I haven't posted anything to this group for a while. I have just started my 365 project and i try and post to the ODC2 group everyday..so time has been limited. I happened to shoot this yesterday and saw that portrait was the topic for June 12 . 8)

SFIFF 54- SAN FRANCISCO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 54 (April 21 to May 5)

The fantastic INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL kicked into full gear with the premiere of BEGINNERS staring EWAN MCGREGOR as Oliver, the sweet but 'awkward at relationships' gentle hunk and CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER as Hal his dad who comes out at 75 years-old & finds love ! Softly directed/written by MIKE MILLS (Thumbsucker) who based part of the story on his own life experiences. A wonderful MELANIE LAURENT plays MCGREGOR's love interest.

Though, with all the wonderful sutle acting, it is the cute Jack Russell Terrier Arthur (played by COSMO) who wins everyone's heart.

If there was an OSCAR for Best Animal Performance, this understated pup would win it paws down! It seemed that EVERYONE wanted to know about this great pup.

Of course, it is the writer/director that deserves the credit for including such heart-warming moments pivotal scenes involving Arthur. (COSMO is a Los Angeles rescue dog!) MIKE MILLS described how the dog bonded with MCGREGOR during the first half of the film, and when the second half of filming came along with MELANIE LAURENT as MCGREGOR love interest , COSMO was taken aback & felt a tad jealous!

It seems that the cast was taken with COSMO for the director adopted a JACK RUSELL TERRIER from the LOS ANGELES DOG RESCUE PROJECT!

The movie goers also LOVED COSMO's performance, for when his name appeared at the end of the film titles, there was loud applause!

MIKE MILLS described that the basis of the film was his family's experience. His father took off his 'gay bash badge' and his mother took off her 'jewish bash badge', so they could marry and start anew.

He stated, there were many memories that appeared, though fractured and not complete. He felt that one blocks their heart to stay alive and avoid rejection. The loss of his dad was like a void that invades ones life. With his heartfelt admissions, it was quite clear that gentle emotion in the film came directly from the writer's heart.

The director wanted to make sure that the audience knew that even though the film is very autobiographical, he did NOT write this film with EWAN MCGREGOR in the lead. "I'm not that self-grandoising to think I'm anything like EWAN!" The audiance roared with laughter.

MIKE MILLS did give special thanks to EWAN MCGREGOR who attached his desire to do this film early on, and thus, EWAN's name helped secure financing and the green light.

MIKE MILLS recounted that his mom was like the charater in the film, where once at the MOMA she saw MARCEL DUCHAMPS famous 'ready-made' DADA sculpture of the bicycle wheel attached to the stool. His mother walked up to it, and gave the wheel a spin, much to the horror of the museum guards. One is not allowed to touch the art, much less give it a spin!

CHRISTOPHER PLUMMBER was a joy to work with for he was definately from the 'old school' with his manners and quips. "I love that you (director) let me steep myself in this.", said CHRISTOPHER about the freedom to adapt into his character.

EWAN MCGREGOR recounted several of his bonding experiences. Once, he went with CHRISTOPHER to BARNEYS with $300 to buy a scarf. CHRISTOPHER quickly picked out a scarf but was entralled with skinng black jeans. He just HAD to have a pair, and ended up buying THREE with EWAN's credit card!

CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER also was given another assignment to bond with EWAN MCGREGOR. Somehow, the director came up that they should make a bed together. After they accomplished their task, CHRISTOPHER ,lifts his eyebrow, turns to MIKE MILLS, and states, "You know not every director does this."

The favorite quip from the filming came from the director. The cast went to their favorite bar at the hotel when JOAN COLLINS came up to them and greeted CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER with , "Don't tell me we are all going to be naked in the pool again!"

This heartwarming & wonderful film is directed by MIKE MILLS. It actually gets my highest rating ever for an American film (*****). I actually like this sensitive film so much, THAT I SAW IT TWICE!

SAN FRANCISCO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL - SFIFF 54

The festival has over 191 films from all over the world including many that are world premiered !

ADDA will be there taking photos of the crowd and the fun! This year's festival opens Thursday, April 21st with 'Beginners,' the latest creation from 'Thumbsucker' writer/director Mike Mills. A deeply personal and universal contemplation of chances and choices in life and love, the film spotlights beautiful portrayals by Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer, and Mélanie Laurent as McGregor's character Oliver grapples with the recent passing of his father Hal (Plumber) who had come out of the closet at age 75 to live a full, energized and wonderfully tumultuous gay life.

This was my first quilting project. It was a learning experience, and they are not perfect, but my wife is thrilled with them.
