Family, friends and fellow Soldiers of the Virginia National Guard’s Sandston-based 2nd Battalion, 224th Aviation Regiment gathered for a departure ceremony Feb. 25, 2011 at the Army Aviation Support Facility in Sandston to mark the official start of the unit’s federal active duty service in Iraq. After the departure ceremony, approximately 400 Soldiers are scheduled to report to Fort Hood, Texas to conduct mobilization training for approximately one to two months before deploying overseas. Once they arrive in Iraq, they will conduct their normal missions which include troop air assault and air movement, casualty evacuation, aerial re-supply and any other requested aviation missions. The battalion, also known as “The Punishers,” is organized into three flight companies with a total of 30 Black Hawk helicopters along with a maintenance company, headquarters company and forward support company. Of the 400 Soldiers mobilizing, approximately 75 are from the Maryland National Guard’s Company C, and small detachments from Companies D and E, as well as the headquarters company of 2nd Battalion, 224th Aviation Regiment. If you haven't had a chance to get out to the seaplane base during airventure. I would highly suggest it to everyone. I've been going to Oshkosh for the past 27 years and this was the first time I went out there. I was very impressed with everything out there. It's a really nice escape from all of things going on around the airport. It is definitely a place to go if you want to relax a bit and the crowds are getting to you. But just be sure to get out there in the early morning to beat the masses.

This graph (provided by the Alaska Volcano Observatory) shows real-time seismic amplitude measurements ("RSAM") based on data from the Shishaldin Broadband A seismic station on Unimak Island in the Aleutians of Alaska, USA. The peaks at right represent increased seismicity ("volcanic tremors") at Shishaldin Volcano, a subduction zone stratovolcano on Unimak Island, in the evening of 22 July 2023. The activity culminated in an explosive ash eruption around 12 midnight, local time (= peak at far-right).
The Alaska Volcano Observatory reported the ash cloud reached about 37,000 feet high. The plume drifted northeastward over Unimak Island and the Alaska Peninsula.
Shishaldin's current activity started with minor lava eruptions in the summit crater on 12 July 2023. Twelve episodes of explosive ash eruptions have occurred since then, on 14 July, 15 July, 18 July, 22-23 July, 25-26 July, 4 August, 14-15 August, 25 August, 5 September, 15 September, 24 to 25 September, and 3 October 2023.

Explanation of "RSAM" from the Alaska Volcano Observatory:
Real-time Seismic-Amplitude Measurement (RSAM) was developed by the United States Geological Survey to summarize seismic activity during heightened volcanic activity. This technique for characterizing a volcano's changing seismicity in real time (as it is occurring) relies on the average amplitude of the signal from individual seismometers rather than on the locations and magnitudes of the earthquakes. During heightened volcanic activity, seismicity commonly reaches a level at which individual seismic events are difficult to distinguish. Analog seismic records (such as the webicorders) provide some information, but do not provide rapid quantitative analysis. Although several real-time earthquake-detection and recording systems exist, most fail to provide quantitative information during periods of intense seismicity, which is a common situation before a volcanic eruption. Yet it is precisely during such periods that the need for timely quantitative seismic information becomes most critical. To fill this need a simple and inexpensive real-time seismic-amplitude measurement system (RSAM) was developed.
The RSAM computes and stores the average amplitude of ground shaking caused by earthquakes and volcanic tremor over 10-minute intervals. Increases in tremor amplitude or the rate of occurrence and size of earthquakes cause the RSAM values to increase. Rather than focusing on individual events, RSAM sums up the signals from all events during 10-minute intervals to provide a simplified, very useful measure of the overall level of seismic activity.
The RSAM does not differentiate between volcanic activity and other sources of ground vibration such as wind, someone walking nearby, or a large regional earthquake. Thus one must be careful to not mistake wind noise or other non-volcanic signals for volcanic activity. RSAM works best during times of high activity when the volcanic signal dwarfs most noise.
We also make no instrumental corrections when we calculate RSAM, so it has only relative units. The units should not be compared from station to station. We calculate RSAM values in real-time from our seismic data, and do not archive the RSAM values, as they can always be recalculated.
