I've changed her quite a bit from her original doll. First of all, I took off her cardigan. I personally love it, but I don't think it suits her personality. Then I took her hair out of its style. I couldn't stand the victory rolls, so after a lot of washing and experimenting, I put it in a high ponytail. and fluffed it up. Then I replaced her belt with an old charm bracelet. As much as I loved her original belt, it didn't sit right. Then I spent at least 20 minutes this morning posing her for this picture!

I made muffins from Alton Brown's "I'm Just here for More Food".

There was the basic old fashioned recipe and the chocolate muffin #7 recipe.

I made half recipe of each, so 6 chocolate and 6 non-chocolate.

Unfortunately I had no yoghurt so I used homemade buttermilk in the old-fashioned. Also, I put in a half cup of smashed walnuts. I should've put a bit more sugar and some spices (cinnamon, nutmeg) but now I know. They came out nicely.

The chocolate ones were good. I let them bake a bit longer than the old-fashioned ones which wasn't necessarily a good idea. But you didn't really notice they were so moist.

Also, both recipes had me preheat the oven to 350F but the chocolate recipe said raise to 400F after I put them in...well...since they were all in one tray they all got similar treatment.

I really liked them.

But, I wouldn't mind them as mini-muffins whatever he says!

Helping to build a successful community is part of Wayne State's urban mission. Lending helpful hands to uplift those in need is a critical cornerstone.

From April 1-24, the Wayne State Athletics Department W Week Community Service Initiative, in partnership with Wayne Cares, and Covenant House Michigan, hosted a drive to collect small toiletry items to make basic needs bags for those in need in our community and for Covenant House Michigan's efforts to help young people in transition.

My oldest friend Pulapre Balakrishnan lives in Kozhikode & till recently taught at IIM Kozhikode. He has a property in Chathamangalam which has a 80 year old house that was in pretty bad shape. He happened to find the right architect, the right artisans, and went about restorinh it & bringing back the house to its former glory. The wood work lovingly scrubbed & polished, the old wooden hinges( on top of the heavy jackfruit wood doors) in perfect working condition, the floors redone with the familiar red oxide, the outside walls white washed, the bottom half of the outside walls coated with Japan Black to prevent termites.

I was blown away by the detail. A labour of love, and a perfect place for him to contemplate & complete his books, write, or just chill.

These are the basic colors of Kerala architecture. The only missing element is the dark wood, which I shall upload soon.

After 90 minutes of furious snapping, we were done in the Abbey.

Thoughts turned to more serious things, like a pie and a pint.

Or two.

We exit the Abbey and I saw that St Margaret's was open. It had been closed when we came last time.

So, we go over and find we were the only visitors, while an elderly lady was freshening up the flower displays in preparation for a funeral on the following Monday.

It may come as a surprise to find a parish church beside a major church like Westminster Abbey, but the fact it was an Abbey is the clue.

The Abbey was for the monastery, and so a parish church was built for the increasing population of Westminster.

The church is clean as a whistle, the walls covered with fine monuments that I want to record all of, so I get busy snapping.

-------------------------------------------

It may seem surprising to find another large church standing so close to the might and magnificence of Westminster Abbey. Why was an additional church needed in such a position?

To answer that question we have to recall that Westminster Abbey was originally a Benedictine Abbey. In 1065 Edward the Confessor gave orders for the consecration of the abbey church of the Benedictine monastery. That great church was to be the centre of life for the monks of Westminster. Following the Rule of St Benedict, they would assemble at fixed times throughout each day to worship God by singing what is known as 'the Divine Office'. That was their duty - 'office' comes from the Latin word for 'duty'. This was their main task in life, so they called it Opus Dei - 'God's work'. Nothing was allowed to disturb them in carrying out this basic duty.

However, the monks of the newly-founded monastery of St Peter in Westminster were disturbed by the people of Westminster who came to hear Mass. So the monks set about building a smaller church next to the Abbey where the local people could receive all the sacraments and ministrations of the Church, thus leaving the monks in the Abbey undisturbed. The church was dedicated to St Margaret of Antioch about whom little is known, though her cult was extremely popular in the middle ages.

It seems that St Margaret's was built in the 12th century, although we do not have a precise date. From then until the dissolution of the monastery by Henry VIII in 1540, ministry to the ever-growing population of Westminster was undertaken by the monks of the Abbey. This arrangement was the basis for the close relationship between St Margaret's and Westminster Abbey which has existed ever since.

The first church was Romanesque in style and survived until the reign of Edward III (1327-1377). Its nave was then replaced with one in the Perpendicular style, the chancel still being in good repair at that time. Towards the end of the 15th century, however, the whole church had fallen into such a state of dilapidation that it needed almost total reconstruction. Robert Stowell started to rebuild the church in 1482. The work continued over many years and the church was consecrated on 9th April 1523. Despite restorations in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, the structure is still substantially the same.

In July 1189, the Abbot and Convent of Westminster received a grant from Pope Clement III which confirmed that St Margaret's Church was outside the jurisdiction of the Bishop of London. In 1222, the Abbey and its property was declared not only to be outside the diocese of London but also exempt from the authority of the Archbishop of Canterbury.

When Elizabeth I re-founded the Abbey as a collegiate church in 1560 she maintained its exemption from episcopal authority and made her new foundation a 'royal peculiar', subject to the authority of the Sovereign as Visitor. St Margaret's church and parish were part of this peculiar jurisdiction until 1840 when they were placed within the diocese of London. By the 1970s the resident population of St Margaret's parish had dwindled to a few hundred and in 1972 the Westminster Abbey and Saint Margaret Westminster Act redefined the church's status. Its parish was re-allocated to neighbouring parishes while the church and its churchyard were placed once more under the governance of the Dean and Chapter of Westminster, with one of the Canons of Westminster serving as Rector of St Margaret's.
