Vintage Base Ball Tournament at Greenfield Park in West Allis, Wisconsin on August 23, 2014.

A autumn visit to the remaining Auxiliary Unit Operational Base at Blaenavon, South Wales. The site is very accessible, being close to a car park and just off a public footpath to the summit of Blaenavon Mountain. It sits in an exposed location which is leading to its increasingly rapid deterioration.

I won't try to explain the history of the Auxiliary Units, only to stay that at the peak in 1941 there were estimated to be over 1,000 small units of highly trained volunteers that would inflict a guerrilla war on any invading force to the British Isles. They were highly trained, and often had regular jobs within the communities within which they served. One unit did not know the identity of neighbouring units, nor were Operational Base locations shared. The purpose of the OB was to be a place where fighters could rest and resupply. There were a number of stations designated Zero stations; the callsign allocated to the operator of the radio net. These stations would have coordinated operations. As far as I know, Blaenavon was not a Zero station.

While most OBs were underground, this one stands out as it is not. The terrain, and selection of site, led to the station being constructed at ground level and being covered with stone and earth to the level of the small rock face to the rear of the base. What is also intriguing, is that this OB appears to have a larger pre-fabricated building constructed at the front of the unit. While only building rubble remain of this structure, I am doubtful that this would also have been camouflaged in the same way as the OB itself. Nor am I able to ascertain if this is a later addition, after the requirement for Auxiliary Units waned, or if this was an ancillary building that would have covered the purpose of soldiers being in the area, and the OB was a separate, secret, part of the site.

Three Hawks and an Owl standing by ready for take-off

On a more taxonomic note: the Hawks are Nephele comma forma derasa. They are commonly called the Comma Hawk, based on a white comma shaped mark in the forwing. However the derasa form actually lacks this mark completely or just, as in these three, show a tiny white point. More a Full-stop Hawk really in this case.

The Owl (Noctuidae) is a bit more of a mystery. Any suggestions there would be much appreciated

March Air Force Base, Riverside County, CA

Listed: 12/06/1994

The March Field Historic District appears to be significant at the State level of significance in the areas of military history (National Register Criterion A) and architecture (National Register Criterion C). Under architecture, the district is significant in three respects. First, it is a distinguished example of a military base laid out according to city planning principles of the 1920s (type, period of construction), illustrating dramatically how those principles took form when applied to a large military installation. March Field exhibits this type of planning better than any other military installation in California. Second, it is an important example of the work of architect, Myron Hunt (work of a master), being the only known military base designed by him. Finally, it is an extraordinarily large assemblage of buildings built using hollow wall concrete construction methods (method of construction), illustrating the range of applications for that technology better than any other known property in California. Under military history, it is significant at the State level for its association with the development of the Air Corps (Air Force) on the West Coast, serving as the key training and bombardment facility on the West Coast during most of the period of significance. The period of significance extends from 1928 to 1943, the period during which buildings were constructed according to the master plan for the base, developed in 1928. The historic district also includes a building from 1918, a remnant from a World War I-era version of March Field. This building, while built outside the period of significance for this historic district, is individually eligible for listing in the National Register. The historic district retains a remarkably high degree of integrity to its period of significance, with 199 of the 228 buildings and structures contributing to the property.
