Can't help having a spell of nostalgia for summer during these dark gray winter days!

With 2,002 species, Begonia is one of the largest genera of flowering plants

Tuberous begonias are popular for their beautiful flowers that come in a variety of colors and forms. Red, orange, yellow, white, salmon and pink blooms may be single or double and may be plain, ruffled or toothed. Their petals may have margins, crests or blotches of contrasting color.

Tuberous begonias bloom throughout the summer, thriving in shady spots where few other plants with long bloom periods and showy flowers can grow. They are often used as container plants on patios and porches, in hanging baskets, and as bedding plants.

Tuberhybrida begonias are bushy tuberous perennials with glossy leaves and usually double flowers in small clusters in summer; most are dormant in winter.

Fortune scarlet is a bushy, tuberous perennial forming a compact mound of mid- to dark green foliage to 30cm tall. Clusters of vibrant red, double flowers are borne from summer into autumn.

She certainly lives up to the 'Scarlet' in her name, and, by the way, this is her natural colour - I haven't intensified it at all … the colour is as it was shot!

Begonia Minor ( Minor Begonia )

Begonias are tender perennials, grown for their colorful flowers and foliage. Most begonias can be grown outdoors in pots, in the ground, or in hanging baskets in filtered light and moist, but well drained soil. Where not hardy, grow as annuals or indoors as houseplants. Most begonias can be propagated from leaf, stem or rhizome cuttings in addition to being sown from seed. This bushy begonia has attractive foliage with large, bare leaves. The many flowers are white, and bloom in summer. Stemming is upright and zig-zag between the nodes. This plant enjoys filtered light but can take some sun in winter. Soil should ideally be moist. Begonias grow very well in peat-based compost also.

Important Info : Likes humidity. Does not like cold weather. Pinching tips and pruning outer stems in the growing season gives a bushier plant, good for hanging. Sudden temperature change causes leaves to drop.

I love this image as the begonia petals look like frills with the bee disappearing into the layers.

I must have done something wrong with front door display of Begonias this year. I was promised a cascade of blooms on the packet. This was the outcome - one solitary bloom finally appearing in October.

I'm heading to the airport to go to Albuquerque -- hope to have a few minutes each day to catch up with all of you, but who knows. Have a Happy Valentine's Day and a great week!

Anyone know the species name?

Digitally painted from an original photo. Many steps were involved, using several programs; the goal was to arrive at a loose watercolor look.

The newish begonia... my pal, Diane, gave me this fabulous begonia a couple of months ago. It's the child of one of hers. It languished on the far side of my pergola for a while and didn't do squat, but I finally caught on that it was getting too much sun and moved it to this side, where it gets more filtered rays, and it has flourished! I guess as soon as the frost hits, it'll be goodbye begonia - till next year - but for now, it's such a joy to behold from my kitchen windows and whenever I venture out the back door.

This beautiful arrangement was in the conservatory at the Anne Selby Botanical Gardens in Sarasota, FL.

Another plant that I am unsure about, but I think it is a type of small begonia.

It rained last night and by the time I thought about taking a few photos this solitary drop was left on the Begonia flower.

Happy day
