Two deconstructed pallets find new life as a horizontally installed desk backsplash in a kitchen. The boards are painted with a whitewash and highlighted with the bright wall color.
We put in the backsplash ourselves, left the oceanic old style tile counter tops, changed out the appliances for stainless steel.
We found this magnificent old fireplace fireback from an old farmhouse in NE Pennsylvania, and are incorporating it into the range backsplash in our rustic kitchen.

We only did a 6" backsplash on the sink wall due to window placement. The pewter border tile matches the cabinet hardware.
This was my first Texas star project. It is very difficult to cut a pointed star out of stone. Of course, I had to use a wet saw, but keeping the points from breaking off was a challenge and I finally learned the secret. Email me if you want to know.
Photo taken minutes after completing the laundry backsplash tiling. We may complete the top row at the near end if the offset around the laundry basin doesn't grow on us. Grouting, and silicon joints at corners, wall-floor intersections and around cabinets still needs completing – then our trusty twin tub finally gets its proper place for washing – after two years in the bathroom, and nearly half a year outdoors near the water tank when we were living in the caravan!
Yama is a hip sushi joint in Midtown, and we were quite happy to find that their backsplash tile is the same exact backsplash tile we have in our kitchen! (If only we had thought to put in a sushi bar...)
