's with a fast prime lens and a big sensor. So I've been following the evolutions of the micro 4/3 system. Eventually I decided to buy the Panasonic GF1 with the 20mm f/1.7 pancake lens. So far these first test shots exceed my (already high) expectations. I'm going to have a lot of fun with this camera.

Like almost every year for the past 10 years or so, my parents and our little family went for a ski holiday in Austria.
When I recentely borrowed an Ixus in Valencia because my gear was stolen, I realised I had to get a good compact camera myself, so I bought a Canon Ixus. It's far from as powerful as my DSLR's but because it fits in my pocket I can take it with me all the time. Great for some memories I wouldn't have captured otherwise.

My son Kobe sometimes doesn't get the attention I'd like to give him. So once in while we take some time to do something fun with jus the guys
Kobe had been talking about fishing, so I asked one of my best friends Sven (aka Ponette) to take us fishing.
We spent the afternoon at a creek but didn't catch anything. But we took enough food for a nice bbq on the beach anyway. Sleeping in a tent on the beach was quite an adventure for Kobe. The three of us really enjoyed it.
