Brick Lane Beigel Bake

From a store called Costco's; these are smaller black 'n' white cookies than the original kind, and the icing has a stronger, lemony flavor than orignal black 'n' white cookies. The box of cookies was under $6. The cookies is the size of a Chips Ahoy cookie, but thicker. In the background is a box of Scotties tissues.

I think he owned it. His name was Sammy David Jr. apparently.

That Brick Lane institution, Beigel Bake, is open 24-7 - including Christmas Day.

That's breakfast sorted then!

a typical friday night on brick lane and Nick can't resist the lure of the bagel

One of the things that my UK-dwelling brother finds himself craving is a New York Style bagel.

Well, as is the case for most of the world outside of New York, that's actually a bit of a challenge in London.

It's not that there's no such thing as a bagel. Indeed, one of the iconic places in London is "Beigel Bake" on Brick Lane, which, nestled amongst the Indian and Bangladeshi restaurants, has been churning out beigels for decades, like the difference in spelling, their "beigel" is a subtly different creature. Good, but not quite the right thing if you are craving a more NY-like bagel.

That's where Carmelli Bagel Bakery comes in. Located in Golders Green (which is a rather interesting collection of both Jewish and Middle Eastern places), they serve up bagels that are much closer in tradition to NY bagels.

I'm not so great at portion control sometimes and really made too much salad. Steamed and flaked salmon fillets tossed with chunks of avocado in a touch of salad cream (I was feeling a little lazy that day:), lemon juice, salt and pepper. Served on a bed of mix salad leaves. I also had some beigels sitting in the freezer, from my last visit to the Brick Lane Bakery, which I heated up in the oven.
