The oldest and best of the Beigel shops in London, the Brick Lane Beigel is a social mecca as well as a thriving bakery that produces over 7000 bagels a night. Trendy kids and Jewish old-timers stand around chatting through the night as the work continues and if you buy from the shop the prices are still incredible.

After a rather sleepless night in Shoreditch, the only thing to get me out of bed was bagels, and lots of them. I have to admit, two of the bags are probably mine. I normally sit down on the pavement right outside the bagel shop in Brick lane, being the shameless tourist and all, but it was a little cold, so off to the park for a more restrained version of al fresco breakfast.

A sign for an all-night beigel shop in London. I always thought it was spelled "bagels" but a quick look on the web shows that both spellings are used.

At the other end of Brick Lane is a bakery famous for it's 24/7 hours and their salted beef on beigel sandwiches, slathered with mustard.

I'm not so great at portion control sometimes and really made too much salad. Steamed and flaked salmon fillets tossed with chunks of avocado in a touch of salad cream (I was feeling a little lazy that day:), lemon juice, salt and pepper. Served on a bed of mix salad leaves. I also had some beigels sitting in the freezer, from my last visit to the Brick Lane Bakery, which I heated up in the oven.

There are two historic beigel shops on Brick Lane, 4 doors apart; Beigel Shop and Beigel Bake. Beigel Bake regularly has long queues out the door on the weekend of tourists who've seen it on Instagram. This is the other one, which is only half as busy. It was closed temporarily at the time of this photo

From a store called Costco's; these are smaller black 'n' white cookies than the original kind, and the icing has a stronger, lemony flavor than orignal black 'n' white cookies. The box of cookies was under $6. The cookies is the size of a Chips Ahoy cookie, but thicker. In the background is a box of Scotties tissues.
