Pregnancy is one of those unique times in life and it's always worth having some visual memories of that fantastic time. That's why Sarah and Bart decided to have a photoshoot before the baby was born.

It's pretty difficult to avoid making the typical classis studio shots, but we tried. Sarah and Bart proposed to shoot in the fantastic small village Mullem. We just walked around, had fun and made pictures. Sarah and Bart were great and it was fun to me too.

I'm teaming up with the famous wedding photographer Mike Larson (www.mikelarson.com) for 3 workshops organized by Calumet Photo and California Sunbounce in Belgium and Antwerp. To be honest Mike is doing most of the work and I just demo how I use Sunbounce reflectors in combination with off-camera flash to create a natural look. Long days but lots of fun.

In Amsterdam the weather was reasonable (cold and windy but no rain). We had a pretty nice sky so I choose to take our amazing bride Julia to the parking lot for a little shoot.

Walking around at a congress for professional photographers with a 25 Euro plastic toy camera, provokes some strange looks sometimes. I only had time to shoot one roll of Kodak Portra 160NC film (medium format). Looking at the very particular look the Holga gives these pictures, I should have shot a lot more frames. It’s not that these are great pictures, but I still like them.

We did this series of pictures in an old factory near Aalst. I'm not used to shooting strobist-style so this can hopefully get you over your fear to just try it & be amazed by the results you can get using only 1 off-camera flash.

I bounced just one Vivitar 285HV on a Sunbounce Pro reflector for some soft yet directional light and still keep detail in the sky. We used the zebra to warm up the main light for a nice contrast with the blue sky.

Putting Julia on a couple of pallets and shooting up allowed me to get rid of the pretty ugly buildings in the background.

I recently did a guerilla shoot together with my friend and fellow photographer Jean. The goal was to test the California Sunbounce Micro Mini reflector with flash attachement. We decided to go on a completely unplanned mission: no location, no make-up, no models, not much gear and no concept. Just shoot what we came up with at the moment.

LIGHTING INFO

I underexposed the background by a stop. The Sunbounce with a Vivitar 285HV flash attached (camera left), lights the subject. I think the flash was at 1/4 power.

Today In Rotterdam, we were in a large studio. Great spot for studio photography but not much available light to find. A couple of small tungsten lights were pretty much everything I could find. I used them to create an out-of-focus background. The model was lit with a single speedlight at 1/16 power bounced of a Sunbounce Pro (zebra fabric). On the shadow side we put a silver Mini reflector as fill light.

LIGHTING INFO:

The use of dry ice gave a pretty cool atmosphere ... at least to the naked eye. In my pictures it just seemed that the bottom of my lens needed some cleaning. To make the smoke more visible, I put my speedlite 580EX on the ground in slave mode (on manual) and triggered it by the ST-E2 infrared transmitter.

Lately I've been incredibly busy. I'm really grateful that business is going so well, but sometimes I really need a break from it. That break doesn't have to be two weeks on an exotic beach (but if you offer me I'll gladly accept it). Yesterday my two eldest kids went geocaching (www.geocaching.com) with my friend David and his kids.

These couple of hours outdoors with happy kids and a good friend gave me such an energy boost.

I doesn't happen very often but sometimes it feels like you know someone pretty well without ever meeting each other. Veerle is Belgian but lives with her husband and their adorable daughter in California. I've been reading her blog about their American adventures for ages and Veerle was one of the first readers of my blog.

On their recent visit to our country I finally had the pleasure to meet Veerle, Sven and Nina for a photo session and a nice chat. I really hope I can visit them in the US one day.

TECHNICAL INFO

When shooting babies, it's often best to keep the lighting simple. We used a single Vivitar 285HV in a lastolite softbox to camera left.

Lighting Info:

I do a lot of weddings and I'm allways looking for ways to make more interesting pictures in challenging situations. It's pretty hard to make dancefloor pics that are clear and yet don't kill the atmosphere. I often stay a bit longer then required at a wedding to try out some new ideas. For this picture I wanted to use the flexibility and speed of E-TTL flash for the foreground in combination with a manual flash effect light.

To make this work I had an ST-E2 transmitter on my camera to controle the 580EX strobe in my left hand. The camera was set to manual to get a reasonable amount of available light in the picture. The 580EX was zoomed in to 50mm to allow me to focus on the subject in the left of the frame without spilling too much light on the background.

A sigma strobe was put in the background on a stand with a blue gel on it. If I remember it correctly this strobe was at 1/32 power. The sigma was triggered by the build in optical slave. I probably spoiled some pictures from the point-and-shoots from guests by using the optical slave, but they should leave taking pictures to the pro, right? ;-)

This technique needs some refinement and next time I will trigger the Sigma with a pocketwizard, but the results are promising. It may take another 2 or 3 weddings to get it right, but experimenting is what keeps the job interesting.

PHOTO BY BERT STEPHANI - ALL RIGHTS RESERVED

LIGHTING INFO:

This picture is shot with a Peleng 8mm fisheye. So you can actually see the flash in the picture. Usually I use my remote flashes on full manual with pocketwizards but in cases like this, I like to work with Canon's E-TTL system. The flash is a 580EX and it's triggered with an ST-E2 transmitter on the camera.

For this quick and dirty kind of work, the system is nice but if I have the time I'll rather have the complete controle of working on full manual.

I like red-haired people. The first boy I ever got a crush on, a long time ago, had wonderful blondish-red hair, and he was only the first of a long series of beautiful, beautiful, beautiful people I've fallen in love with, stared at in fascination, even photographed. Not to mention envied with all my heart.

So, when I finally decided to change my hair colour from the usual muddy brown to something a little more interesting, red was the obvious choice. Not just any red, though: the reddest red I could find.
